Indian Premier League, 6th match: Kings XI Punjab v Kolkata Knight Riders at Durban, Apr 21, 2009
Kolkata Knight Riders won by 11 runs (D/L method)
Played at Kingsmead, Durban (neutral venue)
21 April 2009 (20-over match)

The players are out, the fielders have taken their positions. Karan Goel and Ravi Bopara are the openers. Two slips in place. Ishant to bowl. All set!

The Punjab cheerleaders are into their groove now, with Chak de phattey...Punjabi dhoom Punjabi blaring in the background.

Vibhor: "To Anthony: There is a max. of 4 foreign players in a playin XI. McCullum, Gayle and Hodge choose themselves. And by omitting Henriques and including either Mortaza or Mendis, KKR would be making their tail longer."

Anthony: "For the life of me I cannot understand why Mendis and Mortaza aren't playing. How are the equivalent Indian players even in the same league."

12.15 pm: Not much of a buzz around ... It's pretty quiet all around.. the announcer is trying hard to rev up some excitement. He announces the team .. gentle claps die pretty quickly. The crowd well short of capacity at this point, rather surprising given it's a predominantly Indian city and there are quite a few star players on offer.

12.13 pm: The conditions are overcast and there's a tinge of green on the pitch, so there'll be something in it for the seamers early on. So McCullum's decision doesn't come as a surprise, and the experts think a score of 145-150 will prove competitive.

Punjab: RS Bopara, K Goel, KC Sangakkara (wk), DPMD Jayawardene, Yuvraj Singh (capt), T Kohli, IK Pathan, VS Malik, PP Chawla, VRV Singh, YA Abdulla

Kolkata: BB McCullum (capt and wk), CH Gayle, SC Ganguly, BJ Hodge, Yashpal Singh, A Chopra, MC Henriques, LR Shukla, I Sharma, M Kartik, AB Dinda

12.03 pm: Time for the toss. Pommie Mbangwa started rather mellowly, but burst out as though he had a sudden fit while introducing the two captains. Kolkata have won the toss and opted to bowl. Yashpal Singh comes in place of Agarkar, who bowled just one over to be smashed all over the place. So, no Mashrafe Mortaza yet so all his Bangla fans will have to wait. No changes to the Punjab squad. We'll get you the XI's soon.

11.46 am: It rained in Durban last night, but has an encouraging forecast for today - it's just partly cloudy in Durban as of now, so no doubts yet about the start of play. Because it's Kolkata against Punjab, some reports in the media are dubbing it a Veer-Zaara game, wow! Thought it was a bit of a bore, but you can kill the next 14 minutes before the toss, listing down the films the pair have been involved in. Or, you could just read out the names of all the players in the Kolkata squad. That should do it.

11.40 am: Have you joined the IPL fantasy league yet? It's loads of fun. There are two versions of this for the IPL (Salary cap and Pick 'em). Check it out. And if you have joined, make your changes for day; servers get locked in 50 minutes.

11.36 am: Here's your chance to win an IPOD shuffle, and you just have 24 minutes left. Predict the exact number of fours and sixes for the day in our Boundary Meter Contest. Even if you don't get it right, just chill as we'll have this contest on for every day of this tournament.

11.30 am local time: Kolkata have put themselves under a bit of pressure having played just one game, after attracting enough attention with whole multiple-captains jargon, to be mauled by eight wickets. Their start to the tournament marked a stark contrast to their performance against Bangalore in the IPL opener last year, and with their franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan openly expressing his disappointment following their abject loss, their players will have to step up to put these concerns behind them.

Punjab threw it away after the timeout, squandering an excellent start from Karan Goel to reach a way below-par score. Delhi made easy work of their target, with the match curtailed to just six overs, but with the weather allowing so little cricket to be played, Punjab have fewer reasons to be worried. We are still a while away from the start, so read the preview to the game while we wait.

There is a new innovation in IPL here. A camera. approximately 40 feet high, above the ground ... just a miscue top edge away, slides on a string across the ground. bang over the pitch. It starts moving with the bowler and ends up above the batsman. Apparently, a few cricketers, have complained that it sort of affects them. Some might say, if you have your eyes on the ball, you shouldn't be noticing it.

Sharma to Goel, no run, back of a length, getting it to leave the left hander, Goel plays that slightly away from his body, misses

Sharma to Goel, OUT, gone! Goel was getting a little desperate there, Ishant had done well to bog him down, landed on a good length and Goel tried to force that powerfully through the off side from the crease, was not the pitch, it took the outside edge and Gayle standing at first slip timed his jump perfectly to snap a sharp chance

So, not the best start for Henriques, and Ganguly comes on now. Is he the fielding captain? Took a bit of time to set the field

Ganguly to Bopara, 1 run, on middle and leg, pushed wide of midwicket for a single

McCullum standing up now

Ganguly to Pathan, OUT, the bowling change works! Meaty, length ball outside off and he slogs it well towards deep midwicket, but he doesn't time it well enough to clear the ropes as Kartik cups it standing right at the edge of the ropes, and ensures he doesn't lose his balance. Big blow that!

Shukla to Sangakkara, 1 run, gets across and pulls it away to deep midwicket for a single, time for the strategy break now

1.33 pm: Right, time to start

1.32 pm: Players are out there wandering. Ganguly takes Yuvraj's bat and practises a straight drive. Both have a laugh. Outfield is being dried. so play held up. Yuvraj, Ganguly and Sanga talk near the centre pitch. Now Ganguly breaks away and moves towards his team-mates.

Stanton: "While it might be a disappointing turnout, why has the IPL and CSA not scheduled more double headers over weekends??? Not sure what genius thought that having a double header on a Tuesday AND a working day was a good idea, especially seeing as the games start at 12:30pm. I have had a look at the remaining IPL schedule, and of the remaining 7 double headers, only one is being held over either a Saturday or Sunday or a public holiday!! Seems to be a missed opportunity to me, especially the single games being held on the 27th April and 1st May, which are public holidays leading from or into long weekends."

Well there won't be much time left before the World Twenty20 gets underway after the IPL. And the tournament started eight days behind schedule, so they had to squeeze a lot of games in.

1.26 pm: Just a passing shower, that. The players have come back on.

1.24 pm: There about 20-odd people on the ground taking off the centre cover now as the rain appears to have subsided

Kolkata have the slight edge at this point, having done well to limit Punjab to 67 for 3. They got rid of the dangerous Goel very early into the innings, and managed to claw back well after Pathan entertained the crowd with his attractive cameo. The umbrellas are out now, all across the ground. It's coming down pretty heavily now, and the covers have come back on.
