Indian Premier League - 51st match

Chennai Super Kings v Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders won by 7 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)

16.00 local Its that time of the evening. The two wicketkeepers are in the middle. Ramiz Raja is bellowing to the fans something about bouncing and bumping ... not sure what thats about ... anyways, ignoring him ... Dhoni has won the toss and decided to bat. He thinks the track will assist the spinners.

Big news - Matthew Hayden is not playing today. His place is taken by George Bailey. The weather looks good. McCullum says he would have fielded on a dry pitch. Not bad. Kolkata have made a few changes. Ashok Dinda, Ajantha Mendis, Laxmi Shukla and Anureet Singh come in. The men to be axed are Ishant Sharma, Shoaib Shaikh, Yashpal Singh and the expensive acquisition Mashrafe Mortaza, who was hammered in his first two and then the last over against Deccan. Thanks for coming, Mash.

15.45 local The captaincy of both teams has been interesting to observe. MS Dhoni's leadership has been impressive, and so has his batting. Dhoni has moved himself around considerably in the middle order, and backed up his two half-centuries with some cameos, proving effective at the death. With Hayden dominating the top order, Dhoni has been the stand-out player in the middle. On the other hand Brendon McCullum has only managed one significant innings. His dismal form was compounded by Kolkata's all-round failure, some close calls, some poor calls, management issues, the harsh Indian media, and even that blogger.

Some stats and trivia to pass the time? Why not.

  • Chennai have averaged 37.2 per wicket in the Powerplay, scoring at 8.45 runs per over. Kolkata haven't done as well, averaging 23.61 per wicket and scoring at 6.43 an over
  • .
  • Balaji is the only bowler from the two teams in the list of the top ten wicket-takers in the competition, with 13 from 10 games at 18.92
  • .
  • Hayden has struck 21 sixes in the competition, the second-highest in the IPL this year, after Adam Gilchrist. He's followed by Raina with 17
.

15.35 local Hi everyone, big game for Chennai this evening. They are currently placed second and will confirm their qualification for the semi-finals if they beat Kolkata. If they lose though, they'll face the frustrating prospect of having to rely on the outcome of their final league game against Kings XI Punjab, and possibly net run-rate to see where they finish. Kolkata ... well, not much to say. You all know their predicament.

Still a while to go till the toss. Until then do join Cricinfo's stats editor, S Rajesh, and Inbox contributor Sriram Dayanand as they discuss the IPL. Send your questions in to chatterbox@cricinfo.com.

Back into the attack comes Agarkar.

13.1

Agarkar to Dhoni, FOUR, a drop but that would have taken some stopping honestly! Short ball, Dhoni flat-bats that ferociously back to Agarkar, who starts to go for it but then does well to get out of harm's way because that ball would have sliced his ear off it was hit so hard

13.2

Agarkar to Dhoni, no run, fuller ball and eases it straight to the off side fielder

13.3

Agarkar to Dhoni, 2 runs, another drop and this one was a doozie! Agarkar bends his back and produces a good short ball that gains on Dhoni, who pulls but takes it high on the splice, spooning an easy catch to Kartik at midwicket but he jogs back to his right and fluffs it

16.4

Dinda to Raina, no run, slower ball again, this time he pitches it up and Raina slogs wildly, unable to connect on that delivery, so a crucial dot ball goes Kolkata's way

16.5

Dinda to Raina, SIX, but that will erase the dot ball and raise Raina's half-century! Short ball outside off stump and he pulls it very well for a big six over midwicket, well played Raina

16.6

Dinda to Raina, OUT, gone to a full toss of all things! Dinda slips out a wide full toss, Raina slogs and gets a thick outside edge that spirals up and settles right in backward point's hands

SK Raina c Shukla b Dinda 52 (36b 3x4 3x6) SR: 144.44

Agarkar to Morkel, SIX, wow thats flat, has to be the flattest we've seen so far this IPL! Short of a length on the stumps and before you can say hello dolly Albie flat-bats it over square leg

19.3

Agarkar to Morkel, SIX, ooh thats a shot! Agarkar hits a length, Albie clears the leg and tees off for a massive straight six, that was just in the slot and he didn't disappoint at all

19.4

Agarkar to Morkel, FOUR, good ball, but an even better shot! Agarkar nails the yorker just outside off stump but Albie is in sublime form, just opening the face and squeezing it superbly past gully

19.5

Agarkar to Morkel, 1 run, now he miscues one and scoops the full ball over cover, was planning on slamming that much straighter but survives as the ball lands safely in the deep

19.6

Agarkar to Dhoni, 1 wide, bad, bad bad Agarkar! Over a decade of international cricket and he's bowling this trash ... very wide outside off stump, Dhoni jumps across to hit it but cannot reach there

19.6

Agarkar to Dhoni, 1 leg bye, much fuller, again looking for the yorker, Dhoni tries one of those paddle shots to fine leg but cannot connect, the result of his expansive efforts is a leg bye to the off side

Well that basically sums up Kolkata's campaign in 2009. The bowlers didn't strike early, Chennai lost two due to run outs, Mendis was hammered, Agarkar was hammered, there were dropped catches, the spinners didn't manage a wicket, and the last over went for plenty. Hard to see how they will chase this. Chennai have posted a mammoth 188 thanks to Raina, Dhoni and Albie. Tough to chase under lights and Kolkata need to score at nearly nine-and-a-half per over. Another disappointing show from Kolkata on the way out.

Keeping with sad trends and farewells, Tishani Doshi reflects on how, just when we've got to know the teams, it's time to say goodbye to some of them.
