Indian Premier League, 16th match: Chennai Super Kings v Kings XI Punjab at Chennai, Mar 21, 2010
Match tied (Kings XI Punjab won the one-over eliminator)
21 March 2010 - night match (20-over match)

7:57pm Righto! Ravi Bopara and Irfan Pathan run out to take on the Super Kings in their own den. This promises to be a cracker - Sit back and enjoy!

Toss: Raina wins the toss and chooses to bowl. "We did really well in the last game and look forward to doing well. Manpreet Gony is in for Joginer Sharma." Sangakkara says that Ramesh Powar and Rusty Theron from South Africa are included. Sreesanth who has had a couple of nightmare games, and Adrian Barath will sit out.

It's Chennai, it's Punjab and it's a wonderful night at Chepauk! A warm welcome to game 16 of IPL 2010. Punjab has not beaten Chennai in 5 attempts, but will hope to turn the tide tonight. Ironically, Deccan were in the same position - winless in four attempts - when they beat Punjab a couple of days back. Can Punjab take a leaf out of Deccan's book tonight, and get off the bottom of the table? In three hours time we'll know!

Unfortunately, we are struggling with some major technical issues, but they are being sorted out as I type, and hopefully we'll have it all up and ready by the time play begins.

Balaji took a real good catch. It's his home ground, and he has fond memories against Punjab here. He got a hat-trick in 2008.

Gony to Pathan, FOUR, short and wide, and Irfan is batting beautifully here! Stays back and gives it the good old up and over, above cover. One bounce four.

Gony to Pathan, no run, better line, angles from leg to off short of a length, Irfan stays back and looks to nudge to point

Balaji to Pathan, no run, length ball, on leg and middle, Irfan defends off down to the leg side

Balaji to Pathan, no run, good bouncer, well-directed and caught Irfan unawares, he let it go belatedly. Bala was fiddling with his sleeve there, might have been a signal to the rest of the team that a bouncer was coming up.

Balaji to Pathan, 1 run, short of a length, going from leg to off, Irfan gets down and slogs it down to midwicket.

Balaji to Sangakkara, FOUR, super shot from Sanga! Waltzs down the track, takes the ball on the bounce and shovels it over the covers.

Balaji to Sangakkara, 2 runs, Gony's having a poor day, he's dropped Sanga at third man. Nice little slower ball from Balaji, decieved Sanga and the ball ballooned to third man, where Gony was late in running in, he tumbled forward and spilt the chance

Muralitharan to Sangakkara, OUT, he's done him here! Murali beats Sanga, by pulling it back just a fraction. Sanga thought it was in his territory, licked his lips and jumped out, but Murali was the man chuckling as his Sri Lanka captain fell for the bait. Parthiv Patel did the rest behind the stumps.

KC Sangakkara st †Patel b Muralitharan 15 (16b 2x4 0x6) SR: 93.75

Beautiful piece of bowling from Murali. We've seen some great stuff from all three spinning legends so far in this IPL.

Muralitharan to Jayawardene, 1 run, round the wicket, length ball, turning in from off, Mahela stays back and works it down to the off side

Muralitharan to Pathan, no run, big spin for the wizard. Turns sharply into Irfan from outside leg, and beats the sweep

Muralitharan to Pathan, no run, big spin again, the legendary Murali kind, from outside leg, to well outside off. Irfan went for the sweep again, but don't think even he believed he was going to make contact

Time out here. Our site is still on the mend. We hope to be live soon.

Balaji to Pathan, 1 run, full outside off, Irfan gets back and plays it with a horizontal bat down to deep cover

Balaji to Jayawardene, 1 run, length ball on offstump, Mahela tips towards the covers and they run

Punjab need a move on here.

Balaji to Pathan, no run, short outside off, Irfan looks to cut it but can't get it past. A hint of extra pace from Bala and it beats Irfan

Balaji to Pathan, OUT, and he's cleaned him up this time! Great, persistent bowling from Bala who has kept it simple, short of a length and on a nagging line. Irfan knew he needed to up the ante and looked to slog-pull the ball on leg stump, but could only get a meek inside edge on to leg stump.

Yuvi comes in, not in good touch. This is crucial.

Balaji to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, and it shows. Nicely concealed slower ball and Yuvi was so early in the shot, he was playing it in the last IPL. Pops up, but lands safely towards mid off for one

Muralitharan to Yuvraj Singh, no run

Muralitharan to Yuvraj Singh, FOUR, welcome boundary for Punjab and Yuvi., Sligtly short and turning towards the offside, Yuvraj stayed back and cut it nicely to behind square

Muralitharan to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, similar shot, can't time it this time.

Muralitharan to Jayawardene, no run, outside off and straightening, Mahela looks to play a delicate late cut and it misses the outside edge. Not by much

Muralitharan to Jayawardene, OUT, gotcha! Murali is the king of Sri Lanka as far as today is concerned, he's vanquished Sanga and now he's sent back Mahela! Turning offie on middle, from around the wickets, straightens as Mahela gets forward, but it beats his attempt to work it across the line and thuds on the pads. Umpires should give these out more consistently for the good of the game.

Morkel to Yuvraj Singh, SIX, super flat hit from Yuvraj! Short ball, he rocks back and pulls it with disdain over midwicket. That can be termed a DLF minimum!

Balaji to Kaif, 1 run, on to the pads, and he works it away towards midwicket this time to let Yuvraj have another go

Balaji to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, fulltoss on off stump, Yuvi looks for the expansive pick up over the leg side, takes the outside edge and runs away to the covers

Balaji to Kaif, 1 run, short and well wide outside off, but Kaif plays an impressive looking pull in front of square. Midwicket tidies up

Balaji to Yuvraj Singh, no run, beautiful back of the hand slower ball at 116 kph, it lands short of a length, grips, kicks up and has Yuvraj in a mess, as he withdraws the bat at the last moment.

So then, Punjab have been stifled by a clinical performance from Chennai, and finished at 136. Murali was at the top of his game, and he was supported well by the rest of the attack, and indeed by the fielding, where Chennai have stood out in the last couple of games. Despite Dhoni's absence, Chennai will fancy their chances to get there and take their record against Punjab to 6-0.
