Indian Premier League - 12th match

Deccan Chargers v Kings XI Punjab

Deccan Chargers won by 6 runs

7:58pm Right then. VVS Laxman walks out with Gilchrist. Hope Laxman plays the shots he's known for, he's looked really out of place, essaying some ugly slogs in previous games. Irfan Pathan has the new ball. Pretty silent crowd, hopefully Gilly will wake them up. It's play!

7:54pm And finally we have Punjab's squad. Adrian Barath, the dimunitive opener from West Indies who struck a sublime ton on Test debut at the Gabba is in. Shalabh Srivastava also gets a game. Mohammad Kaif and Yusuf Abdulla are not playing.

7:38pm Another intersting stat to chew on, from Sidharth Monga's preview. With one win and one loss so far this season, Deccan have usurped Kolkata Knight Riders as the team with the worst overall success-rate in the IPL. They have won 12 and lost 20 for a 37.50% success-rate. Just goes to show how bad they were in the first season. And also how quickly things change in this format!

While we wait for things to begin in Cuttack, a good 15 minutes to relive a couple of superb innings in Delhi - from Virender Sehwag, at his belligerent best and then from Matthew Hayden, unleashing the small, but mean Mongoose bat on Delhi's bowlers. As someone pointed out, it looked like Hayden was batting with Parthiv Patel's bat!

Toss: Sangakkara calls right and Kings XI Punjab will bowl first. "It looks a pretty good pitch, need to chase down what the opposition gets, that's the simple rule." Sanga's not too concerned about the fact that his side is still winless. "We need to be on top of our game against Gilly and co." Gilchrist reveals that Deccan is unchanged. We are still awaiting information on Punjab's squad. Stay tuned.

Hello and welcome to Match 12 of IPL 2010. It's Deccan, the 2009 champs against Kings Xi Punjab. An interesting stat to kick things off - Deccan have never beaten Punjab in four previous attempts. That should encourage Kumar Sangakkara's boys who are searching for their first win of the year. This will be the first game in Cuttack, one of Deccan's home venues this year, and their dismal home record thus far is an uncomfortable albatross around their neck.

I am Nitin Sundar, your commentator for the game, and Gopi Rangarajan is on scoring duty.

0.1

Pathan to Gilchrist, 1 run, tight run. Nice swinging delivery from Irfan, Gilchirst stays back and carefully guides it to cover and runs. A direct hit would have been interesting.

0.2

Pathan to Laxman, no run, short of a length on middle, very slight movement into Laxman. Taps it away to the legside

0.3

Pathan to Laxman, 1 run, fuller this time, on offstump, and shapes back in. Irfan half-stops Laxman's check drive but can't stop the single.

One slip for Gilly.

0.4

Pathan to Gilchrist, no run, misses the slog to midwicket. Nice shape away again and not the right shot for that ball.

0.5

Pathan to Gilchrist, 2 runs, nice swing again, and Gilchrist plays it in the air, off the outside half, over cover. Nice fielding at the cover boundary

0.6

Pathan to Gilchrist, no run, and again. Irfan's got that famous banana-swing that was the toast of 2003-04 going. Gilly drives off the front foot to mid off

End of over 1 (4 runs) Deccan Chargers 4/0 (RR: 4.00)

VVS Laxman    1* (2b)

1.1

Sreesanth to Laxman, 1 run, short of a length, swinging away. Laxman reaches out and taps it to third man. Definite swing on offer here.

Some issues with the sight screen. Gilchrist waves vigorously.

1.2

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, 2 runs, china cut eludes offstump, not by much. Angles across Gilchrist, cramping him for room, and the cut runs down to fine leg.

1.3

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, FOUR, shot! That one did not come on to the bat, and the length was not there either, but these things matter very little to Gilly who swings it from outside off to midwicket.

1.4

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, SIX, see you later! Similar ball, good length outside off and angling away. Gilchrist picks it early and hammers it straight for a six.

1.5

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, 1 wide, pressure's on Sreesanth and it shows. Attempted slower ball goes awry, down the leg side

1.5

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, SIX, and he makes him pay for the indiscretion! Sree tries to bounce Gilchrist, but at 134 kph, for a man bred at the WACA, that sat up and asked to be hit. Gilly was in position and pulled it high over square leg. Six more!

1.6

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, FOUR, creamed through the covers! Short of a length, angling from middle towards the slips, Gilly picks it early and punishes it in typical fashion through the offside cordon. Big over!

End of over 2 (24 runs) Deccan Chargers 28/0 (RR: 14.00)
AC Gilchrist    25* (9b 2x4 2x6)      S Sreesanth    1-0-24-0

2.1

Srivastava to Laxman, FOUR, welcome Shalabh! On a length, angling across, Laxman opens the face deftly and runs it down to third man, this outfield is lightning quick.

2.2

Srivastava to Laxman, 2 runs, and this time, he Laxmans it to midwicket, wrists all over that, a hint of inswing, but he picked it and tucked it away.

2.3

Srivastava to Laxman, 1 run, pulls the short one comfortably. Not much pace on offer, so the bouncer is not threatening.

2.4

Srivastava to Gilchrist, FOUR, short again, at 130 kph and Gilchrist did not time the pull very well, but it just kept running away from mid on. Four more for Gilly - he's off to a flier

2.5

Srivastava to Gilchrist, FOUR, just short of the rope! Problems aplenty for Sanga, as Gilchrist is laying into them, irrespective of the length. This was further up and he swung it from outside off to midwicket for four.

2.6

Srivastava to Gilchrist, OUT, against the run of play! Short again from the left-armer, Gilchrist was into the pull, probably a little early and it took the top edge and ballooned to short midwicket, where Mahela Jayawardene took a nice running catch. Big wicket - Gilchrist looked menacing in those 17 minutes.

Gibbs is the new batsman.

3.1

Sreesanth to Gibbs, no run, pitched up by Sreesanth and it moved away a touch. Gibbs came forward and drove to mid off

3.2

Sreesanth to Gibbs, 1 run, again, a McGrathesque line and length from Sreesanth, he needs to maintain it though. Played away off the front foot to short midwicket and Gibbs opens his account

3.3

Sreesanth to Laxman, 1 run, oh, that's a wayward throw and its smashed into Laxman's fore-arm at the non-strikers' end. Pitched up by Sree and Laxman part wrists, part drives it to mid on and they take off for a tight single. Srivastava's throw was way off the mark - he probably thought Laxman was batting in Hyderabad, instead of Cuttack. Laxman was caught unawares and that's a painful blow. He grimaces and gets rid of the gloves.

Laxman's retired hurt. Sad end that, and hope he comes back.

3.4

Sreesanth to Gibbs, no run, pitched up on offstump and defended off the front foot

3.5

Sreesanth to Gibbs, 1 run, again draws Gibbs forward, and he drives it softly very straight. Irfan puts in the dive and keeps it down to one.

Symonds is the new batsman.

3.6

Sreesanth to Symonds, no run, short of a length outside off. Symonds stays back and guides it to point.

That was a horrible throw. Would have missed the stumps even if they had been planted outside the batting square.

4.1

Srivastava to Gibbs, no run, nice swing, beats the attempted hoick and just misses the stumps.

4.2

Srivastava to Gibbs, 1 run, ball's not coming on to the bat. Gibbs gets forward and looks to drive, it pops up but safely to mid off

4.3

Srivastava to Symonds, no run, shorter this time, and an almighty swing from Symonds from outside off towards midwicket. Makes no contact.

4.4

Srivastava to Symonds, 1 run, more swing, back into Symonds and catches him by surprise. A hint of inside edge off the back foot, on to the pads and it dribbles between keeper and slip

4.5

Srivastava to Gibbs, 1 run, almost has Gibbs caught and bowled. It pops up off his bat towards the bowler, and just eludes the outstretched hands

4.6

Srivastava to Symonds, FOUR, ah, another inside edge, this time from Symonds, misses the stumps and flies to fine leg for four

6.2

Bipul Sharma to Gibbs, 1 run

6.3

Bipul Sharma to Symonds, 1 run, tapped away by Symonds behind square for a single

6.4

Bipul Sharma to Gibbs, 1 run, that's well run. Gets forward and taps it towards cover and Symonds responds.

6.5

Bipul Sharma to Symonds, 1 run, driven nicely down to mid off for another single

6.6

Bipul Sharma to Gibbs, 1 run, angles in this time towards leg, and Gibbs clips it away off the backfoot for a single to square leg

It's not easy to handle spin on this wicket. The ball is stopping a bit and not coming on to the bat.

7.5

Chawla to Symonds, SIX, Symmo tees off! Overpitched on offstump, he got forward and went dead straight and well over the ropes.

7.6

TL Suman    25* (21b 2x4 1x6)      IK Pathan    3-0-16-1

Sree to bowl

19.1

Sreesanth to Suman, 1 run, fullish on offstump and moved down straight to long off, on the bounce, for a single

19.2

Sreesanth to Jaskaran Singh, OUT, great work from Sanga! The attempted guide to third man goes to his right. Sanga gathers, does not bother with trifles like removing the gloves and calmly under-arms a throw to hit down the stumps at the striker's end.

TL Suman run out 26 (22b 2x4 1x6) SR: 118.18

19.3

Sreesanth to Singh, 1 run, almost another run out. Great yorker from Sree, RP Singh just about squeezes it out and takes off. Sree runs forward, picks up and tries to throw the stumps down at the non-striker's end, but RP was in the way.

19.4

Sreesanth to Jaskaran Singh, 1 run, whacks the length ball down to long off for one

19.5

Sreesanth to Singh, 3 runs, fulltoss outside off, sliced over the in field by RP, it almost runs down to the cover boundary, but is saved well by Bopara. Barath tidies up.

19.6

Sreesanth to Jaskaran Singh, 2 runs, its all happening! goes for an almighty hoick, mis-hits it and it goes really high, probably out of Srivastava's sight before coming back down, and he fails to gather the catch at midwicket. But he fires in a good throw to hit the stumps down at the striker's end. The batsman's just made his ground though. Sreesanth is quite disappointed with the drop.

Right then, super comeback from Punjab, after Deccan raised 100 in the 10th over. After Gilchrist's heroics, Symonds looked set to take Deccan to a huge total before Yuvraj came on and tied them up with a really good spell. Guess Kevin Pietersen should reassess his pie-chucker accusation now! In the end, Deccan's totalled 170 and Punjab will fancy their chances of getting that first win out of the way today. Join us in a bit for the chase.

End of over 20 (8 runs) Deccan Chargers 170/7
Jaskaran Singh    3* (3b)      S Sreesanth    4-0-51-0
RP Singh    4* (2b)      IK Pathan    3-0-16-1
