Indian Premier League, 19th match: Royal Challengers Bangalore v Kolkata Knight Riders at Durban, Apr 29, 2009
Royal Challengers Bangalore won by 5 wickets (with 1 ball remaining)
Played at Kingsmead, Durban (neutral venue)
29 April 2009 (20-over match)

Here Bangalore's latest opening pair. Sreevats Goswami and Jacques Kallis are the preferred option in the chase of what looks, in theory, be an achievable target. But then this is Bangalore. Will the new opening pair fare better than the previous combos? Bangalore have regularly lost a wicket in the first over. Time will tell.

Ishant Sharma will take up the attack for Kolkata. Two slips for Kallis.

Sharma to Kallis, 1 wide, starts off spraying it down the pads and Saha gets into action to take

Gayle is in the slips, by the way.

Sharma to Kallis, 1 run, much fuller outside off, Kallis defends off the front foot and gets one

Sorry, its not Saha keeping. Its van Wyk.

Sharma to Goswami, no run, beats him first ball by pitching this one up and angling it across, gets some good bounce and Goswami chases loosely

Sharma to Goswami, no run, flirts again at a slower ball that angles across, gets beat here too

Sharma to Goswami, no run, pitches just outside leg stump, swings a touch, Goswami shuffles to try and play it away but the ball gets big on him and balloons up, Ishant runs in to take

Scratchy start from Goswami. Well at least Bangalore haven't lost a wicket.

Hodge come back on from around the stumps.

Hodge to Goswami, OUT, and he strikes! A needless shot from Goswami, clearing the front leg and slogging one gently floated up outside off stump, and he gets the faintest of tickles which van Wyk does well to hold onto for a smart catch standing up ... Hodge jumps up and a good innings is over

JH Kallis c †van Wyk b Sharma 23 (25b 2x4 0x6) SR: 92.00

Now ... is this a wobble? In comes young Kohli.

Sharma to Pietersen, 1 run, pitches it up, gets some movement inside, KP drives down the ground

Sharma to Kohli, no run, good ball! Short and he gets good bounce to keep Kohli wary

Thats a super over from Ishant on comeback. Kolkata getting some lift then?

End of over 13 (3 runs) Royal Challengers Bangalore 78/2 (62 runs required from 42 balls, RR: 6.00, RRR: 8.85)

    • V Kohli 0 (1b)

Kartik to Kohli, 1 run, tossed up on a length, Kohli punches to cover and calls KP across

Kartik to Pietersen, no run, good length that, KP was winding up but had to adjust to defend

Kartik to Pietersen, FOUR, oh what a mess in the deep! KP shuffles and then Murali holds back the length, so he drives on the rise over cover, Dinda runs across from long-off but overruns it and cannot turn back in time, then he says well I will have a dive but thats four

Hodge is back ...

Hodge to Kohli, SIX, flowing shot that, lovely shimmy down the track and thats over long-on

Hodge to Kohli, OUT, gone! Hodge gets another with a faster one that skids through to Kohli, who gets cheeky and tries to play a late dab but only threads a thin edge to van Wyk, taking another good catch when standing up to the stumps

V Kohli c †van Wyk b Hodge 19 (12b 1x4 1x6) SR: 158.33

Kohli gone after a cameo. In walks Boucher. His good mate KP at the other end.

Hodge to Boucher, 1 run, flat on the stumps, he gets across and chips it past midwicket

Hodge to Pietersen, OUT, oh what a mess this man KP has been for Bangalore! Shuffles about his crease, takes a step down and chips this up over mid-on, Saha runs in takes an easy catch

KP Pietersen c Saha b Hodge 13 (12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 108.33

Now is that a massive over or what? Hodge may not be getting many runs but he's nipped out three today. That was stupid shot from KP. Kolkata have come alive. Roelof van der Merwe on debut. Bangalore can still do this with ease.

End of over 16 (9 runs) Royal Challengers Bangalore 107/4 (33 runs required from 24 balls, RR: 6.68, RRR: 8.25)

McCullum and Ishant have a chat. Looks like a scene from Of Mice and Men. Boucher takes in the field. Bangalore need 14 from 12 balls.

Sharma to van der Merwe, 1 run, a mad waltz down from Roelof, who slogs a top edge over point

Sharma to van der Merwe, OUT, another edge and a wicket! Roelof what are you doing? Ishant pitches it up on a length, Roelof shuts his eyes and plays a really bad shot, getting a thin edge through

RE van der Merwe c †van Wyk b Sharma 9 (9b 0x4 1x6) SR: 100.00

He's not impressed me with his batting so far, despite that 48 on international Twenty20 debut against Australia. Roelof is a good bowler and fielder but needs to work on the batting. Anyway in comes Manish Pandey for his first game this season and under some pressure. Another twist?

Sharma to Pandey, 1 run, follows up with an attempted yorker but ends up full down leg stump, Pandey exposes all three sticks and connects well to punch the ball into the covers

End of over 19 (4 runs) Royal Challengers Bangalore 130/5 (10 runs required from 6 balls, RR: 6.84, RRR: 10.00)

    • MK Pandey 1 (1b)
    • MV Boucher 13 (9b 1x6)
    • I Sharma 4-0-15-2
    • BJ Hodge 4-0-29-3

Right. Ten needed off six. Gayle has the ball. Hmmm. Tense stuff. Pandey on strike.

Gayle to Pandey, 1 run, expectedly its full and flat and Pandey slogs it past midwicket

Gayle to Boucher, FOUR, super shot under pressure! Boucher uses his feet and clips the full ball over midwicket and beats two men in the deep ... what a player

And immediately a man goes into cow corner ... umm, a bit late.

Gayle to Boucher, 2 runs, fired in down leg, Boucher makes room and drives past extra cover, they settled for one but Gayle didn't collect it cleanly and the ball rolls down the track, Pandey scampers straight down the pitch and they get a couple

Gayle to Boucher, 2 runs, cool customer, is Boucher, making room to steer this past point, Ishant runs after it and the scores are level

Gayle to Boucher, FOUR, full toss down the leg stump and Boucher swats it away! He's been the man to guide them home after a collapse, and what an innings to seal a tense win

That turned out far more tense than it looked. Hodge bowled well but Bangalore had a few needless shots in the middle. Then Boucher came out and showed his experience. Gayle tried to keep it full and flat that last over but erred by not taking a throw cleanly and allowing a second. And then he served up a full toss. Bangalore win their second. Plenty of questions asked as to where Boucher was before the last couple games. He's a cool player under pressure. The Bangalore team looks pretty pleased, and why not? They now have four points. Kolkata again go down in a close game. You have to go back to the toss, when they misread this track. Bangalore read it excellently and went in with three main spinners to go with KP's slow stuff. And then KP struck first ball. Kolkata made a mistake, you can say in hindsight, by dropping Mendis. They then used Hodge, perhaps a few overs too late, and though he took three Bangalore won in the end.

First time I've seen five players come up and share an award for the most sixes. Few surprises that Boucher is the Man of the Match for that innings.

Don't go very far because we have another game starting at this same venue shortly. It will be the Mumbai Indians playing Kings XI Punjab. I'm over to bulletining that game, but someone will be stepping up to handle the live commentary. Be well!
