Indian Premier League - 2nd semi final

Royal Challengers Bangalore v Chennai Super Kings

Royal Challengers Bangalore won by 6 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)

4.28pm Hayden and Parthiv walk out. It's the start of the south Indian Ashes (no offense meant in any way). Praveen Kumar will open up. Play, calls Taufel

We're getting quite a few mails asking why Ntini was left out and why Oram has been retained. Same goes for Uthappa. I reckon they don't want to disturb their winning combination, despite a few non/half-performers. But it must be killing for a guy like Ntini to sit out game after game. The guy doesn't show it though.

4.20pm Stats time. S Rajesh has whipped up some numbers on the go for today's game. Check it out.

Arvind's not so lucky: "Enjoy your evening, you say? I have an exam tomorrow... on Sunday. ON SUNDAY!"

Vinay: 'What is the role of Uthappa please? Can we please sign a petition to Anil Kumble to instead select Sreevats Goswami !"

Srihari: "Bad move...Oram was brilliant in the field but he has not bowled in the last couple of games.Dhoni should have brought in Hussey..."

Toss and team news: Bangalore will bowl first. Kumble's banking on his team's good chasing record here. Just the one change for Bangalore. The injured Akhil goes out and Vinay Kumar comes in. Kallis is fit to play. The final line-up will be up shortly.

Dhoni announced two changes. Jakati comes in for Ashwin while Hayden returns and replaces George Bailey. I forgot to mention that Albie Morkel returns in place of Thushara.

Couple of mails have landed asking about Michael Hussey. He has joined the squad but there's no place for him today. Nice of him to join the team despite pulling out of the IPL earlier.

Chennai Super Kings: 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Parthiv Patel, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 S Badrinath, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Jacob Oram, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Shadab Jakati, 9 L Balaji, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Manpreet Gony.

Bangalore Royal Challengers: 1 Manish Pandey, 2 Jacques Kallis, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Robin Uthappa, 5 Ross Taylor, 6 Virat Kohli, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Roelof van der Merwe, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Vinay Kumar, 11 Anil Kumble (capt).

Pradeep: "Thank you God for Beer & Cricket!" ... Have fun guys, nice way to spend a Saturday evening.

3.45pm A warm welcome to all of you following Cricinfo today for the second semi-final between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The match will get underway in 45 minutes and the toss in 15. The final action moves to the Bullring in Jo'burg. The ground will host its third major tournament final tomorrow (after the 2003 World Cup and 2007 World Twenty20). Who will Deccan meet? We'll find out in the next four hours.

The IPL's all about fairy tale stories, that of rank outsiders shooting to the top. Rajasthan did it last year, Deccan are one step away from it, and Bangalore - the second worst team last year - have a chance to book a place in the summit clash.

One man responsible for Bangalore's rapid rise is Ray Jennings, their coach. He spoke to Nagraj Gollapudi on his experience. Read on. Test team no more, is the anthem.

I should mention Anil Kumble as well. He has made smart bowling changes, brought himself on at the right times and set a fine example with his miserly spells.

Pitch: "This pitch does not have the curves you saw there (pointing at the Bangalore cheerleaders)," says Sunil Gavaskar. Good joke Sunny. The verdict is - runs, runs and runs. Let's see how it goes.

Hozefa has a suggestion for the IPL brainstrust: "It's pretty sad that a team like Delhi who has constantly performing well through out the tournament and was on the top of the table most of the time is out because of one bad day. And on the other side team like Deccan is playing final now even after losing 7 match in their league stage. IPL has to implement certain changes from next time so that the best team should not be out because of one bad match. They should adopt the methods like what it is in European Soccer league, Or they should remove semifinal stage from the schedule and should play only finals between top two teams on the basis of all their league matches. To take out cream team and the best team they should play 3 finals if semi final is not there. IPL management should think on this thing very seriously."

Teams have lot more in stake in knockout and some perform better than the others. Gilchrist thrives on the big stage in knockout. Like the last few world cup final, where he stepped up his game and completely demolished others."

Terrific over so far

19.6

Vinay Kumar to Morkel, FOUR, a boundary wrecks the over, Morkel makes room and cracks a full toss from round the wicket, the ball heads to deep extra cover and lands on the half volley just in front of the boundary rope, it looked like it landed flat on the rope (which would have been a six) but 'eagle-eyes' Koertzen watched it properly

It's a middling target and Bangalore will troop off feeling much better about the way things have progressed. Chennai lost the plot a bit after Hayden and Parthiv departed. After they added 61, the next highest stand was 35 between Raina and Dhoni.

But Bangalore may not find it easy going because the ball is stopping a bit. The spinners got it to grip as well. Join us soon for the chase.
