Indian Premier League - 23rd match

Kings XI Punjab v Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders won by 39 runs

7:58 Now we know! Dada and Gayle walk out to open and Brett Lee has the ball in his hand. This should be fun, we're all set for the action!"

7:55pm: Five minutes to go to the start. Dada is padded up, and pumped up! Not sure if he will be opening today. We'll know in a moment.

7:50pm Sriganesh has come up with an interesting comment: "Gayle vs Lee!! During Earth Hour! All the power that's getting switched off is gonna be generated at Mohali." Good observation Sriganesh. Won't be long before Ravi Shastri comes up with his tried and tested: "The atmosphere is electrifying!"

Lot of you have written in asking why Murali Kartik is missing. Sure, a baffling decision. Not sure if he's injured - we don't have any information on that front.

Toss: Kolkata have won the toss and will bat. Ganguly reveals that David Hussey is in, as is Ajit Agarkar. Manoj Tiwary is back in the mix, replacing Chetweshwar Pujara. Kolkata have left out Owais Shah, Murali Kartik and Ishant Sharma. Iqbal Abdulla takes the spot vacated by Harpreet Singh, so a whole lot of changes in both these sides, that are desperate for a win tonight.

The big news is that Brett Lee is set to make his first appearance for Punjab today. Juan Theron will miss out, with a tight hamstring. Sreesanth and Kaif have also been benched, giving Vikramjeet Malik and Karan Goel a chance to play.

It is match 23 of IPL 2010 and it is great news for Kolkata and Punjab. By the end of the game only one of them is going to be at the bottom of the table, and that is good enough reason for Sourav Ganguly and Kumar Sangakkara to rewrite their and, more importantly, their teams' form-books today, at Mohali.

I am Nitin Sundar, your commentator for this game, while Sanjay Murari is on scoring duties.

0.1

Lee to Gayle, no run, on a length, on leg stump at 139.6 kph, Gayle can't work it away to the legside

0.2

Lee to Gayle, no run, faster! Lee goes up to 144.2 kph, and there's a hint of swing into Gayle's pads. Played away to the offside

0.3

Lee to Gayle, FOUR, pitched up and outside off stump, Gayle gets forward and drives nicely through cover-point. It is in the air a bit, but safe

0.4

Lee to Gayle, FOUR, 144.8 kph, beats Gayle comprehensively for pace, with that attempted yorker that tailed in late. Gayle somehow managed to get bat on it and it runs to third man off the outside edge

0.5

Lee to Gayle, (no ball) 2 runs, on to Gayle's pads, he gets it away between mid on and midwicket. Yuvraj huffs and puffs behind it. No ball, so Free-hit coming up!

0.5

Lee to Gayle, 4 byes, great ball, shoddy wicket-keeping. Fullish yorker on Gayle's pads and it looked like he got something on it as it missed leg stump and ran away, and Sanga could not stop it. Four more

0.6

Lee to Gayle, FOUR, top shot! Pacy again, but pitched up this time and Gayle's getting used to Lee's pace. Picks it up and sends it over midwicket for four. Expensive comeback from Lee this.

End of over 1 (19 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 19/0 (RR: 19.00)

1.1

Pathan to Ganguly, no run, slow and steady from Irfan, compared to Lee, nice line and length, shapes away from Ganguly's middle towards off stump. Defended

1.2

Pathan to Ganguly, no run, drifts on to Dada's pads, at 124 kph, on a length. He can't get it away

1.3

Pathan to Ganguly, no run, short of a length, outside off. Ganguly stays back and tries to work it away through the offside, cannot pierce cover. Three dots on the trot

1.4

Pathan to Ganguly, FOUR, backs away to the legside, makes enough room to loft the length ball just away from mid off and it is Yuvraj once again, who chases it all the way, but can't stop the boundary. Dada is off the mark

1.5

Pathan to Ganguly, FOUR, and that timing is returning! Length ball on leg stump, Ganguly again moves towards the leg side, and punches it well straight down the ground.

1.6

Pathan to Ganguly, no run, better line, curving away off a length from off stump, Ganguly gets forward and plays it away towards the offside cordon for no run. Kolkata have a good start here.

End of over 2 (8 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 27/0 (RR: 13.50)

Lee is off after that one over. Srivastava to bowl.

2.1

Srivastava to Gayle, no run, short of a length outside Gayle's off stump, he shoulders arms. Rare sight from Gayle, in any format!

2.2

Srivastava to Gayle, no run, that's more like it. Similar ball, Gayle decides to make up for his circumspection off the previous ball and looks to knock the stuffing out of this one. Good for the ball, he did not connect.

2.3

Srivastava to Gayle, no run, fuller outside off, Gayle gets forward and defends to the offside. Three dots to start the over again, the last one did not end well for Punjab.

2.4

Srivastava to Gayle, 1 wide, loses the plot, short and wide down the legside, Sanga has to run a few paces to his right to collect it

2.4

Srivastava to Gayle, no run, good ball, short of a length at 130 kph on and around off stump. Gayle regards it with respect and pats back to the bowler.

2.5

Srivastava to Gayle, OUT, Bisla you beauty! Short of a length, good bouncer, caught Gayle by surprise, he did well to pull it away all the same, high behind square on the leg side, but someone forgot to tell Bisla that his job was to man midwicket! He ran across, covered good distance, put in the dive and picked it up with two hands, a couple of metres in front of the ropes. That's a great catch, it was swerving away from him all the time!

CH Gayle c Bisla b Srivastava 14 (12b 3x4 0x6) SR: 116.66

Mandeep Singh is the new man in.

2.6

Srivastava to Mandeep Singh, no run, great over and well finished. Angled across the right hander, from over the wickets, Mandeep gets forward and shoulders arms.

End of over 3 (1 run) Kolkata Knight Riders 28/1 (RR: 9.33)

Lee's back.

3.1

Lee to Ganguly, no run, pitched up, angling away from Ganguly at 137.7 kph, he gets forward and drives straight to cover. Well-timed for no runs.

3.2

Lee to Ganguly, 1 run, over-pitched on middle and leg, Ganguly punches down the track nicely, Yuvraj gets across from mid off and stops it.

3.3

Lee to Mandeep Singh, no run, the bouncers are working, and Mandeep is lucky he survived that one. Good bouncer again, outside off and at Lee's pace, Mandeep was really late on the pull, top edges it and it pops up near the non-striker's end to the offside of the pitch, just away from Lee's despairing dive

3.4

Lee to Mandeep Singh, no run, pitched up this time, he drives well off front foot, but straight to point

3.5

Lee to Mandeep Singh, no run, he's sure put a doubt in his mind with the short ball, this was again short, Mandeep was hurried into the pull, and gets it straight to mid on

3.6

Lee to Mandeep Singh, FOUR, hope this guy has a driving license because he sure loves to drive. Pitched up by Lee marginally, and Mandeep was onto it in a flash. Lovely cover drive along the ground to the boundary boards.

End of over 4 (5 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 33/1 (RR: 8.25)

4.1

Srivastava to Ganguly, FOUR, aggressive intent from Dada and a touch of luck. Moves away to the leg side and looks to loft him over mid on. Gets a thickish inside edge that beats short fine leg and runs away

4.2

Srivastava to Ganguly, 2 runs, in the offside, there is God and then there is Ganguly, but at deep point, there is Irfan Pathan. He puts in a good tive to stop a sweetly timed backfoot square drive from fetching four.

4.3

Srivastava to Ganguly, 1 wide, good short ball, if it had been aimed at Gayle who is much taller than Dada. To Dada it is called wide.

4.3

Srivastava to Ganguly, FOUR, slow slower ball, at 96.9 kph, Ganguly picked it, waited on his back-lift and timed it nicely through the covers off the backfoot.

4.4

Srivastava to Ganguly, 1 run, interesting shot to the ball, short and wide outside off. Ganguly rises and plays a top-spin defensive tap to keep it down.

4.5

Srivastava to Mandeep Singh, no run, short of a length, cutting back into the right hander, who is in a bit of discomfort trying to play it away. He sure prefers it when its pitched up.

4.6

Srivastava to Mandeep Singh, OUT, it was always on the cards. He is a little susceptible to the short balls and struggles to pick the length to play the pull shot. This one was not short enough for it, he played the pull all the same, and it popped up straight to mid on.

Vikramjeet Malik to bowl.

5.1

Malik to Ganguly, 1 run, short of a length, angling across Ganguly, who stays back and taps it through the covers for a single

5.2

Malik to Tiwary, no run, on a length outside the off stump, Tiwary looks to tip and run to get off the mark, but it goes straight to point.

5.3

Malik to Tiwary, (no ball) 1 run, freehit coming up, the field can change since Dada's taken strike with that single. Drifted on to his pads and turned away behind square leg.

5.3

Malik to Ganguly, no run, bowled him! But it makes no difference. Ganguly picked his shot early and looked to deposit the length ball over midwicket, but made no contact.

5.4

Malik to Ganguly, 1 run, pitched up outside off, Ganguly gets well forward and drives to deep extra cover

5.5

Malik to Tiwary, 1 run, angles into Tiwary's pads again, and he works it away for another single

5.6

Malik to Ganguly, no run, length ball, angling across Ganguly who lets it go. Kolkata have slowed down after that frenetic first over and Ganguly needs to counter-punch.

Piyush Chawla, the team-India leggie for the World T20 comes on. Many eyebrows were raised by his selection, good chance here to silence the sceptics. Some disturbance near the sight-screen, creating a small delay.

6.1

Chawla to Tiwary, 1 run, legspinner turning away after pitching on middle and off, worked away off the back foot towards wide mid on

6.2

Chawla to Ganguly, 1 run, straighter one, short of a length, Ganguly stays back and cuts it away through the covers

6.3

Chawla to Tiwary, 1 run, outside the right-hander's off stump, Tiwary rocks back and works it through the covers

6.4

Chawla to Ganguly, no run, googly to Ganguly, misses the attempted cut

6.5

Chawla to Ganguly, 1 run, pitched further up, turns into Dada who gets forward and taps it to cover-point

6.6

Chawla to Tiwary, 1 run, pitched up on middle and leg, Tiwary jumps out and yorks himself, manages to squeeze it away to midwicket. Good start from Chawla

7.1

Malik to Tiwary, no run, full outside off stump, gets forward and looks to drive but can't get past point

7.2

Malik to Tiwary, no run, again outside off, can't get it away.

7.3

Malik to Tiwary, no run, short of a length outside off, tries to tap it but can't get it away

Pressure is building now on KKR.

7.4

Malik to Tiwary, no run, good short ball, saw Tiwary jumping down the track, and got it past his shoulders. Tiwary ended in no position to handle it.

7.5

Malik to Tiwary, 1 run, short again, but this time Tiwary gets hold of the pull after coming down the track, but can't find the legside boundary

7.6

Malik to Ganguly, no run, Ganguly tries to play McDilScoop, but it does not come out right.

McDilScoop - McCullum-Dilshan-Scoop.

8.1

Srivastava to Tiwary, 1 wide, very short and very wide of Tiwary's off stump

8.1

Srivastava to Tiwary, no run, short again, but Tiwary can't find the gap with his pull.

Ah now we know why Murali Kartik is missing today. He has a groin injury.

8.2

Srivastava to Tiwary, 1 run, short of a length slower ball outside off, Tiwary stays back and guides it in front of point. Only one.

8.3

Srivastava to Ganguly, FOUR, and Ganguly has got away a crucial four in typical fashion. Pitched up on middle and leg, he picked the length early, rocked back and smashed it over mid on, almost for a six.

8.4

Srivastava to Ganguly, 1 run, slower ball this time, Ganguly works it away to the legside and scampers across, if you can use that verb while talking about him.

8.5

Srivastava to Tiwary, 1 wide, bouncer attempted, but banged in very short, it rose well above Tiwary's head for another wide

8.5

Srivastava to Tiwary, 1 run, slower ball from around the stumps, angling into Tiwary, who works it away with the wrists wide of mid on

8.6

Srivastava to Ganguly, 1 run, short of a length, pushes Dada back even as he tries to press forward. He plays it down to mid off and they are off for one.

Time for a time-out.

Bopara to bowl.

9.1

Bopara to Ganguly, 1 run, short of a length, just outside off stump, cut away for one.

9.2

Bopara to Tiwary, 1 run, slow, short and wide outside off, Tiwary hits it away, the ball goes equally slowly to deep cover

9.3

Bopara to Ganguly, no run, length ball on off, Dada gets forward, misses, but takes his back foot up for a moment, it is back down before Sanga whips away the bails.

9.4

Bopara to Ganguly, 1 run, looks to break free but no timing in the loft over mid on

9.5

Bopara to Tiwary, FOUR, that's nicely lapped away. Short of a length, Tiwary got down and under it and lapped it over his shoulder very fine.

9.6

Bopara to Tiwary, 2 runs, short outside off, cut away behind point for a couple.

That ends Bopara's first over. He bowled medium-pace of the shortest run-up I've ever seen for a medium-pacer. Not including Anil Kumble, that is.

End of over 10 (9 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 75/2 (RR: 7.50)

10.3

Chawla to Ganguly, 1 run, pitched up again, Ganguly dances down the track but can't get under it. Drives it down to long on

10.4

Chawla to Tiwary, 1 run, sees him coming, shortens the length and fires it in at 90 kph. Tiwary can't get away the attempted pull for too many

Dada relaces his boots.

10.5

Chawla to Ganguly, SIX, vintage Ganguly! Pitched up outside off stump, Ganguly got forward and played that lovely loft over long on. Seen it so many times in the last many years, always brings joy to the beholders' eyes!

10.6

Chawla to Ganguly, FOUR, and another one! Chawla dropped it short, Dada was waiting for it. Stayed back and punched it through the covers for four more.

Relacing the boots turned the tide a bit, so Ganguly's gone for an overall over-haul here. Replacing a couple of pads.

End of over 11 (14 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 89/2 (RR: 8.09)

11.1

Malik to Tiwary, FOUR, short of a length, angling in from off at not much pace. Tiwary rocks back and pulls it away well through midwicket

11.2

Malik to Tiwary, 1 run, legspinning slower ball, Tiwary picked it and tried to hoick it over square leg, but could not find the gap

The over-rate is poor.. At this rate, the IPL could end up a loss-making proposition for Sanga. And we are not even talking about losing on the field here.

11.3

Malik to Ganguly, 1 wide, short and wide and called wide

11.3

Malik to Ganguly, 1 run, down the track and looks to deposit that over the midwicket boundary, but cannot get under it. Drags it down along the carpet to deep midwicket

11.4

Malik to Tiwary, FOUR, shot of the day until now! Yorker-length ball, but it was wide of off stump, and took some hitting. He stayed back and drove it nicely through the covers, beating the sweeper who was running across

11.5

Malik to Tiwary, 1 run, straighter this time, drilled down to long off.. Slight fumble from Chawla.

11.6

Malik to Ganguly, no run, swing and a miss, goes between Ganguly, who has moved well outside leg and the leg stump, through to Sanga.

End of over 12 (12 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 101/2 (RR: 8.41)

Dada's got to 45 off 32, that's not bad pace at all, but he needs to step it up going forward. Some good batsmen still to come in. Lee comes on.

12.1

Lee to Tiwary, 2 runs, length ball on off stump, a bit of a loosener from Lee, Tiwary can't connect too well with the hoick over midwicket

12.2

12.5

Lee to Tiwary, 1 run, short and wide, slower ball outside off, Tiwary got under it and played it in the air down to third man

12.6

Lee to Ganguly, 1 run, full toss outside off, Ganguly stays back and looks to smash it through the offside, but the timing is awry. Only one, they should have pushed for two

End of over 13 (10 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 111/2 (RR: 8.53)

13.1

Bopara to Ganguly, 2 runs, slow short and wide, Ganguly hits it hard down the ground, but the timing is not good again. This time they run through for two

13.2

Bopara to Ganguly, no run, driven straight to Lee at cover, Tiwary was well down, but Lee missed the direct hit.

13.3

Bopara to Ganguly, 1 run, fifty to Ganguly. Worked away off the pads to midwicket. It's been a struggle, but he's looking better and better.

13.4

Bopara to Tiwary, FOUR, Tiwary has played a couple of really pretty shots today, even Ganguly loved that! Yorker on middle stump, Tiwary kept his wits about him, and opened the face, it ran down to third man.,

13.5

Bopara to Tiwary, 4 byes, shortens the length, similar shot attempted, but he inside-edges this one, luckily misses the stumps and four more down to fine leg

13.6

Bopara to Tiwary, 2 runs, drifts on to his pads, Tiwary works it away towards square leg and runs hard for a double

Strategic time-out. The consultants come in to change the course of this match with their pearls of wisdom.

Irfan to bowl.

14.1

Pathan to Ganguly, no run, nice ball, follows Ganguly as he moves away outside leg stump and gives him no room.

14.2

Pathan to Ganguly, no run, and good fielding this time off his own bowling. Good line, cramps Ganguly again, and he tries to drive down the ground, Pathan reacts well to stop it

14.3

Pathan to Ganguly, OUT, in the end, a really tame end. Short of a length from Irfan, and Ganguly was desperate for a boundary after those two dot balls, looked to go straight and high, but the length was not there for the loft. It ballooned up meekly for a simple catch for long off, running in

SC Ganguly c Chawla b Pathan 50 (40b 6x4 1x6) SR: 125.00

16.3

Pathan to Tiwary, FOUR, workman-like pull from Tiwary, it was not very pacy from Irfan and the batsman had to make all the pace as he pulled it away, to find the gap between long on and midwicket

16.4

Pathan to Tiwary, 1 run, fulltoss wide outside off, Tiwary guides it off the front footto deep point to reach his fifty. He has opened up well after an indifferent start

16.5

16.6

Pathan to Mathews, 1 wide, slips down the leg for a wide.

16.6

Pathan to Mathews, 1 wide, and again. Irfan has lost the plot at the end of the over and Sanga will be quite angry. The over-rate is going nowhere.

16.6

Pathan to Mathews, no run, itched up and driven straight back, Irfan could not get a finger on it, else it would have been curtains for the non-striker, as it hit the stumps.

Lee to Tiwary, 1 run, short of a length, Tiwary is hopping around and cannot make good contact, Runs off the bottom edge to Sanga, who fumbles, they steal a run

18.2

Lee to Mathews, 2 runs, lovely slower ball, Mathews was beaten all ends up and almost fell down in trying to re-adjust and get it to long on, Chawla misfielded to concede two.

18.3

Lee to Mathews, 1 run, attempted yorker on leg stump, at 142 kph, he can only drive it down to long on where Chawla cleanly stops this time

18.4

Lee to Tiwary, no run, bangs it in short, and Tiwary can't time the pull shot, straight to midwicket

18.5

Lee to Tiwary, 1 run, another short ball, at 140.8 kph and Tiwary struggles to get hold for it again. The pull dribbles down between midwicket and long on for one

18.6

Lee to Mathews, FOUR, lucky boundary, seemed the only way they could get four off Lee this over. Short of a length outside off, Mathews tried to open the face and get it through the offside, got a thick outside edge wide of Sangakkara, and it ran away at Brett Lee pace for a four through third man

End of over 19 (9 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 162/4 (RR: 8.52)
AD Mathews    19* (10b 2x4)      B Lee    4-0-39-0
MK Tiwary    54* (42b 6x4)      PP Chawla    4-0-35-1

19.1

Pathan to Tiwary, 1 run, full and very wide outside off, he reaches it and guides it down behind square for one

19.2

Pathan to Mathews, OUT, Lee is at it again! Short and wide outside off, Mathews is down the track and times it well, almost over cover, but Brett Lee jumps high, that's a jump that would have done Bruce Lee proud, to pluck it!

AD Mathews c Lee b Pathan 19 (11b 2x4 0x6) SR: 172.72

19.3

Pathan to Tiwary, SIX, great hit! At long last, the law of averages have caught up and Tiwary times the pull shot, he timed it really well, and got it over midwicket

19.4

Pathan to Tiwary, FOUR, another boundary, this time through the offside! It is full outside off this time, Tiwary stays back and drills it through the covers.

19.5

Pathan to Tiwary, SIX, whoop! Irfan has been taken apart in his last over, towering six from Tiwary! Full outside off, he was down the track again and had the momentum going into the drive, over long off for six more!

19.6

Pathan to Tiwary, FOUR, Tiwary you beauty! Irfan has tried everything, and Tiwary's had a shot for all his variations in the last over. He pulled back the length this time, Tiwary was expecting it, stayed back and bunted it over mid off's head this time for four more. Great finish, KKR have got to 183!

That was a weird innings. Mostly, when you see a team reach 180, it is full of big hits and frenetic action, but today, having seen the innings, it is almost surprising to note that KKR got so far. Gayle started off with a bang, and Tiwary finished off with another. In the middle, Ganguly and Tiwary did well to keep things going, albeit at a questionable pace. There are many ways to skin the Twenty20 cat and KKR discovered a new way today. KXIP took 1 hour and 46 minutes to bowl their overs. Sanga will be a worried man.

The chase will begin in a bit. Don't go anywhere.

End of over 20 (21 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 183/5
MK Tiwary    75* (47b 8x4 2x6)      IK Pathan    4-0-42-2
WP Saha    0* (0b)      B Lee    4-0-39-0
