Indian Premier League, 12th match: Deccan Chargers v Mumbai Indians at Durban, Apr 25, 2009
Deccan Chargers won by 12 runs
Played at Kingsmead, Durban (neutral venue)
25 April 2009 (20-over match)

12.27pm: Three minutes to go, we are all set. The 2G netweork walks out, Glichrist and Gibbs. Malinga - his hair is trimmed, his bowling is primmed - will bowl the first ball to Gilchrist.

** It's a big day in Australia and New Zealand, the ANZAC Day, mainly to honour members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. Gilchrist wore a black arm band to toss. Interesting to see if the rest of his team, none of whom is an Australian on a New Zealander (Styris has been rested), will be wearing those arm bands.

12.02pm: Ready for toss. Adam Gilchrist wins and bats. So it will be Malinga v Gibbs first. Deccan have made one change, getting Dwayne Smith in for Scott Styris.

Sachin Tendulkar is not overly disappointed. As expected Mumbai have got Dhawal Kulkarni in for Rohan Raje.

* 11.55am: We started last Saturday with IPL 2.0. A look back at the highs and lows from the first week of the IPL.

Sunil G and Jeremy C reckon the pitch is dry, really dry, and we might have more of spin being used. Keeping that in mind, we might see the captain winning the toss batting first.

** 11.40am: Given such line-ups, strong both in their batting and their bowling, it would take some foresight to predict the number of boundaries that are going to be hit. But try doing that - you have 20 minutes to go before we close the contest for this match - and win iPod Shuffle daily. It's raining Apples here.

Talking of contests, have you joined the IPL fantasy league? There are two versions of this for the IPL (Salary cap and Pick 'em). Check it out. And if you have, you don't have much time left to make your changes.

** 11.35am: Kingsmead in Durban is bright and sunny. And two of the hottest teams so far, Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers, face each other today. One of them will suffer their first loss of the season.

Dream opening cominations: Tendulkar and Jayasuriya; Gilchrist and Gibbs. The bowling combinations are not bad either: Malinga, Zaheer and Harbhajan; Edwards and RP. Fifty-five minutes to go, sit back and enjoy.

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, just short of a length, moving into Gilchrist a touch, on target, defended right out of the middle of the bat, a clear and loud no

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, short of a length, pitched middle and angled away, but not enough room for Gilchrist to push it

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, short and sharp, 134Ks, but came on quicker, Gilchrist looked for the pull for a moment, but realised he was late into the shot, and played it towards point

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, a length delivery, 138ks, coming in at a low trajectory, and Gilchrist defends with open face, he has been on target so far

Malinga to Gilchrist, SIX, Gilchrist has had his sighter, and has now hit a blinder, this was neither full nor short, on the stumps, and he short-arms it - neither a pull nor a drive - over mid-on, and where he got the timing from to take it for a six we will never know

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, slower ball now, good comeback by Malinga, just outside off, and defended into the off side

End of over 1 (6 runs) Deccan Chargers 6/0 (RR: 6.00)

Khan to Gibbs, 1 run, slower ball, 117k, pitched middle, angles across, and Gibbs opens the face

Malinga to Gibbs, no run, Malinga gets the yorker in, fast, on off, not much Gibbs can do with it

Malinga to Gibbs, 1 run, another slower one, a bit shorter this time, and Gibbs opens the face into the covers, and takes a quick single

Malinga to Gilchrist, FOUR, lovely shot, Malinga errs a little bit with this yorker, but the ball is still swinging away from Gilchrist, but Gilchrist stays back and just opens the face towards a vacant thirdman region. He knew the field really well

Malinga to Gilchrist, 1 run, fullish on the pads, and Gilchrist goes for the short, square boundary on the on side, but the flick goes along the ground, and the area is well covered

Malinga to Gibbs, 1 wide, that's unfortunate, this one was full, swung away, and just about crossed the wide marker after beating Gibbs

Malinga to Gibbs, no run, another slower ball, 119ks, on the stumps, just short of driving length, Gibbs does well to keep it along the ground

Khan to Gilchrist, 1 leg bye, slipping onto the pads, and Gilchrist misses a flick, and gets a leg-bye

Khan to Gibbs, FOUR, Gibbs has the dancing shoes for spikes, he steps down to Zaheer again, he adjusts his length and pulls it back, but Gibbs still flat-bats it down past mid-off

Khan to Gibbs, 1 run, stays in the crease this time, angling across him, and Gibbs opens the face and takes a single

Khan to Gilchrist, no run, that's cut him into two, Gilchrist has had a bit of trouble facing the away-going delivery, but this one jagged back into him, from a length, and it goes over the stumps

Khan to Gilchrist, SIX, Zaheer almost had Gilchrist here, but the edge goes for a six! Oh come on some justice for bowlers? This one moved away, Gilchrist swung almightily, got a thick edge towards thirdman, and the ball cleared Malinga

Dwayne Bravo to replace Malinga, keeper is up

Bravo to Gilchrist, 1 run, almost a catch, Gilchrist swings at a length ball from his crease, and it goes one-bounce to Dhawan at mid-off. What's more, he misses a direct hit that would have got Gilchrist

Bravo to Gibbs, no run, just short of a length, pitches middle, holds its line, and Gibbs can't do much with it

Bravo to Gibbs, no run, this one slips down the leg side, and beats Gibbs with sharp movement in

Bravo to Gibbs, 2 runs, another mis-hit falls safe, just short of a length, within stumps, Gibbs stands tall and looks to loft it straight, and just clears Dhawan at mid-on, and gets two to show for it

Bravo to Gibbs, FOUR, edged and four! another big swing, the ball nips back in, takes inside edge, and goes past the keeper

Bravo to Gibbs, 1 bye, Bravo tests Pinal Shah this time, sick of edges and mis-hits, he bowls a bouncer with the keeper up, it surprises both the batsmen and the keeper, and results in one bye

End of over 5 (8 runs) Deccan Chargers 44/0 (RR: 8.80)

Harbhajan Singh to Gibbs, 1 run, pitched up, but still flat and fast, 98ks, and helped away into the on side

Harbhajan Singh to Gilchrist, FOUR, too fast, 96ks, and Gilchrist is too smart for these deliveries, this gave him room, and Gilchrist late-cuts it, thirdman is up, okay bye

Harbhajan Singh to Gilchrist, 1 run, Harbhajan repeats the mistake, same delivery, same shot, but this time the short thirdman gets across, and saves four

Harbhajan Singh to Gibbs, FOUR, this was a doosra, remarkably slower, 84ks, gets a thick outside edge, and it runs down to the thirdman boundary

Harbhajan Singh to Gibbs, no run, tossed up again, on the stumps, and Gibbs defends it into the on side

End of over 6 (11 runs) Deccan Chargers 55/0 (RR: 9.16)

A bit of a mixed start, edges and superb shots interspersed. But the scorecard reads 55 for 0, Deccan won't be complaining.

Bravo to continue, keeper is back for Gilchrist

Bravo to Gilchrist, SIX, Phew what a shot, length ball, on the pads, Gilchrist makes a half-move to front foot, and flicks it over wide long-on. It's gone way into the stand

Bravo to Gilchrist, 1 run, slower ball, and smart batting, he opens the face and takes a single to thirdman

Gibbs on strike, but keeper stays back

Bravo to Gibbs, no run, and a bouncer will keep Gibbs in, who stepped out early and had to sway out of the line

Bravo goes round the wicket to Gilchrist

Bravo to Gilchrist, OUT, and he gets Gilchrist with the poorest delivery he has bowled so far, this would have been a wide outside off had Gilchrist not driven at it with all his might, but all he manages is a faint edge through to Pinal Shah

Harbhajan Singh to Gibbs, 1 run, full, on the pads, and tunred away to square leg

Harbhajan Singh to Smith, 1 run, a touch shorter than a leg-stump yorker, Smith stays back and balys it towards deep backward square

Strange that Dhawal Kulkarni, playing as specialist bowler, hasn't been used so far.

And there he comes, he will live long.

Kulkarni to Gibbs, SIX, Not if he bowls like that to Gibbs, a loosener on the pads, half-swept, half-flicked over short short square boundary on on side

Kulkarni to Gibbs, 1 run, steps out, frees his arms, but can't get the elevation and gets only a single to long-on

Jayasuriya to Smith, OUT, Jaya has got Smith! he slowed it up this time, Smith went for the trademark slog-sweep, and missed, and Jaya was accurate enough to hit. Nonetheless a superb cameo by Smith, who was promoted up the order

Rohit new man in

Jayasuriya to Sharma, 1 run, slow ball, 86ks, grips a bit, but Rohit stays back and plays it towards long-off for an easy single

Another bowling change. Bravo replaces Jayasuriya

Bravo to Gibbs, FOUR, slower ball, Gibbs seems to have been beaten, but gets down to a knee, and drags it from outside off to midwicket. What a drag!

Bravo to Gibbs, no run, keeper comes up, a length ball, straightens a touch, and beats an attempted loft shot

Bravo to Gibbs, 1 run, another slower ball, short of a length, Gibbs is on the front foot already, and pulls from there only for a single

Bravo to Sharma, OUT, this is superb field placement, it was a nice shot, looking to hit the length ball over extra cover, and he does that, but the sweeper cover is straighter this time, and the ball goes straight down Dhawan's throat. This field placement could have a bit to do with the knwoledge that Rohit plays that shot really well

RG Sharma c Dhawan b Bravo 3 (5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 60.00

Laxman new man, but Gibbs on strike

Bravo to Gibbs, 1 run, just outside off, Gibbs plays it towards extra cover for single

Bravo to Laxman, OUT, a golden duck for Laxman! Not his game this, to make room and hit "ugly" shots. Laxman was always backing away here, Bravo slipped in the bouncer, Laxman, not in position to play the shot (yes Laxman not in position!) and top-edges it towards deep square leg

Khan to Gibbs, 1 run, full, swinging away, a bit, and Gibbs runs as he hits it to long-off

Khan to Venugopal Rao, 1 run, full, wide outside off, and driven towards sweeper-cover

Khan to Gibbs, 1 run, OUT, oh what an error, Mumbai are right back, Gibb s had stepped out to york himself, and play it towards long-off. This wasn't hit powerfully, so he thought there could be a two here, and he turned around instinctively, but Bravo was incredibly quick to get to the ball, and Venu sent Gibbs back. All too late. In fact Venu had come down half-way, and then changed his mind. Talk about selling your partner down the river

HH Gibbs run out 58 (44b 6x4 2x6) SR: 131.81

Khan to Venugopal Rao, no run, off cutter, and and Venu is beaten outside off

Bravo to Venugopal Rao, no run, short and wide, but slower, so Venu is early into the cut, and can't get enough power

Bravo to Venugopal Rao, 1 wide, ties the slower offcutter, pitches leg, cuts in, and Venu lets it go

Bravo to Venugopal Rao, 1 run, Venu almost involved in another run-out. Fullish, swiped away towards long-on, and Teja wants two, Venu doesn't. Teja has to go back from half way, and the throw is just a bit wide, which saves him

Bravo to Ravi Teja, FOUR, good nudge, will get four, just outside four, fullish, and sliced away just wide of keeper

Bravo to Ravi Teja, 1 run, slower ball, outside off, and Teja opens the face for a single

Malinga to Venugopal Rao, 2 runs, dropped, by Sachin, slower ball, Venu mis-hits, Sachin runs back from midwicket, but the ball pops out. Dififcult chance that, running backwards

Malinga to Venugopal Rao, OUT, Malinga didn't need Sachin for this one. Yorker, on the leg, fast, Venu has no reply, tries to save the toe, which he does, but the ball takes the pad, and hits the base of leg

Malinga the Slinga to bowl the last over. Has been a good comeback from Mumbai. Will it be spoiled? Unlikely if Malinga keeps getting his yorkers in

Malinga to Edwards, no run, and he tries to bounce fellow-slinger Fidel Edwards. Fidel is surprised, and sways out of line

Malinga to Edwards, OUT, Slinga to slinga, see you later, Edwards makes room, but a perfect yourler comes out, low trajectory, headed for the base of the middle stump. Even a specialist batsman would have been incredibly proud had he got a single off this one

FH Edwards b Malinga 1 (3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

Malinga to Ojha, no run, who Malinga, slower bopuncer, who would have thought, it's an offcutter too, 116ks, and it beats Ojha's poke

Malinga to Ojha, 1 bye, another yorker, and how did that miss? pitched inches in front of off stump, and cut away to miss the stump, and beats Pinal too, one bye

Malinga to Ravi Teja, 4 leg byes, that's cruel, full, late inswinging yorker, Teja has no clue, it hits his pad, and moves to right of keeper for four

Malinga to Ravi Teja, OUT, Still no runs off bat in this over, will he bowl a last-over maiden? Will he ever, another yorker, Teja is right in front of this yorker, Dharmasena thinks long and hard and raises his finger. A double-wicket maiden to finish it off. Malinga you beauty

One doesn't remeber a double-wicket maiden - ever - to finish off a Twenty20 innings. What a comeback from Mumbai then. Since Smith got out, Mumbai gave away just 44 runs in 43 deliveries, and took seven more wickets. If Deccan lose, they will know where they lost it. See you in a bit
