Indian Premier League, 50th match: Chennai Super Kings v Delhi Daredevils at Chennai, Apr 15, 2010
Delhi Daredevils won by 6 wickets (with 8 balls remaining)
15 April 2010 - night match (20-over match)

7:57pm Vijay runs out with Hayden, who is due big time. If the conditions of play remain the same as the other day, there will also be dew big time. Nannes to bowl after a bit of a break. Ready, start ACTION!

7:51 pm Gyanesh Prakash makes an interesting observation. "What an irony, the pitch is considered to be turner and two of World best spinners cannot make it to their respective sides." Indeed. One wonders if 4 overseas players is too less.

Vijay: "Muralidharan is married to a chennai girl. Wouldn't that make him an Indian citizen? Surely he would qualify as a local player so chennai can field another overseas player!" I like that line of thinking. By the same coin, Shoaib Malik can possibly play as a local player for Deccan Chargers next year. Go Chargers!

7:45 pm Confirmed, Andrew McDonald and AB de Villiers miss out for Delhi. Umesh Yadav has also been included ahead of Pradeep Sangwan. Sarabjit Ladda makes way for Mithun Manhas, so that is two changes Gambhir did not list during the toss.

Kris Srikkanth clarifies on air that it is unfortunate that M Vijay and Robin Uthappa struck form after the selection of the Indian team for the World Twenty20. The ICC rules required the team to be picked one month in advance. Nothing can be done now. Sad smiley.

7:40 pm Still awaiting details on who is out for Delhi. Their biggest problem in recent times has been running between the wickets. Won't get any easier in noisy Chepauk. Here's hoping Sehwag and Gambhir run well, and let the bat do the walking... talking... whatever.

Toss: MS Dhoni wins the toss and chooses to bat. Couple of changes - Balaji in for Anirudha Srikkanth, Michael Hussey in for Muralitharan.

Gambhir: "I would have loved to bat first too. We haven't chased well, this is the time to turn it around. We have got Dirk Nannes and Tillakaratne Dilshan in." This is huge - it is a big game and Delhi have dusted off Dilshan from the bench! Still no room for Dan "the Man" Vettori.

And that's a fine fifty, well played IPL! It's game no. 50, it is Chennai v Delhi at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The permutations are endless, but the team that wins today will do itself a huge favour as far as the semifinal race is concerned. Mumbai have confirmed their place in the last four, and Bangalore are virtually assured of a spot. Rajasthan and Kolkata have suffered crushing defeats in the recent past, to fall behind. That leaves Chennai, Delhi and Deccan in a three-way battle to grab the last two spots. Of course, mathematically, Ganguly and Warne are still not out of it either. At some point, teams will start falling completely out of contention, until then let's watch the cricket and stare at the technological marvel that is the blimp. Or you could refer to S Rajesh's ready reckoner that succinctly collates the various possibilities. Toss coming our way in a bit.

I am Nitin Sundar, your commentator for the day.

Nannes to Vijay, 2 wides, ah, radar is not yet turned on, Nannes slips down the leg, Karthik makes a diving half-stop to restrict it to two wides

Nannes to Hayden, no run, on Hayden's pads, he flicks straight to Warner at midwicket who attempts to throw down the non-striker's stumps. No harm done.

Nannes to Hayden, 1 run, Dropped by Gambhir! Hayden is on a pair of sorts, having got out for a blob in the previous game, he is early into the shot, off a full toss and the drive pops straight up over the bowler's head. Gambhir and Mishra converge from mid on and mid off, and there is no calling. Gambhir gets there, they run across each other, but he fluffs it. Communication would have helped, would have been a sitter for either player.

Nannes to Vijay, no run, good short ball, Vijay gets back and blocks

Nannes to Vijay, no run, length ball on Vijay's middle stump, handled with care

Nannes to Vijay, FOUR, full toss on Vijay's pads and he is in too good form to not cash in. Stays back and flicks it with minimum fuss through midwicket - mid on gap. Nicely played.

Nannes to Vijay, 2 runs, nicely played, not timed as well as the previous one. Over-pitched outside off, Vijay gets forward and drives along the carpet through the covers.

End of over 1 (9 runs) Chennai Super Kings 9/0 (RR: 9.00)

Nehra to Hayden, no run, nice away movement from Haydos, he shoulders arms

Nehra to Hayden, no run, and again, good line and length from over the sticks. Nehra puts it back of a length and shapes it away nicely

Nehra to Hayden, OUT, Collingwood shows how it is done! Hayden's poor IPL continues, he walked down the pitch this time, expecting to get to the pitch, but Nehra shortened the length, Hayden went through with the straight drive and spooned it straight up over cover. Colly runs back and takes it easy. Big wicket, Hayden murdered them the last time.

Dhoni is in. At the non-striker's end.

Nehra to Vijay, no run, another good ball, angling across Vijay who has nothing to do with it. Gets back and shoulders arms

Nehra to Vijay, FOUR, form may be temporary, but while it lasts it is a great thing for Vijay! That was not a short ball by any stretch of imagination, Vijay picked the length early and pulled it really well, really fine. He must have seen it even before it came out of Nehra's hand!

Nehra to Vijay, no run, finishes off with another dot - good over from Nehra. Outside Vijay's off stump, he stays back and blocks down the track

Nannes to Dhoni, no run, full in length, on Dhoni's middle and leg stump, he defends to point

Nannes to Dhoni, OUT, GONE! Nannes has got Dhoni with a short ball and Chennai are reeling here! Nice bouncer from Nannes, Dhoni was not sure which way to move, got back late and played a wimp of a pull shot, which popped up easily for Manhas at square leg inside the circle. The experiment to move to three has back-fired. Captain gone for a duck

MS Dhoni c Manhas b Nannes 0 (2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Nannes to Raina, 1 run, superb yorker first up, Raina digs it out to the leg side and scampers across

Nannes to Vijay, no run, great lines again, at reasonable pace too, 141 kph, length outside Vijay's off stump, he defends it to the off side

Nannes to Vijay, 3 runs, the line is marginally off target this time, and it is enough for Vijay to time it away off the hips to midwicket. Good running gets three easily

Nannes to Raina, 1 run, length ball, angles in to Raina's leg stump, he rises on his toes and tucks it away to midwicket for one

Nehra to Raina, no run, ooh, short of a length and Raina plays it a little awkwardly, he was expecting a bouncer. Keeps it away it the end off the back foot

Nehra to Raina, 1 run, again short of a length, but sliding down to leg, Raina clips it down behind square

Nehra to Vijay, FOUR, intentional! Despite the presence of a slip, Vijay was looking to open the face of the bat outside off, the ball flew away off the meat, very fine to the third man fence

Nehra to Vijay, OUT, Bouncer does the trick once again for Delhi! And another good one too - Nehra got the line just outside off and the length perfect, Vijay was committed into the pull, without being in any position to execute it. The top edge loops up and lands in Dinesh Karthik's gloves. Chepauk is queit!

Yadav to Raina, no run, shortens the length and Raina plays it away more watchfully to the off side

Yadav to Raina, no run, straighter from Umesh, angling in from leg to middle, Raina gets into it and defends to the leg side

Yadav to Raina, no run, through him at good pace, 145.6 kph and short of a length, Raina attempts a meek swivel pull and misses

Yadav to Raina, 3 wides, serious pace, but too short. 143 odd kph and it takes off over Raina and Karthik

Yadav to Raina, no run, 140 kph this time, short and Raina picked it, but could not get the placement. Pulled straight to square leg

Yadav to Raina, FOUR, counter-punched in style! 146 kph at good pace and short of good length, Raina somehow muscled the pull over mid on and the ball reached the boundary in a trice. Hands, eyes and timing!

Nehra to Hussey, 3 runs, Hussey is away, full and drifts on to his pads and he works it away nicely. Good running

Nehra to Raina, no run, not much pace off Nehra's hand, but the pace off Raina's bat remains. Hit straight to cover off the back foot

Nehra to Raina, no run, straightens the line, and keeps the length short of driving range too. Raina defends down to Nehra

Nehra to Raina, no run, Raina backs away towards the leg side to create room through the off but cannot connect. Unnecessary ugly shot

Nehra to Raina, 1 run, slower ball, 113.8 kph short of a length outside off, Raina stays back and works it away with the wrists to mid on

Nehra to Hussey, 1 run, delicately done. Opens the face and deflects the short of length ball on off stump to third man to retain strike

Time out. Chennai need one desperately to recover from the body blows. Once again, Dhoni's move to number three backfires in this format. It happened in IPL 2008, IPL 2009 and even the World Twenty20 last year. Hmm.

Well, abject performance from the hosts. Their two most senior batsmen - Dhoni and Hayden - contributed one run between them, and things went pear-shaped in a hurry after that. Delhi swooped in for the kill with spinners of varying degrees of expertise, but all of them were effective today. Badri has taken Chennai past 100, but even on a turning track, it looks like a poor score. Join us for the chase in a bit.

Clarification: The on-field umpires made a counting error and Dirk Nannes had to bowl a seventh ball in the 19th over. We have not scored it, thankfully the ball yielded no run or wicket.
