Indian Premier League, 8th match: Royal Challengers Bangalore v Deccan Chargers at Cape Town, Apr 22, 2009
Deccan Chargers won by 24 runs
Played at Newlands, Cape Town (neutral venue)
22 April 2009 - day/night match (20-over match)

16.30 Time to start. The dugouts are full. Seems a little nippy. Decent crowd in. KP jumps about on the field, maybe keeping warm. PK has the ball. Will Gilly have a ball? Good battle coming up. Four men on the off-side ring. Massive spaces on the leg side. Hmmm. Some issues with the sightscreen. Gilchrist runs down and says stuff it, lets start this shindig. Two slips in place.

16.20 local Just about ten minutes till tee-off. Biju from Saudi Arabia has a solution to end the strategic break debate. "Break the Strategic Break into three breaks. 2.5 minutes each. Hope it will not break the momentum of players and IPL management's heart." Biju, get yourself some snacks or something for the game, sit back, and chill. "You must just enjoy," as Kapil Dev would say.

Stogy from Japan: "As long as we have to have this ridiculous strategic break, let's give it some meaning. Make it an innings break, so there are four innings, but each batsman only gets one shot, and they can bat both innings provided they don't get out. Teams will then have to play really strategically."

16.00 local Ugh, Ravi Shastri is bellowing spit as he tenses his veins and yells out to the crowd. Adam Gilchrist has won the toss and wants Deccan to have a bat. Gilchrist reckons it is a good track and thinks the ball will move around a touch at the start. Deccan have the same XI.

KP is disappointed at losing the toss. He's cool and collected as usual. Just don't say "Peter Moores" anywhere in earshot. Bangalore have dropped R Vinay Kumar for Karan Sharma and Ross Taylor makes way for compatriot Jesse Ryder.

Simon Doull and Greg Blewett have inspected the pitch. They reckon the quicks will have their say but don't feel its entirely a bowler's game. Spin should again have its say here too. The skies aren't blue but there's no rain around. For now. Fingers crossed.

An email from Mike in the US: "A private company from Australia is sponsoring Gilly's foundation for handicaps. They will be giving out a bike for every six Gilly hits. Gilly selected 25 handicaps for this noble cause, he is planning to hit 25 sixes in this tournament." That's super. He's also my fantasy Trump for this game so as many sixes as possible, thanks. Please, no nasty feedback email. I'm all for noble causes.

By the way we have a Boundary Meter Contest where you get to predict the exact number of 4s and 6s for the day and perhaps win an iPod Shuffle daily.

15.52 local Not long till the toss. Haven't heard anything about the weather.

15.30 local It is just an overnight train journey - or less than an hour's flight - from Bangalore to Hyderabad but across the Indian Ocean in Cape Town, Bangalore Royal Chargers are playing Deccan Chargers.

Those of you who followed the first season will know these two sides scraped the basement. Remains to be seen how they fare against each other in utterly different conditions. To recap their head-to-head from 2008, Bangalore won both their matches last year: the first one a thriller by three runs, and the next seemingly comfortably by five wickets.

We hope the weather is better than it has been the last couple evenings. Its a shame for the fans who have to make the trip to the venue and then sit in hopes of watching some cricket, only for a match to be called off.

There's just a little under an hour for you to pick and lock in your Fantasy League teams. No Phone-A-Friend or Ask the Audience here.

While you're waiting for the game to start why don't you join the discussion on the game with Cricinfo's editors Dileep Premachandran and Jayaditya Gupta. Send in your questions at

I'm Jamie Alter, your commentator. Raghav, a mad Deccan supporter from Hyderabad, is on scoring duty.

Kumar to Gilchrist, FOUR, bad bowling this, short and wide and crunched through the covers

Kumar to Gilchrist, FOUR, a wee bit of room outside off stump and dang, those are some strong wrists! Gilchrist transfers the weight, gets over the ball, and dispatches it behind square

One slip goes out ... KP marshals the troops ... fine leg is up ... PK changes the angle

Kumar to Gilchrist, no run, slower ball, 111ks, pitched up and Gilchrist defends it back

Kumar to Gilchrist, no run, pitches on a length and again Gilchrist watchfully pushes to cover

Some friendly fire between Herschelle Gibbs and Dale Steyn. Crowd loves it. Two slips.

Steyn to Gibbs, 1 run, pitched up and immediately Steyn gets some swing, Gibbs comes tentatively onto the front foot and tries to twirl the bat out of the way to leave but it clips it and runs past gully

Steyn to Gilchrist, FOUR, man oh man! Short and wide and Gilchrist has a free swing, slapping the ball over gully and third man cannot cut that baby off .... he's hitting them well so far

Steyn to Gilchrist, no run, banged in short on the stumps, Gilchrist gets into shape to try and hook but cannot get bat on it, the ball hits his thigh and pops up, he then tries to kick it away from the stumps but he's safe anyway

Steyn to Gilchrist, FOUR, short and wide and slapped over backward point for four

KP pats Steyn on the shoulder. One slip in. Steyn switches to around the stumps.

Steyn to Gilchrist, no run, pitched up very wide, Gilchrist needn't have played at it but does and inside-edges behind the stumps

Kallis to Gibbs, 1 run, too short and pulled powerfully out to the sweeper at deep square

Kallis to Gilchrist, 1 leg bye, pitches just outside leg stump, short, Gilchrist pulls but cannot connect and the ball dribbles of his pads towards point

Kallis to Gibbs, no run, down the track he comes, swinging at it, ball beats bat by a whisker, Uthappa collects and Kallis seems to be interested .. no reaction from the umpire and rightly so

Kallis to Gibbs, 1 run, dragged in short again and this one is pulled out to the sweeper

Replays didn't show anything on that swing and a miss by Gibbs.

Kallis to Gilchrist, 1 leg bye, pitches full outside leg stump, gets some swing, Gilchrist has a big swing and misses, the ball goes rolling into the off side ... the umpire didn't think any bat so its a leg bye .. seems correct

PK continues from around the stumps after a change of ends.

Kumar to Gilchrist, no run, well bowled slower ball, 115ks, pitches it up and Gilchrist checks his shot, he wanted to turn it away but the length did it for him and he turned it uppishly to mid-on

Some bright lights have disturbed Gilchrist. He waves his arms. The lights have been turned off.

Kumar to Gilchrist, 4 leg byes, swings down the stumps, another big swing and a miss, the ball brushes his pads and Uthappa - not a regular wicketkeeper - cannot cut if off so thats four more

PK runs in, Gilchrist pulls out ... something wrong down the ground.

Kumar to Gilchrist, 1 run, low full toss outside off stump is punched to a sliding Kumble at mid-off, there's some sprightly work from the old man, good to see

Kumar to Gibbs, OUT, he's given him! PK pitches it full on middle and leg stump, Gibbs is late on the attempted flick across the line and umpire Sahiba raises his finger in a flash ... replays show the ball was hitting leg stump

Kallis to Gilchrist, 1 run, full and wide, he kneels down and hits it very hard but doesn't get the desired placement so the result is a single to extra cover

In comes Rohit Sharma ... won't face yet

Ryder to Gilchrist, 1 run, pitches just outside leg, Gilchrist shuffles and clips it fine for one

Steyn to Sharma, 2 runs, pitches on a length, he clears the leg and goes over extra cover

Steyn to Sharma, OUT, ah, a cheeky attempt to go across the sticks ends his fine innings! Rohit walks right across to well outside off stump but the ball is not as straight as he would have liked, then he closes the face early and pops up an easy catch that KP, running in from mid-on, takes near the nonstriker's stumps ... but take a bow, son, that is a fine innings to boost Deccan

A very good total for Deccan, powered by Gilchrist and Rohit. Bangalore have their task cut out. I'll be back shortly for their reply.
