Indian Premier League - 40th match

Deccan Chargers v Rajasthan Royals

Deccan Chargers won by 53 runs

16.30 Well, we are all set for the game, T Suman and Gilchrist open the batting, Morne Morkel has the new ball.

16.20 Ten minutes to go for the game to start, I think both sides are fairly evenly matched, though Rajasthan might have a bit of an edge. What do you think?

Doc from South Africa rates Morne Morkel pretty highly. "High time Morne Morkel gets more game time! When he hits form, he becomes almost unplayable in this format; he could take Rajasthan to the final". Morne does have a pretty handy economy rate of 6.89 in 30 Twenty20 games.

Riyaz from the UAE is another Morne fan. "It's a good move by Shane Warne to bring in Morkel, in fact he should have played all the matches."

"Really glad that Vaas has got a game. He should have been in the playing XI because of his experience and his variations. He knows his job and is handy with his batting too," says Arun Swaminathan from India.

16.00 Toss Heads calls Shane Warne, it comes down as Tails and Gilchrist decides to bat. Warne says he would have opted to bat as well, but says he's not too concerned as both teams who chased won in the matches in Kimberley a couple of days ago.

Rajasthan have made a couple of changes: Amit Singh, whose action has been questioned, and Shane Harwood make way for Morne Morkel and Munaf Patel.

1 Graeme Smith, 2 Naman Ojha (wk), 3 Swapnil Asnodkar, 4 Ravindra Jadeja, 5 Yusuf Pathan, 6 Lee Carseldine, 7 Abhishek Raut, 8 Shane Warne (capt), 9 Siddharth Trivedi, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Munaf Patel.

The big team news from Deccan is that there's no Herschelle Gibbs, and Dwayne Smith returns. Chaminda Vaas gets his first game of the tournament, ahead of Ryan Harris.

1 Adam Gilchrist (capt/wk), 2 T Suman, 3 Rohit Sharma, 4 Andrew Symonds, 5 Y Venugopal Rao, 6 Dwayne Smith, 7 D Ravi Teja, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Shoaib Ahmed, 10 RP Singh, 11 Chaminda Vaas.

15.50 It's a crucial game for both sides, a loss for Rajasthan will have them slipping to fourth, and drawn into a scrap with Punjab and Mumbai while a win will take them three points clear in third spot, three clear of the chasing pack.

We have two fantasy games running right through the tournament, the regular salary cap game, and the Pick 'em version (where you predict the winning team for each match). There are prizes for both of them, go here for details.

Warne's back

18.1

Warne to Venugopal Rao, 1 run, driven inside-out though the covers for a single

A lot people have written in to ask why Munaf isn't bowling. I have no idea

18.2

Warne to Smith, SIX, short ball, sat up nicely for Smith, he won't miss those, swings it over wide long-on for a huge six

18.3

Warne to Smith, 1 run, played to deep cover for a single

18.4

Warne to Venugopal Rao, OUT, good flight from Warne, Venugopal came down the pitch and lofts it down the ground, only as far as Ravindra Jadeja at long-on

Y Venugopal Rao c Jadeja b Warne 12 (7b 2x4 0x6) SR: 171.42

paul from the UK doesn't bother with capital letters as he sends in this: "i do not see the logic in keeping munaf patel out of the attack..he can't bat, he can hardly field so he needs to bowl his full quota of overs...i mean he has only gone for 3 in his first over for gods sake....honestly !!!"

18.5

Warne to Smith, no run, width for Smith, cuts it powerfully but straight to the fielder at point

18.6

Warne to Smith, 1 run, Smith plays it with soft hands towards mid-off, takes the single to retain the strike

End of over 19 (9 runs) Deccan Chargers 156/6 (RR: 8.21)
DR Smith    44* (29b 4x6)      SK Warne    4-0-36-1
DB Ravi Teja    0* (0b)      SK Trivedi    3-0-33-1

19.1

Pathan to Smith, 2 runs, slightly short from Yusuf, swung away towards midwicket, a fumble allows Smith to come back for the second

19.2

Pathan to Smith, 1 run, faster from Yusuf, 98.5kmh, yorker just outside off, clubbed towards long-on for a single

19.3

Pathan to Ravi Teja, FOUR, Teja is off the mark with a four, sweet shot that, on the pads, Teja gets on his knee and sweeps, ensures the placement is perfect

19.4

Pathan to Ravi Teja, 1 run, swiped towards midwicket for a single this time

19.5

Pathan to Smith, OUT, that's the end of Smith, he tried to slog it over long-on, it was a flat, powerful hit but is taken by Raut at the boundary

DR Smith c Raut b Pathan 47 (32b 0x4 4x6) SR: 146.87

19.6

Pathan to Ravi Teja, 2 runs, glanced to short fine leg, it's the last ball so the batsmen charge through for the second, they just about make their ground

So Deccan finish on a fairly decent 166 after a late charge spearheaded by Dwayne Smith. Ravindra Jadeja was the stand-out bowler, providing the timely breakthroughs, particularly the wicket of Symonds. Yusuf bowled well too, but it wasn't the best of days for Warne the bowler, who tended to be a bit short today.

Michael from the US has a word of advice for Adam Gilchrist: "Gilly...Please dont let Symonds bowl this time"

Dwayne Smith has been pretty good in the IPL so far, which prompts Kara from South Africa to ask, "I wonder why Smith isn't playing for the Windies, he is a decent batsmen and the Windies batsmen can't seem to buy runs at the moment in the UK"

Sarath from the US weighs in on the captaincy debate: "In many cases the Team can be only as good as the captain is. How can you explain the performance KKR otherwise? The KKR team is definitely better (on paper) than where they are now. A good captain can get the best out of the team..that's the key!"

Vikram from India offers a plausible explanation for not bowling Munaf: "Warne probably feels Smith is much better against pace then spin, hence persisting with spin and not giving the ball to Munaf."

End of over 20 (10 runs) Deccan Chargers 166/7
DB Ravi Teja    7* (3b 1x4)      YK Pathan    4-0-34-3
RP Singh    0* (0b)      SK Warne    4-0-36-1
