Indian Premier League, 34th match: Chennai Super Kings v Kings XI Punjab at Centurion, May 7, 2009
Chennai Super Kings won by 12 runs (D/L method)
Played at SuperSport Park, Centurion (neutral venue)
7 May 2009 - day/night match (20-over match)

4.28 pm: It's got cloudy at Supersport Park but there's still a fair bit of sunshine. Chennai are opening with Badrinath and Hayden. Irfan Pathan has the new ball, bowling from over the wicket.

Toss, 4.00 pm: MS Dhoni's called correctly and has decided that Chennai will bat. He wants his team to improve its fielding, they gave Dwayne Smith nine lives in the their last game.

Chennai have rested Jacob Oram, who isn't fit, and replaced him with George Bailey, the Tasmania batsman. Murali Vijay has been left out, in order to maintain the balance, and Manpreet Gony gets another chance.

Chennai: 1 George Bailey, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Albie Morkel, 6 S Badrinath, 7 Manpreet Gony, 8 Sudeep Tyagi, 9 Shadab Jakati, 10 L Balaji, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

Yuvraj said he would have bowled first anyway. He didn't sound too bothered at all. Punjab have made only one change, replacing the offspinner Ramesh Powar with fast bowler VRV Singh.

Punjab: 1 Sunny Sohal, 2 Yuvraj Singh (capt), 3 Simon Katich, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Mahela Jayawardene, 6 Irfan Pathan, 7 Karan Goel, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Sreesanth, 10 VRV Singh, 11 Yusuf Abdulla.

About 15 minutes to go before the cut off for fantasy team changes. Make them quick.

3.45 pm: The second match at Centurion today is between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab. Chennai are on a roll, winning three games on the trot, while Punjab are recovering after conceding the first 200-plus total of the season. Rajasthan's victory in the earlier game has pushed Chennai down to fourth, while Punjab are sixth.

Here's some interesting reading to pass time until the toss. Tishani Doshi casts an approving eye over ... err ... the best bums in the tournament.

Pathan to Badrinath, OUT, another first-baller! Irfan pitches short and wide outside off stump, Badrinath gets under it and upper cuts towards third man, VRV Singh barely has to move and takes the catch with ease, we've had so many first-ball ducks in the tournament

Sreesanth goes round the wicket.

Sreesanth to Hayden, no run, better length and the angle into the left-hander cramps Hayden who defends towards the bowler, did Sreesanth give Hayden a little stare?

6.40 pm: Ok, good news. The game will restart in five minutes (hopefully). It will be an 18-over match with no strategic break during the Chennai innings. The weather seems to have cleared up as well.

There won't be a strategy break in the second innings either. The Powerplay has been cut to five overs a side.

6.15 pm: Not good news from Centurion. The rain's back and it's pretty heavy. The groundstaff are scrambling with the covers. The weather had cleared and play was about to begin shortly but ...

Nothing to do but sit and wait for the rain to stop again. And we thought we'd left the bad weather in Cape Town ...

5.47pm: The rain has stopped. The covers are still on though, it's a work in progress ...

"I have always been wondering why can't they have covers for the entire ground instead of just pitch and center. That will ensure that the match starts as soon as the rain stops. Why use super soakers to dry the outfield. Just place covers on the entire ground," says Bansi.

5.33 pm: The rain's let up, the Super Sopper is doing its thing. Covers still on though. Supersport Park drains fast so play should start quickly once the rain stops for good. Apparently there won't be a strategic break when play eventually resumes.

5.28: Bizarre weather in Centurion. Rain, a little bit of sun, and therefore a rainbow as well. Still coming down though, unfortunately, and the covers are protecting the square. Check out Cricinfo's Facebook page in the meantime. Or you could read Tishani Doshi, who casts an approving eye over the best bums in the tournament.

5.18 pm: The rain seems to have eased off. More updates when I get some ... Wonder how the rain will affect the conditions. We can lose an hour before overs begin to get reduced. This is Punjab's third rain-affected game, they lost the first two.

5.10 pm: And it's finally begun to rain. It's been threatening to for a while and it's pelting down now. The groundstaff rush on with the covers. It's really windy as well. They are covering the square ...

Sriram Veera caught up with spinner turned umpire Kumar Dharmasena. Something to read during the rain break.

"I am a big Kings XI Punjab supporter but I am really disappointed in the way the bowlers are bowling at the moment. There is a method to bowl in such situations and they should learn from Glenn McGrath. For starters, aiming for top of off-stump is not a bad idea. I honestly think I can bowl better than a few of the bowlers. If possible, please send this message to Yuvraj. Ask him to give me a chance. Just one," pleads Shivir, who evidently thinks he can contain a marauding Hayden.
