Indian Premier League, 46th match: Delhi Daredevils v Kings XI Punjab at Bloemfontein, May 15, 2009
Kings XI Punjab won by 6 wickets (with 5 balls remaining)
Played at OUTsurance Oval, Bloemfontein (neutral venue)
15 May 2009 - day/night match (20-over match)

16.25 Punjab are forming a huddle before heading off to their fielding positions. Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag (as usual windmilling his arms) walk out to the middle.

Plenty of people, including Siri from the US, theorising that McGrath is being held back as a surprise weapon for the semis and finals.

16.20 Geoff from the UK thinks McGrath should be getting games. "Given how successful the other Australian retirees Warne, Gilchrist and especially Hayden have gone so far I am continually amazed McGrath isnt playing."

Razzaq from the UAE is just as amazed that Sreesanth continues to be in the XI. "Why is Sreesanth playing?? A smarter move would be powar coming in place of Sreesanth and Yusuf Abdullah in place of Luke Pomersbach . Karan Goel is a batsman so the team would still be balanced. There is a reason why Sreesanth isnt in the 20 20 world cup squad. I have a feeling , it will cost Punjab !!" (ending with two exclamation marks for emphasis).

** 16.15 There's still time to make changes to your Fantasy teams. We have two versions running, the regular salary cap game and the Pick 'em version (where you choose the winning team for each match.) Go here for details.

Pratik writes in from the US: "Vettori's void in last few matches bothered me more than McGrath's. Vettori is a very smart bowler who rarely gives any room. He is also a pretty good batsman. I am glad to see him back."

Who do you think is more important for the Delhi line-up, Vettori or McGrath. Send in your views, or discuss it with other cricket fans on Cricinfo's Facebook page. **

16.10 The teams are as follows.

Punjab are retaining Sreesanth despite his horror run so far. 1 Sunny Sohal, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Yuvraj Singh (capt), 5 Luke Pomersbach, 6 Wilkin Mota, 7 Brett Lee, 8 Irfan Pathan 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Sreesanth, 11 Ramesh Powar

Delhi have left out Amit Mishra: 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag (capt), 3 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Mithun Manhas 7 Rajat Bhatia, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Pradeep Sangwan, 11 Ashish Nehra. **

16.00 This is the first game of the tournament in Bloemfontein, the boundaries have been brought in a bit, the square boundaries are about 65m each while the straight ones are in the mid-seventies. Robin Jackman, in his pitch report, says 140-150 will be a defendable score.

Toss Yuvraj spins the coin, 'Tails' is the call, it comes down as 'Heads'. Punjab choose to field. Mahela Jayawardene is still out injured, and Punjab have brought in Ramesh Powar for Karan Goel.

Two big changes in the Delhi side. Dirk Nannes gets a rest but Glenn McGrath still doesn't get a game. Farveez Maharoof gets his chance after nearly a month on the bench. The other change is Daniel Vettori returning in place of David Warner.

Virender Sehwag isn't too perturbed at losing the toss, saying he would have batted first anyway.

Lee to Gambhir, no run, Brett Lee starts with a length ball on middle and leg, Gambhir tucks it towards square leg

Lee to Gambhir, no run, slips in the bouncer, 142.1kmh, just outside off, has Gambhir fishing at it, doesn't get a nibble on it though, that nearly bounced twice before reaching the keeper

Lee to Gambhir, 1 run, back of a length ball on middle, nudged towards square leg by Gambhir who sets off for the single, Sehwag is late to react and would have been run out if there was a direct hit

Lee to Sehwag, FOUR, Sehwag starts with a bang, short and wide, rocks back and crunches it through the covers for a boundary, Sehwag's never been one for the "get-the-eye-in" theory

Lee to Sehwag, 1 leg bye, pushes up his length, on the legstump, Sehwag tried to glance it to fine leg, is hit on the pads, and the balls dribbles behind square leg

Lee to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir gets another quick single to retain the strike, it bounced a bit more than he expected, adjusted well to turn it to the leg side

End of over 1 (7 runs) Delhi Daredevils 7/0 (RR: 7.00)

Irfan Pathan charges in

Pathan to Gambhir, 2 runs, Gambhir hurries down the pitch, but Irfan drops it a touch short, gets a bit of away swing, Gambhir flashes at it, gets thick outside edge which lands a few yards short of third man

Dr Raman from the UK: "Inclusion of all-rounder Maharoof in the team has further strengthened the DD team, unless he fails with both bat and ball. He is a perfect match to all-round capabilities of Irfan Pathan in rival KXIP. If he fires with bat, resting David Warner is not a concern at all. However, I am eagerly waiting to see McGrath bowling against Sachin Tendulkar in their next match with MI."

Pathan to Gambhir, no run, back of a length on the pads, Gamhir defends it to the leg side

One slip in place, keeper up to the stumps

End of over 2 (6 runs) Delhi Daredevils 13/0 (RR: 6.50)

    • G Gambhir 7 (8b)
    • V Sehwag 5 (4b 1x4)

Lee to Sehwag, FOUR, length ball outside off, Sehwag cracks it through the covers for a boundary, raises his front leg to balance himself as he plays that stroke

Lee to Sehwag, OUT, Lee strikes, the short ball works this time, it was quick and aimed at Sehwag's ribs, not his favourite area, Sehwag tries to play it towards backward square leg but gets a faint edge through to the keeper

V Sehwag c †Sangakkara b Lee 9 (8b 2x4 0x6) SR: 112.50

Siddharth Shah from the US chips in on the McGrath debate: "You would think that Delhi would atleast give McGrath a few games just to earn his worth or at least one game if they even want to use him for the playoffs. Am sure even if he is one of the greatest bowlers ever, without match practice he wouldn't be as effective anymore making him a risky asset to use in playoffs."

Pathan to de Villiers, no run, that ends another good over for Punjab, the last ball was nice and tight around offstump, de Villiers defends towards the off side

Sankalp from India:" I am more concerned with Warner being left out than Vettori being brought in the team. Warner with his electric fielding not just lifts the spirits up but more often than not effects a run out and saves a minimum of 10-15 runs in the field. Plus Amit Mishra isn't that bad, except the last match."

So Delhi end on a below-par 120. A great job by the Punjab bowlers to keep the formidable Delhi batting to that score - Sreesanth was superb around the middle of the innings, Lee dried up the runs towards the end, and Irfan was on song as well. Punjab's fielding was also top-class; they have now done half the job against the table-toppers and their batsmen should be able to overhaul this target to keep the semi-final hopes alive.

Brian from the US has a poser: "Karthik defending Lee's hat-trick ball pops up a question in my head. Is denying the bowler a hat-trick more important than playing a scoring shot so at least a single is added to the score? We have seen this over and over again and I still do not know what the correct answer is!"
