Indian Premier League, 20th match: Royal Challengers Bangalore v Delhi Daredevils at Bangalore, Mar 25, 2010
Delhi Daredevils won by 17 runs
25 March 2010 - day/night match (20-over match)

3:58pm Right! Game-time - David Warner and Viru-bhai are out there and I'm sure even the most hardcore of Bangalore fans would love to see a Sehwag-special today! Hat-trick man Praveen Kumar has the ball. He got some lovely swing going in the last game, especially against the left-handers, so Warner should watch out.

3:54pm Punit: "Delhi's got one of the best batting line amongst all of the IPL teams, but they arguable are the weakest team when it comes to bowling, plus they do not have any world class overseas bowlers except Nannes and Vettori to fall back upon and neither do they have any of India's bright bowlers and management have failed to get that balance into the team this IPL + No Mcgrath, hence Delhi aint competition enough this season for sure." Fair point Punit, let's see whether their batsmen can give the relatively weak bowling attack some cover today.

David, like me, is a fan of AB de Villiers and looks forward to a good show from the South African today: "I'm all for Bangalore but would really love to see AB come to the party! He really needs to justify all the hype around him...and I'm a big fan of AB!"

3:49pm Some more time to go for the start. Time to prepare for some more chin music from Bangalore - their pace attack has been on the button so far, pushing the opposition batsmen on to the backfoot. Young Indian batsmen in particular, have struggled to cope with the aggressive lengths. And who better than Anil Kumble to come on, when pace has softened the top order - he's been exceptional in this IPL, carrying on from where he left last year.

3:41pm We finally have Delhi's squad. Nehra and Gambhir are not playing, while Dishan continues to sit out. Andrew McDonald is in for Moises Henriques. Sarabjit Ladda and Yogesh Nagar have been dropped. Pradeep Sangwan and Kedar Jadhav have ben drafted in, so that's a lot of changes in the Delhi side.

Toss: Kumble has won the toss and Bangalore have decided to bowl first. No changes for the home-team, we are still awaiting details on Delhi's squad.

One team that has lost its way after a strong start, and another that has become unbeatable after losing its first game. A warm welcome to Match 20 of IPL 2010, it's the Delhi Daredevils versus Royal Challengers Bangalore live from the Chinnaswamy Stadium. It's not every other day that Virender Sehwag faces off against Dale Steyn, so get ready for some frenetic action! Toss in 5 minutes. Ashish Nehra is in the ground, having returned from Sri Lanka along with Gautam Gambhir, where they were treated by the renowned Dr. Eliyantha White. Will they play today? We'll know in a bit. Dinesh Karthik has walked out for the toss, so that rules out Gambhir.

I am Nitin Sundar, your commentator for the game while Gopi Rangarajan is in charge of scoring.

0.1

Kumar to Warner, 2 runs, length ball on middle and off, whacked by Warner wide of Uthappa at mid off who puts in the dive and saves a couple. Good stuff!

0.2

Kumar to Warner, 2 runs, length again, this time Warner goes aerial, but does not time it too well. Uthappa is in business again, runs it down to the boundary and saves two more!

0.3

Kumar to Warner, 2 runs, slower ball, this time dropped by Uthappa! Decieves Warner, who is early into the shot and scoops it high over mid off. Uthappa runs back several yards and gets there, but puts it down as it comes over his shoulder. Harsh call, but that is a drop.

0.4

Kumar to Warner, no run, tucks him up on leg and middle, quietly played off the back foot into the leg side

0.5

Kumar to Warner, SIX, and he finally gets hold on one! Praveen's not getting much movement, and at his pace, the length offerings are going to go for runs some day. It could be today, Warner made good contact and whacked it high over long on.

0.6

Kumar to Warner, 1 run, shortens the length and straightens the line a touch, played away to the leg side for a run.

End of over 1 (13 runs) Delhi Daredevils 13/0 (RR: 13.00)

    • DA Warner 13 (6b 1x6)
    • V Sehwag 0 (0b)
    • P Kumar 1-0-13-0
1.1

Steyn to Warner, FOUR, ha! Real pace this time, so much so that Warner is so late on the pull, that it races away to the cover boundary for four!

1.2

Steyn to Warner, 1 run, short of a length again, 142.2 kph and again, it's on to Warner very quickly.. This time, he's fractionally earlier on to it, and it goes down to mid on.

1.3

Steyn to Sehwag, no run, 149 kph, and respect from Sehwag. Stays back and check-drives the short of length delivery to the offside

1.4

Steyn to Sehwag, FOUR, and he's away this time! 144.4 kph, but drifting onto Sehwag's pads, he gets inside the line and flicks it away easily behind square.

1.5

Steyn to Sehwag, 1 run, 145.9 kph, back on to off stump line, and short of a length. Sehwag steers off the backfoot in front of point

1.6

Steyn to Warner, SIX, whoop! He's had a couple of sighters at Steyn's express fast short ball and has finally recalibrated the speed of his bat swing to hit it on time, and boy was that timed! Flies over midwicket for another six

End of over 2 (16 runs) Delhi Daredevils 29/0 (RR: 14.50)

    • DA Warner 24 (9b 1x4 2x6)
    • V Sehwag 5 (3b 1x4)
    • DW Steyn 1-0-16-0
    • P Kumar 1-0-13-0
2.1

Kumar to Sehwag, 1 run, slower ball from the much slower Praveen Kumar. 113 kph, Sehwag waits and works it off his hips behind quare on the leg side

2.2

Kumar to Warner, no run, slower ball again, and he very nearly has his man. That was short and so slow, Warner must be feeling very confused with the changes in pace, he nicks the pull, and it probably fell just short of Boucher

2.3

Kumar to Warner, FOUR, short again, makes room and goes over mid off, Uthappa makes a mess of it at the long off boundary to give away four

2.4

Kumar to Warner, 1 run, short, on middle and leg and Warner pulls it away easily this time

2.5

Kumar to Sehwag, no run, another short ball, this time at good pace by Praveen standards - 124.9 kph. Sehwag can't connect with the pull

2.6

Kumar to Sehwag, FOUR, slow and steady does not always win the race! Short ball outside off at 109 kph, Sehwag makes room by moving to the leg side, goes has a chai and comes back to lap it up and over, above the head of point for four

End of over 3 (10 runs) Delhi Daredevils 39/0 (RR: 13.00)

    • V Sehwag 10 (6b 2x4)
    • DA Warner 29 (12b 2x4 2x6)
    • P Kumar 2-0-23-0
    • DW Steyn 1-0-16-0
3.1

Steyn to Warner, 1 wide, Steyn's radar lost signal momentarily, that flew out of his hand, very wide outside off

3.1

Steyn to Warner, FOUR, fulltoss on offstump, Warner had no problems dealing with it. Stays back and punches it through the covers. Delhi are off to a scorcher!

3.2

Steyn to Warner, OUT, and that's the end of Warner! Again short of a length, and Warner cleares his front foot and looks to go over the off side boundary, does not time it very well and it skies to long off, where Vinay does well running to his left, taking it a couple of feet in front of the ropes

DA Warner c Vinay Kumar b Steyn 33 (14b 3x4 2x6) SR: 235.71

3.3

Steyn to Sehwag, no run, finally a length ball and Sehwag's eyes lit up, but he could not connect with the attempted cover drive

3.4

Steyn to Sehwag, 1 run, 145.9 kph, similar length, Sehwag makes contact this time and it runs down to third man

3.5

Steyn to de Villiers, 3 runs, length ball on off stump, pushed nicely through covers by AB. They run two and then Steyn tries to be cheeky, deflecting the return throw, which only goes away for an over throw

3.6

Steyn to Sehwag, no run, short of a length outside off, Sehwag gets back nicely and punches it, but can't get past cover

End of over 4 (9 runs) Delhi Daredevils 48/1 (RR: 12.00)

    • V Sehwag 11 (9b 2x4)
    • AB de Villiers 3 (1b)
    • DW Steyn 2-0-25-1
    • P Kumar 2-0-23-0
4.1

Kallis to de Villiers, 2 runs, short of a length, AB jumps out and guides it down to deep square leg and comes back for the second

4.2

Kallis to de Villiers, 2 runs, fuller, drifting on to AB's pads he gets forward and flicks it to square leg for two more

4.3

Kallis to de Villiers, FOUR, don't try the short stuff with me, AB seemed to say, as he got on to his toes and pull-slap-swatted that down from outside off to midwicket. Nicely played

4.4

Kallis to de Villiers, no run, fuller this time, draws AB forward and he essays the cover drive where an alert Manish Pandey dives away to his right to save a couple

4.5

Kallis to de Villiers, 1 run, slower ball, AB picks it, gets forward and flicks it down to short midwicket for a quick one

4.6

Kallis to Sehwag, 1 run, slower ball again, Sehwag picks it this time, waits on it and runs it delicately down to third man to take a single and retain strike

Right, so how will Bangalore deal with this now? They are not used to their opponents getting away to fliers.

End of over 5 (10 runs) Delhi Daredevils 58/1 (RR: 11.60)

    • V Sehwag 12 (10b 2x4)
    • AB de Villiers 12 (6b 1x4)
    • JH Kallis 1-0-10-0
    • DW Steyn 2-0-25-1

Vinay Kumar to bowl now.

5.1

Vinay Kumar to Sehwag, OUT, and he strikes first ball!!! Vinay's golden arm works yet again, length ball outside off, Sehwag goes for the almighty carve over cover, but it goes high rather that far. Kohli runs behind, makes a lot of room and very nearly collides with Morgan who was converging, but Kohli completes the catch in the end. Not much calling there for sure, but Aal izz well for Bangalore. Big wicket!

V Sehwag c Kohli b Vinay Kumar 12 (11b 2x4 0x6) SR: 109.09

Captain Dinesh Karthik walks in. Boucher is standing up.

5.2

Vinay Kumar to de Villiers, no run, short of a length, outside off. Defended safely

5.3

Vinay Kumar to de Villiers, no run, short of a length again, and angling in to AB, defended off the back foot

5.4

Vinay Kumar to de Villiers, FOUR, slightly wider and AB capitalises, gets some power into his cover drive and Morgan nearly cuts it off, running across from point, but it beats him

5.5

Vinay Kumar to de Villiers, 1 run, full on off and middle, AB gets forward and punches it down to long on

5.6

Vinay Kumar to Karthik, 1 run, edged, but safe. Short lifter outside off, and the airy backfoot drive went through the obviously vacant gully area, down to third man

The way Kohli and Morgan ran for that catch, reminded me of people who bat too low down to get a chance with the bat, and do not bowl! Desperate to make an impact, any which way!

End of over 6 (6 runs) Delhi Daredevils 64/2 (RR: 10.66)

    • KD Karthik 1 (1b)
    • AB de Villiers 17 (10b 2x4)
    • R Vinay Kumar 1-0-6-1
    • JH Kallis 1-0-10-0

Kumble comes on.

6.1

Kumble to Karthik, 1 run, loopy legspinner on middle and off, gets forward and drives along the round through covers

6.2

Kumble to de Villiers, 2 runs, slightly outside off this time, AB comes forward and drives it through the covers

6.3

Kumble to de Villiers, 2 runs, drifts on to the pads, he stays back and works it away to square leg, where Steyn picks up and fires a great throw, but it misses the stumps by a whisker, giving AB enough time to get in, before Boucher can collect and break the stumps. Third umpire says not out

6.4

Kumble to de Villiers, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, gets back and works it away to midwicket. No turn here for Jumbo.

6.5

Kumble to Karthik, 1 run, full on middle, gets forward and works it away with the wrists

6.6

Kumble to de Villiers, FOUR, short and well wide outside off stump, but it looked like AB had picked his spot much earlier. Swats it down off the backfoot, through midwicket. Nice shot, it raced away

End of over 7 (11 runs) Delhi Daredevils 75/2 (RR: 10.71)

    • AB de Villiers 26 (14b 3x4)
    • KD Karthik 3 (3b)
    • A Kumble 1-0-11-0
    • R Vinay Kumar 1-0-6-1

Rishi: "i wish Sehwag would have been there when Kumble would bowl. Oh man.. what a contest it would have been!!" You stole the words from my mouth, mate.

7.1

Vinay Kumar to Karthik, 1 run, short of a length, drifts on to Karthik's pads. Stays back and works it away behind square.

7.2

Vinay Kumar to de Villiers, 1 run, back of the hand slower delivery, at 104.8 kph. AB stays back and taps it down to the leg side to rotate strike.

7.3

Vinay Kumar to Karthik, no run, effort ball, short outside off, he lets it go.

7.4

Vinay Kumar to Karthik, no run, full outside off, DK gets forward and plays a half-hearted check-drive, it is cut off by short cover.

7.5

7.6

Vinay Kumar to de Villiers, 1 run, another back of the hand slower ball, very full on middle and off, gets forward and drives it down to wide long off

End of over 8 (4 runs) Delhi Daredevils 79/2 (RR: 9.87)

    • AB de Villiers 28 (16b 3x4)
    • KD Karthik 5 (7b)
    • R Vinay Kumar 2-0-10-1

8.1

8.2

Kumble to Karthik, 1 run, slightly fuller this time, DK stays back and runs it down to short third man

8.3

Kumble to de Villiers, 1 run, on to AB's pads, he gets forward and easily works it away for one.

8.4

Kumble to Karthik, 1 run, full outside DK's offstump and he again stays back to work it down to third man. They complete a risky single, AB makes it to the striker's end in time. DK might have been in toruble at the other end.

8.5

Kumble to de Villiers, 1 run, punched down to wide long on where Kohli cleans up

8.6

Kumble to Karthik, FOUR, pulls out an inch-perfect sweep shot. It was full outside off, but DK was eyeing the gap between square leg and deep midwicket, he got down on one knee and bisected the gap to perfection. Nice shot

End of over 9 (9 runs) Delhi Daredevils 88/2 (RR: 9.77)

    • KD Karthik 11 (10b 1x4)
    • AB de Villiers 31 (19b 3x4)
    • A Kumble 2-0-20-0
    • R Vinay Kumar 2-0-10-1
9.1

Vinay Kumar to de Villiers, 1 run, short of a length, and cramps him for room, angling it into AB, who stays back and taps it to short midwicket. Lots of singles in this partnership

Boucher is standing up when AB faces and goes back for DK.

9.2

Vinay Kumar to Karthik, 1 wide, short and wide outside off, DK lets it go and it is called wide

9.2

Vinay Kumar to Karthik, no run, short of a length again and DK premeditates the sashay down the track. Still can't get to the length of the ball and can't get it away for many through the legside

9.3

Vinay Kumar to Karthik, 1 run, draws him forward, batsman obliges and eases it off the front foot to wide mid off

9.4

Vinay Kumar to de Villiers, 1 run, drifts on to the pads this time, and he plays it away wide of midwicket

    • AB de Villiers 35 (22b 3x4)
    • KD Karthik 13 (13b 1x4)
    • R Vinay Kumar 3-0-17-1

10.1

Kallis to Karthik, 1 run, length ball on off stump, worked away easily down to long on

10.2

Kallis to de Villiers, 1 run, another slower ball, cleverly done. Saw AB coming down the track and pulled it back a touch. Still gets it down to long on for one.

10.3

Kallis to Karthik, 1 run, and again - 111.5 kph. Karthik works it away to midwicket

Game of cat and mouse here. Both teams seem to be content to continue with their tactics.

10.4

Kallis to de Villiers, no run, wider outside off, and this time AB can't get it away past point. Rare dot ball

10.5

Kallis to de Villiers, 1 run, another off cutter from Kallis, he stays back and works it away to midwicket

10.6

Kallis to Karthik, 1 run, low fulltoss on offstump, but Karthik is unable to make much use of it and drives it down to long off to retain strike

End of over 11 (5 runs) Delhi Daredevils 100/2 (RR: 9.09)

    • KD Karthik 16 (16b 1x4)
    • AB de Villiers 37 (25b 3x4)

Steyn is back on, to break the deadlock.

11.1

Steyn to Karthik, no run, quick length ball on off stump, played away off front foot to short cover

11.2

Steyn to Karthik, no run, lovely slower delivery, runs his fingers over that one and beats Karthik's outside edge as he walks down the track

11.3

Steyn to Karthik, 1 run, pacy this time! Pegs him back with a short, fast ball, DK hits it straight to Kohli at point and runs for a non-existent single. Kohli misses the direct hit, it would have been curtains.

11.4

Steyn to de Villiers, OUT, no escape this time! Poor Karthik got no chance to capitalise on that reprieve, AB essays the most straight straight-drive you'll ever see and it was too straight for Karthik's good. Steyn got a finger on that on his follow through and it crashed on to the non-striker's end stumps. DK was well out and kept going.

KD Karthik run out 17 (19b 1x4 0x6) SR: 89.47

11.5

Steyn to de Villiers, 1 run, played away to cover to turn the strike over

11.6

    • KM Jadhav 1 (1b)
    • AB de Villiers 38 (27b 3x4)
    • DW Steyn 3-0-28-1
    • JH Kallis 2-0-15-0
12.1

Kallis to Jadhav, 1 wide, short ball, drifts down the legside and misses the attempted pull. Bangalore go up in a loud appeal. Umpire Rudi languorously raises his arms to signal wide

12.1

Kallis to Jadhav, no run, short and just outside off, looks to cut it away, can't find the gap

12.2

Kallis to Jadhav, 1 run, straighter this time, allows Jadhav to work it away to square leg.

He has a pronounced front-foot press, this player Jadhav

12.3

Kallis to de Villiers, 1 run, another slower ball, Bangalore seem to have replaced the short ball strategy with the slower ball strategy today. Gets forward and drives down the ground.

12.4

Kallis to Jadhav, FOUR, nice shot! Tries the short ball this time, Jadhav hit it well, if somewhat late and the forehand crosscourt winner went straight, to the left of and over mid off

12.5

12.6

Kallis to de Villiers, 1 run, slower ball again, short of a length, AB waited on it and guided it through the covers for one

Kumble to Jadhav, 1 run, drifts on to his pads, stays back and works it down to square leg

13.4

Kumble to Jadhav, no run

13.5

Kumble to Jadhav, no run, great shot and even better fielding. Picks the slider outside off and expertly works it to the left of Uthappa at point, but he puts in some big strides to cut off some runs

13.6

Kumble to Jadhav, 1 run, on to his pads this time, and Jadhav works it away easily to the legside.

Jadhav moves around a bit before meeting the ball, otherwise he looks at ease for a young player.

End of over 14 (4 runs) Delhi Daredevils 116/3 (RR: 8.28)

    • KM Jadhav 9 (9b 1x4)
    • AB de Villiers 42 (31b 3x4)

14.4

Kallis to Jadhav, SIX, and he squeezes it over long off's head for a six! 14.6

Kallis to Jadhav, no run, good short ball this time, very well directed and Jadhav was late on the shot. Carries through to Boucher

    • AB de Villiers 43 (32b 3x4)
    • JH Kallis 4-0-36-0

15.1

Kumble to de Villiers, 1 run, length ball on leg stump, stays back and punches it through the midwicket region

15.2

Kumble to Jadhav, 1 run, down the track and goes for the loft over long on, but does not time it too well. One bounce to long off

15.3

Kumble to de Villiers, no run, lovely ball, holds it back and AB is early in to the length, gets a leading edge back to the bowler

15.4

Kumble to de Villiers, 1 run, gets it away this time, down to midwicket

15.5

Kumble to Jadhav, 2 runs, shot of the day, mis-field of the day and priceless expression of the day all in one! Dravid chases and tidies up, keeps it down to two.

15.6

Kumble to Jadhav, 1 run, works it away to the leg side this time for a single. Jadhav's looking good.

Strategic, mathematical, tactical, nature's call time-out here. Call it what you want.

    • KM Jadhav 24 (17b 2x4 1x6)
    • AB de Villiers 45 (35b 3x4)
    • A Kumble 4-0-30-0
    • JH Kallis 4-0-36-0
16.1

Kumar to Jadhav, OUT, Pandemonium! Nice yorker from Praveen, he digs it out behind square on the offside and runs for a tight single. Morgan fires a superb throw, that possibly caught the batsman short, RCB's fielders surely thought so and were celebrating. The ball ricocheted, and was going for runs, Kumble was furious that his side was celebrating without tidying up, before Kohli said he thought it was out. And he was right, the third umpire thought so too. AB's gone!

AB de Villiers run out 45 (35b 3x4 0x6) SR: 128.57

Great finish there for Delhi, they have Kedar Jadhav's blinder to thank for a really strong score in the end. Warner gave them a great start, but the regular loss of wickets set them back in the middle overs. AB de Villiers stayed put and guided them through the middle overs, and it was the unheralded Jadhav who teed off in the end. McDonald did well in his company, and Delhi have managed 183.

As a lot of alert readers have pointed out, tomorrow is Kedar Jadhav's birthday. What a wonderful gift it will be, if his side can pull this off. He's done his bit for sure.

Don't go anywhere, the chase will begin in a jiffy.
