February 2005

Lalit Modi is elected president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, defeating Kishore Rungta, whose family had controlled cricket in the state for 30 years.

November 2005

Sharad Pawar's group wins the BCCI elections defeating Jagmohan Dalmiya. Modi, who backs Pawar, becomes the one of the youngest ever BCCI vice-presidents.

September 2007

BCCI announces the franchise-based IPL and the Champions League Twenty20. Both are seen as Modi's creations.

January 2008

Eight franchises for the IPL are auctioned, fetching $723.59 million.

February 2008

The IPL holds its first player auction. MS Dhoni is the biggest buy, selling for $1.5 million.

March 2009

IPL dates under threat due to a scheduling clash with India's parliamentary elections; Modi's response is to shift the 2009 IPL to South Africa . The tournament is a raging success.

December 2009

Modi is defeated in the Rajasthan Cricket Association election but retains his BCCI post as he is also on the board of the Punjab Cricket Association.

March 2010

IPL sells rights for two new franchises. First auction is cancelled after BCCI objects to stiff financial clauses; second one a fortnight later sees Sahara and Rendezvous win for Pune and Kochi respectively. It's believed more important bidders lost out. First simmerings of disquiet
