Harbhajan Singh and Gautam Gambhir celebrate the fall of Alviro Petersen, South Africa v India, 1st Test, Centurion, 2nd day, December 17, 2010

Harbhajan Singh has been named captain of the Rest of India team for the Irani Cup to be played in Bangalore from February 9. Gautam Gambhir has also been included in the 15-man squad. The big name missing was that of Pragyan Ojha, who didn't get a game in South Africa and wasn't taken to New Zealand. However, he managed to play only one Ranji game during the season, which could be the reason why he wasn't picked.

Others who might consider themselves unlucky are Maharashtra batsman Harshad Khadiwale, Jharkhand's Saurabh Tiwary, Himachal Pradesh allrounder Rishi Dhawan and Railways wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat. Khadiwale is one of the three players to score 1000 runs in the tournament, but couldn't join his two Maharashtra team-mates, Kedar Jadhav and Ankit Bawne, in the squad. Tiwary scored 854 runs, including an impressive century in Mumbai, but lost out to - among others - Natraj Behera, who scored 584 runs. Rawat accumulated 820 runs in the season, but lost to Dinesh Karthik who made 401 runs.

Punjab's Jiwanjot Singh, who had a second good season, will be Gambhir's opening partner. Jadhav, Bawne, Baba Aparajith, Karthik, Natraj Behera and Mandeep Singh were the other batsmen in the squad. Parvez Rasool was the allrounder, while most of the highest wicket-takers in the Ranji season made it to the squad.

Pankaj Singh, who earlier in the season complained about his non-selection, got another chance to impress the selectors, with Varun Aaron, Anureet Singh and Ashok Dinda as other quicks.

Rest of India will face Karnataka, who won the Ranji Trophy beating Maharashtra in the final in Hyderabad.

Squad Harbhajan Singh (capt.), Jiwanjot Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Baba Aparajith, Kedar Jadhav, Ankit Bawne, Dinesh Karthik, Amit, Mishra, Pankaj Singh, Ashok Dinda, Varun Aaron, Parvez Rasool, Anureet Singh, Natraj Behera, Mandeep Singh

West Zone: Wasim Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Kedar Jadhav, Ankit Bawane, Ajinkya Nayar, Ravindre Jadeja, Parthiv Patel, Aditya Tare, Harshad Khadiwale, Samad Fallah, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Jawed Khan, Akshar Patel, Ambati Rayudu. This is the West Zone Squad. Duleep trophy which is played earlier than Ranji trophy should be slated back after Ranji trophy. So we can enjoy the clashes again, since lst 2 years Duleep trophy has lost its significance as it is played simultaneously with Champions Legaue. Duleep trophy is the more tougher competion than any Ranji tophy and BCCI should try to look after it.

India needs replacement for Ashwin and Ishant. Hopefully Pankaj Singh or Anureet Singh will perform here and replace Ishant from Indian squad. Hopefully Parvez Rasool will get selected and get a chance to replace Ashwin from Indian squad.

Posted by pratit on (February 5, 2014, 12:35 GMT)

Typically ignorant decision from the Indian selectors. When what India desperately needs is a seam bowling allrounder, you exclude the very player(Rishi Dhawan) who is most likely to make it. He was also the highest wicket taker in the Ranji. Would the selectors care to explain the logic behind the decision?

keep altarnate for ashwin.. he is tired

Posted by   on (February 5, 2014, 9:37 GMT)

realy everybody has ego.even if Dhoni..he don't want take senio player still young player struggling like ashwin raina ,m vijay.. shikhar, i think last 1 year only virat had played little dhoni rohit , no one else played for india. m vijay playing last more than 3 year but he is not getting 50 run also.. we don;t know why selector or dhoni taking like this list 2 senior player he can take.. Sehwag or ghambhir.they are match winner last one year dhoni lost all most match in abbrod because of ego not taking senior player...want to play with young player..Dhoni is good captain but don;t be too good

saurabh tiwary has been really unlucky here, he should be a genuine prospect for the indian ODI squad yet was not selected for behera, aparajith and mandeep singh. Behera has no future in in the indian team and was only selected for his 4 good innings (all the rest he completely failed). Aparajith is not going to be making the indian team any time soon as he is only 1 season old. Mandeep singh had a mediocre season at best averaging below 40. Tiwary only had one bad game all season and by that point jharkhand pretty much wanted to lose so they would go back to group C. Kedar jadhav and tiwary could be the new 4 and 5 for india in the next WC but it looks like tiwary will have to do well in the vijay hazare trophy to make the ODI squad for england, while this is jadhavs chance to make the asia cup squad. Also have to feel bad for rishi dhawan, this couldve been a chance to show how he performs against the best domestic team.

Posted by timepass2014 on (February 4, 2014, 14:25 GMT)

I hope Parvez Rasool gets picked in the eleven and not sidelined because the capt. is an offspinner too. Don't think Ashwin is doing the trick as an offspinner. So somebody should be pushing Ashwin for hsi place, as he is not doing his primary job i.e picking up wickets.

Posted by Shajahan.P on (February 4, 2014, 12:54 GMT)

Yes, As few saying Dinesh Karthik should be given chance. Because he deserve to be in Indian XI.

Sanju Samson should be included. He played most of the matches in his home ground against flat opposition in this season and this match would be good testing for him againstthe like of Vinay Kumar , A Mithun.

Posted by   on (February 4, 2014, 12:13 GMT)

Ashwin & Raina should sent back to play some local games they have forgetten their basics. Raina is in doubt everytime he faces shortball. Ashwin does not which line n length to be bowled on the fast seaming pitches. He would have learned something from Nathan Mccullam who bowled in the series with the average of 4 runs per over

Posted by Rik_Renegades on (February 4, 2014, 12:09 GMT)

Good Selection. But I think Gautam Gambhir should be given the captaincy.Rishi Dhawan is missing from the team, he is a fine all rounder and he proved it in the IPL for MI.Ad Why Dinesh Karthik Again?? He has been tested in International Level.Wht Not give chance to other WKs.lThe best Xi for ROI: Gambhir,Jiwanjot Singh, kedar jadhav,Ankit Bawne,Dinesh Karthik,Baba Aparajith,Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Varun Aaron,Dinda,Pankaj Singh.12 th man: Parvez Rassol.

Still no Laxmi Ratan Shukla? Incredible!!!

Posted by Naresh28 on (February 4, 2014, 10:37 GMT)

Sharaubh Tiwari seems to be a genuine ODI type player. His build, style of play and strike rate is high.I wont be surprised if he plays for India in WC.

Posted by anshu.s on (February 4, 2014, 10:20 GMT)

I throughout the domestic season always hear and read so many people discrediting someone's performances just because he played in Group C , let me inform all of you sceptics that apart from the notable exception of Tripura there are no weak teams in group C , with massive expansion of cricket in the smaller centres and with better coaching, funding, grassroot infrastructure teams like Jharkhand,Himachal,Andhra,Services,Kerala have become stronger , just check the amount of players theses states have sent to India,India A,u-19,IPL etc....Maharastra deservedly reached the final this year, Services did well last season,Jharkhand dominated Mumbai while HP before last 2 rounds were looking quite impressive.

Bhajji is the captain and Ojha is not even in the squad. His fault: he was touring with team India, which did not bother to pick him in the playing 11. This is baffling. I am not too sure if Irani trophy is clashing with Junior world cup, otherwise not selecting Vija Zol and Sanju Samson is another big mistake. I sincerely hope that Bhajji does nto get more than two wickets in any innings. Even if he gets something like a '3 for 50+' in one of the innings he will start talking of himself as the best spinner of all generations worlwide

Posted by   on (February 4, 2014, 7:10 GMT)

Exclusion of Rishi Dhawan from the ROI squad is as bad a decision as keeping Pujara out of the ODI team. Though the new selectors had been, by and large, doing an excellent job, some of these decisions are totally inexplicable.

Posted by atuljain1969 on (February 4, 2014, 7:02 GMT)

If somebody has been following my comments, I was crying to give genuine chances to RISHI DHAWAN, as he is one of the most promising players on the scene.

But I am at loss of words that he has been ignored time and again. This is India's loss.

We need Mr. Dilip Vengsarkar to induct talented players in the team. This present bunch of selectors are not doing justice to some of the consistently performing players.

Posted by SUHASAMBAKUDI on (February 4, 2014, 6:26 GMT)

where is Rishi Dhawan?? Selectors need a new pair of spectacles.

Posted by Al_Bundy1 on (February 4, 2014, 6:17 GMT)

For the sake of Indian cricket, we need to get rid of Ishant and Ashwin as soon as possible. Hopefully Pankaj Singh or Anureet Singh will do well in this match. I wanted to see Rishi Dhawan in action. For some strange reason, he was not selected. Hopefully Parvez Rasool will get a game and perform well. He has the talent to replace club level bowler Ashwin.

Posted by   on (February 4, 2014, 6:07 GMT)

@ Gaurab Shahi, You should n't always complain about the selection.

For instance Natraj Behera has scored 4 century in his 6-7 matches and have a decent average of 64...

We have already seen Saurav Tiwari Lets give chance to othet unknown faces to be grind in the national & International scenario..

Posted by   on (February 4, 2014, 6:05 GMT)

i think they should give one chance to virender sehwag a chance before his retirement

Posted by Kaka13 on (February 4, 2014, 5:48 GMT)

India in dire need of a good Fast Bowler allrounder and Rishi Dhawan fits and his performance speaks very loud about it, I don't what he needs to do get attention of our selectors. I wanted him in National team and not figuring in ROI team. Gautam should lead the team and I will not consider Harbhajan in the team forget about leading.

Posted by NAYANADINI on (February 4, 2014, 5:47 GMT)

Harbhajan is not a great spinner like he was in the last decade. I feel its a wasted slot. It would have been better is some youngster had been included. Also dont think he is a captain material. Srilanka has some raw talents. We dont have enough money to polish all those diamonds. Only those which shine by themselves manage to stay. But India too may have far more talents. But they naturally will be more focussed on t20 stuffs with the ipl creating a buzz. Its better to catch few u19 talents and polish them for test cricket. With so much money, bcci can definitely do it.

Posted by android_user on (February 4, 2014, 5:28 GMT)

I guess selectors r going by names not by performance, how can they sideline ranji trophy highest wicket taker rishi dhawan who is also a descent allrounder n a non performer like dinda who is a failure at international level also has been given chance .same is the case with batsman selection harshad khadiwale n saurabh tiwari who are 2nd n 3rd highest run scorer has been sidelined. Good to see selectors showing confidence in young talent jiwanjot , apraajit n aruneet. natraj behra was lucky to be selected in team n same is the case with mandeep as he didn't performed consistently this season.manpreet juneja would have been better option then mandeep. nadeem was also unlucky .

Posted by   on (February 4, 2014, 4:26 GMT)

i thnk is wrong selection ....were is shahbaz nadeem and saurabh tiwari???

Posted by leleraja on (February 4, 2014, 4:26 GMT)

I am quite appalled by Ashwin bashing. In the last few years almost all of the pitches outside the sub-continent have been tailored for fast bowling with limited assistance to spinners. I still believe Ashwin is a great utility cricketer for India.

Posted by Water_Bottle on (February 4, 2014, 4:25 GMT)

To those who are saying that what bhajji did to get selected in the ROI squad, just tell me what Ashwin is doing now to be repeatedly selected for national team??????? Just the politics of dhoni, thats it. Earlier selection was based on talent and people believed in cricket and worked hard.. Now its just politics.. hope, cricket will get better again after the retirement of Dhoni. Not sure whether cricinfo will publish this. Please

Posted by SachinRao on (February 4, 2014, 3:32 GMT)

Rishi Dhawans non selection is baffling to say the least considering how badly weneed a medium pace bowling all rounder.Other notable omissions are ojha/dabholkar, khadiwale, rawat and jalaj saxena. The most alarming aspect is we are still to unearth a brilliant spinner who can win us matches. Even an unconventional bowler for impact is missing. Where does lanka get so many of these?

Posted by azeemparayil on (February 4, 2014, 3:27 GMT)

atrocious decision to leave out rishi dhawan,V A jagadeesh, khadiwale performing players are not rewarded

Posted by   on (February 4, 2014, 2:22 GMT)

Well Dhawan should complain about not selecting him like Pankaj Singh. Pankaj has literally forced his way by being vociferous. You need to do such things at times.

Posted by android_user on (February 3, 2014, 18:54 GMT)

dk is good keeper but I feel only for next 2 years he will be considered. once MSD retired sanju Samson will fill in those shoes

Posted by Nero28 on (February 3, 2014, 18:31 GMT)

The guys who are saying about kartik's selection in india's home irani trophy, can they answer me why wriddhiman saha in the national squad. Is he a batsman, may be a part time bowler if not wicket keeper. But batsman! no. Then is he selected in the hope of he will win the match only with wicket keeping? Right about DK but he deserve atleast in iraani trophy when Saha is in newzealand

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 18:28 GMT)

The man who took Bengal to the semis all by himself, Laxmi Ratan Shukla couldn't find a spot!!! He is the most capable fast bowling all rounder in India at this moment.

Posted by ashok16 on (February 3, 2014, 18:26 GMT)

Selection continues to be one step forward, one backward. Why not just select 12 people with local players as fielding substitutes. Is this team based on Ranji selection or not? How were group C performances compared to Group A and B? Gambhir and Harbhajan were not amongst the top in Ranji and yet they were selected. If that is the case, why not Ojha? And there is always one TN player who is getting ahead merely through hype. First it was Abhinav Mukund, and now it seems to be Aparajith. Similarly if Aparajith can get in on U-19 skills, why not Vijay Zol?

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 18:22 GMT)

Atrocious from the selectors. No Rishi Dhawan? Seriously? And what has Dinesh Karthik, consistently inconsistent throughout the season done to deserve selection over Mahesh Rawat? Dinda is picked and no place for Sandeep Sharma? Good to see Pankaj Singh and Parwez Rasool in there though.

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 18:19 GMT)

@Ansuman pattanaik rasool is an overrated player ,just selected for his j&k connection .Cribbing about paucity of spinner will not help much if don't give ur domestic ace spinner a chance.

Posted by Nero28 on (February 3, 2014, 18:12 GMT)

How varun aaron and adam milne are medium fast . They bowl regularly at 145kph which is more than Steyn, junaid or coulter nile. They too should be right arm fast. The duo bowled several 150kph delivery in recent matches.

Posted by Hummingbird0 on (February 3, 2014, 18:07 GMT)

@Ansuman Pattanaik, "Rishi Dhawan but I am sure he will be under observation by the selectors". Observation about what? whether he will quit the game or continue the game or change the state to play in Group A or Group B?

After all, next year, he will be playing in the same HP and in the same Group C. Nobody will ever know, if he is good enough to play against top teams unless, HP progressed to higher group. And it is highly unlikely.

If selectors were really observing Rishi, he would've playing against Champions of Ranji. This was the chance for INDIA's only fast bowling all rounder besides Irfan Pathan to showcase his talent.

But now, he can't show his talent and he will be obscurity till he decides to give up. What is point of having this Group C teams, if none of the players can dream big?

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 17:25 GMT)

All the players are from A and B groups except Bawne, Jadav and Rasool. They are also selected because they performed well against the top teams either in QF or SF and Final. Khadiwale from maharashtra is not selected although he has scored more runs than Bawne because he didn't perform against top teams. That is also the reason for non-selection of Rishi Dhawan. But I am sure he will be under observation by the selectors. But I am too unhappy not to see Jalaj Saxena of MP not in this team. He is better batsman and bowler than Parvez Rasool, So he should have been selected. My team would have been Gautam gambhir, Natraj behera, Naman Ojha, Baba Aparajith, Kedar Jadav, Saurav Tiwary, Jalaj Saxena, Pankaj Singh, Anureet Singh, Ashok Dinda, Visha Dabholkar...12th man Parvez Rasool.....Bawne, Rawat, Aaron

best choice for captaincy but sandeep sharma not in squad surprises

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 16:45 GMT)

Unbeleivable that Pragyan Ojha, Mahesh Rawat and Saurabh Tiwary not there....if tiwary was not i9n the scheme of things then why he was made to debut two years back in a one day game...

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 16:43 GMT)

Poor Rishi Dhawan. May be, he has to take 100 wickets and score 1000 runs to get selected ! Should try him as an allrounder as India needs one badly.

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 16:40 GMT)

Karnataka has an edge only because they are playing as a cohesive unit and have a point to prove. The current selection should send warning signals to many of persons in the current squad. The message appears that the selection for the World Cup is not definite yet and there are still chances for those who can bend their back and prove a point or two. Pragyan Ojha's non - selection is also a strong pointer that the committee has considered Ranji performances while taking a decision. Rishi Dhawan may not have been chosen since he consistently bowled on seamer friendly tracks at places like Dharmashala and Mohali and they may have discounted the net effort. He however remains a strong contender for an all rounder's slot in the national team in near future

Posted by datewithdestiny on (February 3, 2014, 16:30 GMT)

All those who think Rishi Dhawan should have been selected, the reason he was not is probably that Rishi Dhawan got all his wickets in the 'C' division. This whole system of Ranji statistics is flawed because a group of teams are playing only relegated teams and making merry. Having said that, I still think he deserves a spot given he got considerably more wickets than any Karnataka bowler.

Posted by hnlns on (February 3, 2014, 16:23 GMT)

I cannot imagine the logic behind picking Harbhajan when Ashwin has proven himself to be ahead in the race for off-spinner by showing some decent enough batting capability, in addition to his bowling. I am not so sure Gambhir has done enough to merit selection either. If selectors want to see Irani Cup as a testing ground to find out how much fresh talent there is in domestic game, then that makes some sense because it will help unearth the hidden talent. If this game is used to give just another chance to already tested and consistently failing seniors, then God save Indian cricket.

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 16:01 GMT)

Harbajan, Gambhir, Amit Mishra and Dinesh Karthik in...all tested, tried and ignored!!!! and no Vijay Zol, Sanju Samson, Rishi Dhawan, Sourab Tiwary, etc all promising young legs ignored....this what I will definitely call a senseless selection....

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 16:00 GMT)

Hard to know highest Ranji wicket taker Dhawan is not there, what else a youngster has to do to prove... strange selections as always...

Posted by AamirKhan-SuperStar on (February 3, 2014, 15:42 GMT)

Ok now i understand why 15 players hv been selected, so that people dnt complain. I mean why do you want to select Parvez Rasul when captain Bhajji & Mishra will play ahead of him. Shouldn't they select 12 players along with a couple of local players for such matches. Someone complaining why V Zol is ignored, well he is leading India in a world cup thats why.

Posted by pull_shot on (February 3, 2014, 15:40 GMT)

The most important thing for indian cricket right now is to groom fast bowling all rounder but at this stage there r only 2 of them rishi dhawan, irfan pathan. Pathan lost his way and we left with rishi dhawan so i don't c any reason not in irani team leave alone in indian team

Posted by CricketMaan on (February 3, 2014, 15:34 GMT)

Why pick Amit Mishra when Dhoni has no confidence in him? why not try other leggies? Why pick Bhajji when Dhoni or Duncan won't play him in England or Aus? Will Parvez get a game ahead of Bhajji and Amit in the XI? Hard to imagine so why waste him in the team? If they are serious about Parvez to represent India, he should play ahead of Bhajji but its hard to imagine. Where is Fallah, wouldn't he add some variety to the bowling?

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 15:27 GMT)

Where is Laxmi Ratan Shukla , Arindam Ghosh ?????? where is Samad falah and Vijay Zol ? Really incredible team selection

Posted by cric_follower on (February 3, 2014, 15:14 GMT)

How does Saurabh Tiwary miss out? What more does a cricket need to do? One would have thought he would playing in New Zealand instead of some of the paper tigers. Now he is not even in the Rest of India squad. What have Gambhir and Karthik achieved?

Posted by android_user on (February 3, 2014, 15:10 GMT)

you've gotta be kidding me? can somebody explain why rishi dhawan wasn't picked? and if this squad is based purely on ranji trophy performances then can somebody for heaven s sake explain what bhajji s doing in the squad?

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 15:08 GMT)

The best all-rounder of the season isn't in the team- Rishi Dhawan. Can I apply for the position of a selector, since there can't possibly be a sane criterion for the position.

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 15:08 GMT)

Another time Ojha is not selected.Because they know Ojha will perform better & it may close the door for unsucessful overrated player. While Ojha is under rated & always sucessful whenever he got chance to play.

Posted by android_user on (February 3, 2014, 15:07 GMT)

could this be the game where harbajhan performs and takes over the indian captaincy as dohni has shown how good he is when the team travels abroad let the real singh sardar of punjab take over then jatt will play attacking cricket let him pick his own team and i bet his team will perform better than the current one

Its disheartening to see Rishi Dawan not being picked. He is one of the finds of this seasons who not just has an batting average of 40 odd that to mostly batting with the tale but also topping the wickets column with 49 scalps this season. He certainly seams to be India's find for genuine fasting bowling allrounder .He can swing the bowl both ways at over 135 kms/hr speed and a more than handy lower order batsmen . what more does he have to prove to impress the selectors? And don't understand the selection of Dinesh karthik .He is a tried and failed output, has had more then half a dozen chances in the international arena but in vain.Instead guys like Sanju Samson but be considered for the "Call of Duty".Not backing guys like Rishi Dawan and Ojha(he has proved himself consistently) would demoralize their self esteem and could possible kill their hunger to perform.Hope selectors make some sensible decisions in future.

This is the match guys......Karnataka should show its class.....with Binny returning to the squad....this is the thriller of a match......will go to B'lore for this match.

come on selectors, why rishi dhawan is being neglected... he is clearly our next kapil, he is too good with ball, and good with bat also... bajji and gambir again?? i thought we are done with them...

Posted by realfan on (February 3, 2014, 14:22 GMT)

no rishi dhawaan???? lol ... he is the most wicket taker and the best allrounder currently.... if he doesnt play in irani tropy , then when can we see him??? i really hope pankaj will get a game and make it count, he is real deal... he has increased his pace, that confirms that he is not the one who is going to comproise on pace, he is well built, he is experienced, he is humble, hoep selectors see him closely, pankaj sing, umesh, ishawar pandey, shami, varu aaron, bhuvi, rishi dhawan, sharath should be in the radar of the selection comittee...

really hope rishi dhawan is picked for future... we need a fast bowling allrounder for overseas tours...

Posted by BK05 on (February 3, 2014, 14:20 GMT)

I think it is a very good team . The selector has taken a good step during the selection by not seeing the face of the cricketer but they choose for the performance basis during the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 not for the old record . As per the selection of Natraj Behera's selection , it is very good selection by the selector , he has 4 back to back century against the most powerful team in this Ranji season . Just take a look to his performance , he had just played 6 matches & scored 584 average 64.88 with 4 brilliant century's against the quality team. which is not bad at all. As per selection of Manoj Tiwary's selection , I think he did not play any match in the Ranji Trophy 2013-14, So how could he will select. Rishi Dhawan should be taken in this squad , he might be get chance in near future for any other match. Over all good team selection.

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 14:09 GMT)

IF I have to name one player in this Ranji trophy who single handedly carried his team that has to be LR Shukla. He scored runs against Saurashtra,Railways, UP, again Railways and Tamil Nadu which steered his team either to vicotry or first innings lead or avoi defeat. All the innings barring TN were in grren tops and TN was a square turner and in all the innings Bengal were in the range of loosing 5 wickets for 40 runs. If he was not there Bengal would have been reegated this yesr. His captaicy was outstanding and he picked crucial wickets and was brilliant in the field. Why is he not considered???This IS REALLY BAFFLINF.

Hope this means both Bhajji and Gambhir are back in the reckoning. Both are still young and have far too much pedigree to be cast aside. If they are not in the reckoning then it is a missed opportunity for other aspiring youngsters. By the way, it beggars belief that Rayudu was selected over Dinesh Karthik for the NZ tour. Especially for the ODI's!

This selection baffles me! Rishi D definitely deserves a chance here. Yuvraj is another candidate who must be given chance to play domestic matches before getting back to national duties. Not quite followed Natraj Behera in domestic competition so his selection came to me as surprise! Looking forward to see fit Manoj Tiwary and Irfan Pathan to become available for hefty competition.

Crazy people KL Rahul plays for Karnataka so he can't play for both teams.

Very poor selection panel : Please see the record of Rishi Dhawan , he performed almost in all the matches either with ball or bat . I will say he is our Jack Kallis and still not in the team .

Posted by anshu.s on (February 3, 2014, 12:35 GMT)

Very surprised to see Rishi Dhawan and Saurabh Tiwary not there, Oaky there are many here who have and will cast there displeasure about Rishi's non inclusion , so i will put my focus on Saurabh Tiwary, firstly Saurabh was a victim of his million dollar tag at IPL and his subsequent poor performances at RCB did not help but in last two seasons he has consistently made runs in Ranji trophy for Jharkhand and that too on challenging wickets where others struggled , he might look ungainly but he is mighty effective. Please don't blame likes of R.Dhawan and S.Tiwary focussing there energies on IPL when selectors ignore there performances and fail to suitably reward them .However i disagree with the article on Harshad Khadiwale as he has been exposed by good quality short pitch bowling .I more or less agree with the rest of squad except Natraj Behra who with all due respect to him does not merit it.

no Rishi Dhawan and Ojha??this is cruel...after long years ranji produced a balling all rounder and all selectors doing is killing that guys cofidence, what should he do more to get selected???Binny selected ahead of him in he tour of NZ and now this...disappointing to see as a indian fan..there is no way bajji gonna return to indian chance at all..with jaddu balling, batting and feilding will and considering indians wil play most of there games abroad chances of a 4th spinner getting selected in very rare...instead of tryd and tested bajji..poor ojha must have been given chance..poor guy..the last international game he played he got 10 wicket in a match..and he is already 28..and Mandeep ahead of Harshad Khadiwale..bunch of Confidence killers as selector..god..

big time for bhajji and gambhir good luck to both

Rishi Dhawan & J&K fast bowlers needed to be tried out. thats the need of the hour.No point trying Pankaj Singh..

Selection of Rayudu ahead of other talented players still baffles me. He averages only 45 in flat tracks of India in FC whereas players like , Manoj Tiwary (60), Bawane (55)Nayar (54), Jadhav (52), Manish Pandey (54), Badrinath (60), Aparjith (55) are way superior than him. (There are plethora of other 50+avgs in Indian FC)

Some may argue that its the temperament, but again, Ankit Bawane , Manish Pandey , Jadhav are more superior in terms of that also.

Other hard-digesting fact is despite averaging 35 in List A matches how come he was selected for ODI's? Is Ipl is the real way of entry to Indian team?

People complaining about the non-selection of Rahul, please note that this is Irani Cup (Karnataka vs Rest of India). Rahul can't play for both teams!! However, Rishi Dhawan not getting a place is just unfair. There are two spin-bowling all-rounders in Rasool and Aparajith (three, if you count Harbhajan). Dhawan would gave given that much-needed balance to this team.

Another time Ojha is not selected.Because they know Ojha will perform better & it may close the door for unsucessful overrated plaeyer. While Ojha is under rated & always sucessful whenever he got chance to play.

Very happy to see pankaj singh. Hope this is clear indication that selectors are considering him for national duty.

Manvinder Singh: Look at Ashwin's poor show of late; that in itself is enough to provide Bhajji with another chance. I dont think Bhajji was this bad (as Ashwin has been) at any stage of his career. Since the start of the South Africa tour, Ashwin has 1 international wicket to his name. Enough said!

i hope that harbhajan and gambhir performs well and comeback in the indian team. these two should replace ashwin and dhawan. dhawan could score only on flat pitches and ashwin doesn't have the ability to take wickets overseas.

Where are KL Rahul and Rishi Dhawan ?? India definitely needs an solid opener and a seam bowling all rounder. Rahul and Dhawan fit brilliantly in respective roles and both have proved that by their brilliant performances this year in Ranji Trophy. Is this selection really on merit and to help find talented players for national team or just a routine exercise just for the sake of doing it.

Posted by muthukumar.velusamy on (February 3, 2014, 11:11 GMT)

Poor Selection. Rishi Dhawan is the highest wicket taker in this Ranji Trophy but not included in ROI Squad. When India is searching for Fast bowling All-rounder everyone knows he is the potential Player who can fill that All-rounder role. Even if you go and ask England or Australian selector they will tell you that he is there. Are our Selectors living in another Planet? Earlier we saw Dhoni never changed playing XI much inspite of continuous failures by some of his favorite Players. Amit Misra & Ishwer Pandey never got chance to play when all our bowlers struggled to take wickets and even struggled to contain flow of runs. Think BCCI & Indian cricket Crews taking Fans for granted & hoping fans will watch Cricket with any team they selects.

Shame on the selectors for not having Rishi Dhawan. He has been the best all rounder this season. We need to promote all rounders like this or India will never have a good all rounder.

What has Harbhajan done to warrant a place in this squad this season? Dhawan was the highest wickettaker this season. One cannot belittle group C teams having seen Maharashtra this year, which played in group c last year. Would have loved to see some J&K pacers too as subbuamdavadi says..

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 11:07 GMT)

Think Gambhir should have been the captain for this team.

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 11:05 GMT)

Good chance for harbhajan & gambhir to make a final come back. Gambhir is unlucky not to be a part of test team in NZL otherwise he might be playing instead of struggling dhawan. Jadeja seems to be the first choice as overseas spinner, rest of the players will be same. May be guys like parvez rasool can impress selectors.

Happy to see Pankaj Singh....hope he makes the opportunity count !!!

NO rishi dhawan?????????????????

Posted by   on (February 3, 2014, 10:49 GMT)

Atleast bring one bowler of speed 150+ ..bring from pakistan ok but bring it now

Posted by subbuamdavadi on (February 3, 2014, 10:49 GMT)

No Rishi Dhawan? Definitely deserved a place as did a few of the fast bowlers from J&K. Should have been a good test for them and the selectors would have got a second look at their potential.
