Hyderabad, home to the Deccan Chargers, will not host any IPL matches in the third season of the tournament following a decision of the league to shift all matches scheduled to be held in the state. However, the decision - a response to a separatist movement in Andhra Pradesh that has seen sporadic violence - has sparked outrage in the state and in Hyderabad, the capital, with the regional government demanding a rethink.
Deccan's first game, the tournament opener, had already been shifted to Mumbai on the grounds that it needed extra preparation. The six remaining games - four in Hyderabad and two in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam - have been distributed between Mumbai and Nagpur, Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, confirmed on his Twitter page.
Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium will host Deccan's tournament opener on March 12. The next three, in March 19, 21 and 28, will be played at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur and the last three back at the DY Patil Stadium on April 5, 10 and 12.
Modi's announcement was followed almost immediately by furious reactions in Hyderabad. The state sports minister, K Venkata Reddy, said the IPL had a 24-hour deadline to reverse its decision; he also repeated an earlier call to the Deccan Chargers to boycott the tournament if the decision stayed.
G Vinod, president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association - a full member of the BCCI board - said it had not been consulted by either the IPL or the Indian board about the move. "We are yet to understand why Hyderabad is out of the IPL," he told reporters. "I request Mr Modi to reconsider his decision." He said he agreed with the minister that the decision was an "insult" to the people of the state.
This past week had seen several reports of IPL matches being moved out of Hyderabad. Concerns over the political situation in Andhra Pradesh have already resulted in the shifting of an ODI between India and Sri Lanka from Visakhapatnam last December, and two ODIs scheduled for Hyderabad, during England women's tour of India in February-March, have now been split between Bangalore and Mumbai. Also, spectators were barred from entering the stadium for the first two days of the Duleep Trophy final between West Zone and South Zone in Hyderabad because of a perceived security threat.
Deccan are the defending champions, having beaten Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final in South Africa last year. The result was a total turnaround from their last-placed finish in the inaugural edition in 2008.

Lots of people shown blame on shashank manohar, lalit Modi and BCCI. But actual blame should goes to political parties in Telangana and Andhra as they should be ashamed what they were doing since November 09. In fact no development was going on and it seems there is no active government in there. Before making allegations they should think and post their postings. In my view sports, entertainment and other public systems should be given exempt from strikes. I still support the decision of Lalith Modi to move all DC matches from AP. Its a wise decision and lot of people saying in this blog that they are not going to watch IPL 2010 but they are only first one to turn on TVs or browse internet to watch matches and IPL wont stop because of you dont see. You should protest before JCA act stupidly many times since last November and this is a lesson for Andhra and Telangana peple. At least now JCA should apologize BCCI for their acts.
Posted by... i was annoyed on hearing this news.. later i felt its for the best.. what if two groups one carrying a "jai telangana crap" and other with "jai samaikyandra crap" comes in and starts fighting over it.. pretty much possible.. i dont want world to know how bigger idiots we are...
Posted by no_second_chance_for_batsman on (February 14 2010, 14:16 PM GMT)Mr.Modi is going out of control..As someone pointed out in comments, its too much power to Mr.Modi a single person. A board should be formed to make any decisions. period. If not for ICL, there would not have been IPL created so fast. Too much of IPL is ruining the game of cricket. Its time BCCI & ICC step in -- and slowdown things related to IPL.
Posted by S.N.Singh on (February 14 2010, 13:37 PM GMT)I think, if it is for " security reasons" or political reasons cricket is shifted to other venue. That should be understood. People must understand because of "security reasons India had to shift the IPL llast year to South Africa. Because of one ETHNIC group Terrorist that is causing world wide problems we all have to suffer. Why don't the people in India be Indians as the prophet Mahatma Ghandi so desired. H e wanted an Indian India. The people of their States mut be able to speak out. Most Pakistani is still in India. S.N.Singh ( USA)
Posted by East_West on (February 14 2010, 12:02 PM GMT)i think IPL should be played in Countries other than INDIA. With all the nonsense goes around due to bombings, lack of security by the government to people of India [i am not even talking about foreigners] and lack of seriousness by Indians about the gravity of incidents like Parliament attack, past bombings in Mumbai/Assam/Kashmir...and the 26/11 and now Pune! come on Wake up India! and strengthen our country first and then talk about stupid IPL...now guess, R Jadeja wants more money so he was running around to find a better paying IPL team...wah bhai wah! this is what IPL teaches the so-called young cricketers.....money or country??? which comes first???
Posted by ChinmayD on (February 14 2010, 08:43 AM GMT)"Mr. Modi... What happened to Pune today...? Is Maharashtra safer than AP...?" 1) Pune is not hosting any IPL games 2) There is no civil unrest at any place in Maharashtra BTW, all the calls for Deccan to boycott... is Andhra Pradesh government going to compensate Deccan Charges if they agreed to boycott IPL?
Posted by vivek_khyati on (February 14 2010, 05:55 AM GMT)good for deccan.. they have always lost on their homeground.. so nice that they have more chances of winning.. luck by chance!! :)
Posted byI am not goin to watch the bloody IPL matches if they are not played in AP. I feel that the Deccan chargers have to boycott IPL3. We can understand the tense situation in hyderabad, but what is wrong conducting matches in visakhapatnam. Shivsena has publicly made announcements that they are goin to disprut the matches having OZ players. But still the AP matches are moved to mumbai. This is totally unfair from BCCI. I cannot understand how is Mumbai or Pune safer than Hyderabad or Visakhapatnam Simply Put together , Mr Modi and BCCI sucks bigtime.
Posted byIt is very unfair that we hyderabadis cannot witnness a great event like IPL. If security was the reason, then why games in mumbai after a threat by shivsena not to play austrailian players?.... After seeing all this and the pakistani players fiasco, in particular, modi should be removed as IPL chairman.
