Indian Premier League - 5th match

Royal Challengers Bangalore v Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings won by 92 runs

All is in readiness, Praveen Kumar to bowl to Parthiv Patel

**

Surprise, surprise, Jesse Ryder has been dropped. One was expecting Ross Taylor to be dropped. Both scored ducks in the previous game, but Ryder contributed with the ball and in the field. Any fitness concerns? Not any that one knows of at this point. Rajesh Bishnoi will make his IPL debut, replacing R Vinay Kumar.

**

The whole idea behind Twenty20, besides of course making money, is to draw a new set of audience. How far is it going? Hear from an American cheerleader, Rebecca Lee, who finds Rahul Dravid "surely cute", and is on her way to conversion. Who would have thought they would need old-fashioned cricketers to convert Mischief Gals?

**

Pitch report: Kepler Wessels: "It is not the best day in PE. Quite blustery, and wind is too strong.

"This track was used during the match between Australia and SA last week. On the dry side, slower than that previous game. Reasonable batting surface, boundaries have been brought in. The 160-mark is defendable, I wouldn't feel safe with anything less than that."

**

3.55pm: Weather update. Drizzle seems to have stopped. We might get a start on time.

Ready for toss: the whole Bangalore team has gathered around the pitch. Lalit Modi presents Rahul Dravid the orange cap, and Anil Kumble the purple cap. The team is there to cheer for them.

MS Dhoni wins the toss, and decides to bat first. Dhoni is hoping it doesn't rain, "although some is predicted for later on in the day". Dhoni looks to use the "not very good lights". Murali, Balaji and Albie Morkel, the guy who prompted the decision to bat first, are in, in place of Oram, Thushara and Ashwin.

KP says he would have batted first too. For Bangalore, the "great Jacques Kallis" is in. What a gallery guy KP is. Good ploy to woo South Africa crowds after having been booed during the last game.

**

The South Indian Ashes takes a new form tonight, if weather, flood lights and dogs permit, that is. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have long been rivals in the Ranji Trophy, with players raising their performances to levels they didn't know existed. This one, though, will be different, with a Jharkhand player and a South African-born Englishman leading the sides. This is too young to be called a rivalry even - Chennai Super Kings and Bangalore Royal Challengers have faced each other only twice. They split those matches, though, which can't be a bad sign if a rivalry were to be built. Chennai won the first won game by 13 runs, while Bangalore won by 14.

We are an hour away from the start. The weather right now looks fine in Port Elizabeth, weather.com says. A comfortable temperature of 18 degree celsius, and partly cloudy. Keep watching this space, though, for team news, toss, and such like. And till such time, prepare yourself for a chat, admittedly online only, with Jayaditya Gupta, our executive editor, and Dileep Premachandran, our associate editor. Send in your questions to chatterbox@cricinfo.com, and you will get your answers.

3.30pm: By the way the partly cloudy sky has opened up a bit, with a drizzle falling down as we speak.

One's statistical sense, and some basic research, tells that in the first four games only 31 sixes have been hit in the first four matches, as opposed to 56 at the same point of last year's tournament. Corresponding numbers for fours are 74 and 98. Have you been off by a long way in the boundary predicter contest? You have 20 minutes left to predict the exact number of 4s and 6s for the day and who knows, you could win an iPod Shuffle. The contest is a daily exercise, so don't feel disheartened if you fail today.

Have you joined the IPL fantasy league yet? It's loads of fun. There are two versions of this for the IPL (Salary cap and Pick 'em). Check it out. And if you have joined, make your changes for day fast; servers get locked in 13 minutes.

Steyn to Morkel, FOUR, shot, what can you do with a yorker? move away, open the face, and dig it out to point boundary. Where were you so long Albie?

19.4

Steyn to Morkel, 1 run, slower bouncer, Albie, beaten by the pace, tries the scoop over keeper, but it's the toe end, Uthappa leaps high, gets a hand to it, and can;t collect the rebound behind him, while diving

19.5

Steyn to Flintoff, 1 wide, Flintoff shuffles again, Steyn follows him, beats Flintoff, it's close to a wide, and is called, unfortunate on Steyn, and he lets it be known to the umpire Jerling. Dirty looks there

19.5

Steyn to Flintoff, 1 run, full and straight again, and played towards long-off

19.6

Steyn to Morkel, OUT, don't rile a fast man. This is full and fast and ferocious, Albie makes room, but his bat comes down after the ball has hit the off stump, an angry Steyn looks at the umpire, and gestures perhaps meaning to say, "That wasn't wide, was it?" or perhaps "So what, the wide didn't cost me much, the extra ball got me a wicket."

JA Morkel b Steyn 5 (5m 3b 1x4 0x6) SR: 166.66

So Chennai, after having looked good for 200 at the strategy time-out, have to contain with 179. They were 106 for 0 after 10 overs, and lost both their openers to the first two deliveries after the break. This will create more debate about the time-out. What one can offer you is this: Lawrence Booth's musings over cricket's tradition of strange reasons for stoppages of play. See you in a bit
