Indian Premier League - 44th match

Royal Challengers Bangalore v Chennai Super Kings

Royal Challengers Bangalore won by 2 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)

12.30 local Right the players are in the middle. Hayden and Vijay are opening for Chennai. Slowly the crowd is building up. Kumble will open the attack. I like this move. Credit to Shane Warne for setting this ball in motion during the 2009 IPL. One slip in place. Here comes Kumble.

Shubham: "Can someone tell me what this Uthappa does to keep his place?"

12.15 local Bangalore's chances of making the semis remain slim. And look who they are up against in their remaining games: Chennai, Deccan and Delhi, the three top teams. Now thats gonna take some beating. This Chennai outfit has won five games in a row. Bangalore have plenty to do to stop that.

"Bangalore never seem to have the same line-up for consecutive matches," says Marcus. "They don't have confidence in the team that has won matches?" Would you have confidence in that squad, Marcus?

12.00 local Time for the toss. Kumble tosses, Dhoni calls. Dhoni wins and Chennai will bat on what he calls a good track. There is hardly anyone in to watch this game. Chennai are unchanged. Bangalore have recalled Praveen Kumar and Roelof van der Merwe. Out go KP Appanna and Jesse Ryder.

11.50 local Hello champs, game 44 of the IPL and its gonna be the Royal Challengers of Bengaluru up against the Chennai Super Kings. We're just about ten minutes away from the toss.

Until then read the shocking truth about Jeremy Coney, the incredible flying Mandira Bedi, and the Agarkar factor. In Off the Record. Have you updated your Fantasy League teams?

Sunny skies in Durban, always good to see. Same pitch being used as yesterday. Those cartoons Neil McKenzie and Jeremy Coney are feeling the surface on bent knee and surmising as to what we should expect. They reckon you should bat first on this track. Amazing.

Chennai are number two on the table and Bangalore sixth.

Vinay Kumar will take up the attack. A slip in place.

Deepesh: "Why is Ryder out again? Don't they know he can be very much destructive and he needs another chance to show that! Surely if Uthappa gets to retain his place taking a look at his form, Ryder deserves a place in playing XI. I hope they lose to learn their lesson!"

1.1

Vinay Kumar to Hayden, FOUR, and immediately Hayden marches down the track, swatting the short ball just over mid-on's fingertips for four

1.2

Vinay Kumar to Hayden, 1 wide, bouncer over leg stump, Hayden flinches, Doctrove signals wide

1.2

Vinay Kumar to Hayden, FOUR, again he saunters down, this time Vinay errs by serving up a full toss which gets the treatment, swung away wide of midwicket for four more

2.2

Kumar to Hayden, no run, thats full and wide, Hayden throws bat at ball and cannot connect

PK is cleverer than he looks. Expect some good change-ups.

3.1

Kallis to Vijay, no run, back of a length just outside off and steered away to backward point

3.2

Kallis to Vijay, no run, a tad fuller, but by no means a half-volley, starts to come back in from outside off stump and Vijay is hurried into his shot, he adjusts on the flick and plays it back

3.3

Kallis to Vijay, OUT, there's a good change-up delivery! Kallis put in the effort and produces a short one that surprises Vijay, a tad late into his attempted pull, and he gives a catch to Uthappa down at fine leg, who gets across and times his collection to perfection

M Vijay c Uthappa b Kallis 5 (9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 55.55

Here's another man in form, Suresh Raina. Such a big player for Chennai.

3.4

3.5

Kallis to Raina, no run, another short ball, this time Raina gets in line and defends to point

3.6

Kallis to Raina, no run, a wicket-maiden over, fantastic! Kallis bangs it in short, Raina goes flashing and very nearly gets an edge on that, he just got up on one leg and flayed the bat at ball

Superb over from Kallis. Not a run scored.

End of over 4 (wicket maiden) Chennai Super Kings 32/1 (RR: 8.00)

4.2

Kumar to Raina, 1 run, too much room outside off stump and so Raina cuts past point for one

4.4

Kumar to Raina, no run, just short of a length, Raina goes back and pushes the ball to cover

4.5

Kumar to Raina, FOUR, ah the short ball is being used a lot against Raina, who this time gets into a tangle as he pulls across the line, getting a top edge safely over the keeper for four

5.4

Kallis to Raina, OUT, done in by a South African tag team! Kallis digs it in short outside leg stump, into Raina's body, and he just hops up and turns it off his ribs toward midwicket, where van der Merwe dives forward to take a good catch

SK Raina c van der Merwe b Kallis 13 (10b 3x4 0x6) SR: 130.00

Kallis to Dhoni, no run, short of a length on the stumps and awkwardly turned to short leg

5.6

Kallis to Dhoni, FOUR, top shot! Dhoni takes on another short ball by getting into position early, then rolling the wrists to pull that superbly in front of square for four

Chennai have been pegged back a bit, without any damage in terms of wickets, by Kallis and Kumble primarily. They still have Hayden and Dhoni in the middle, with a couple hitters in the bank. Bangalore need to win this game to keep themselves alive in 2009. The players and umpires are ready. Roelof to bowl.

M Muralitharan    4* (1b 1x4)      R Vinay Kumar    3-0-30-2
SB Jakati    1* (4b)      P Kumar    3-0-29-1

Good over to end off for Vinay. Last over coming up ...

19.1

Kumar to Jakati, FOUR, bangs it in very short, gets Jakati pulling and the result is a thick top edge over Boucher's head

19.2

Kumar to Jakati, 1 run, short and wide, he gets back and punches past cover and point

19.3

Kumar to Muralitharan, OUT, full ball now sliding down leg stump, Murali swings and sets off as the ball rolls into the covers, he's just short of his crease as PK collects, turns, and under-arms the ball onto the nonstriker's stumps ... basically Murali didn't ground his bat

M Muralitharan run out 4 (2b 1x4 0x6) SR: 200.00

Disaster of an innings for Chennai. Its 128 for 9. Did Murali pull a hamstring? He's clutching it.

19.4

Kumar to Jakati, 1 run, OUT, gets to the pitch and drives it down to long-on, the sweeper collects easily and has plenty of time to lob the throw back to PK, who collects and breaks the stumps to get Tyagi

S Tyagi run out 0 (0b 0x4 0x6) SR: -

Well now ... whats this? Bangalore have rallied excellently to bowl Chennai out inside 20 overs. Hayden scored 60 and the next best was 18. Thats real bad from Chennai's side. No support for Hayden, who himself fell just when he had license to really turn it on. Kallis set the tone for Bangalore, Kumble followed up, Roelof kept it decent, and PK and Vinay found further success. From 101 for 4 in 13.2 overs Chennai folded for 129 in 19.4. Thats good work from Bangalore and they find themselves chasing 130. Do not go very far because the second innings gets underway soon.
