Karnataka quick bowler Vinay Kumar continued his strong recent form with a six-for to bundle Rest of India out for 201. ROI would have been shot out for even less if not for Dinesh Karthik, who made the most of an early reprieve to score 91 in an innings where only two of the top six reached double-figures.

After Karnataka chose to bowl, Vinay struck on the first ball of the match on a greenish Chinnaswamy Stadium track, getting Jiwanjot Singh lbw in front of off. In his next over, Vinay removed another promising young batsman lbw, this time it was B Aparajith who fell to an incutter. In his third over, Vinay got his third wicket when the highest run-getter of the Ranji season, Maharashtra's Kedar Jadhav, was struck on the back leg, though the ball seemed to be heading over the stumps.

The trend of a wicket in each of his overs should have continued in Vinay's fourth, but Karthik was adjudged not out though he had clearly nicked the ball through to the wicketkeeper. At one stage in his first spell, Vinay had figures of 5-2-6-3.

Two of the most experienced batsmen in the match, Gautam Gambhir and Karthik, then prevented further damage by batting out 19 overs, putting on 42 runs. Stuart Binny, returning to the Karnataka side after a stint with the national team, was getting the ball to jag around, and he broke through by getting the fourth lbw of the innings, with Gambhir a bit unlucky to be given out though the ball might have missed leg stump. Things got worse for ROI as Mandeep Singh edged to slip, bringing Amit Mishra in even before lunch.

At No. 7, Mishra might have been batting a position higher than you would expect, but he was the first batsman to show some enterprise in the innings, taking on the bowlers with some cavalier swinging. He clouted seven fours and a six in a rapid 47 as he overtook an unusually cautious Karthik. With the half-century in sight, however, his innings came to an end, caught at slip off fast bowler HS Sharath, who was making his comeback after missing the semi-finals and final with an injury.

Karthik has built a reputation as someone who can thrive on difficult tracks on the domestic circuit and he showcased that today as well by working through the initial tough phase, before slowly finding his groove. By tea, he was looking fluent, picking off boundaries with ease, including three in an over from Abhimanyu Mithun.

Just when a century seemed to be there for the taking, he fell to one of the catches of the season: a full-blooded slog-sweep rocketed towards mid-on where Robin Uthappa threw himself to his left to pluck a full-stretch catch to send back Karthik. Vinay returned to polish off the tail, and ROI had lost their final four wickets for two runs.

There was something to celebrate for ROI before stumps as Robin Uthappa edged to slips to fall for a duck. KL Rahul then showed off some of the crisp drives that took him to 1000-plus runs in the Ranji season, and shepherded Karnataka to 35 for 1 before stumps.

Leggie @ Agree that Vinay does not have pace & bounce. Which Indian bowler has pace & bounce? Shami & Varon having more pace & bounce than Vinay got hit all over the park in recent NZ series. Ishant is bowling at 126-128k. Shami is slowly coming down to 135k from his initial 140k. Senior Pro Zaheer does not cross 128K. Bhuvanesh is at 130K. India does not have fast bowlers clocking 145k consistently. Vinay gets wickets regularly with his variations and excellent length. Wickets help the team in putting pressure and also winning. In the current match, Vinay must have had little advantage in bowling on first day. But all the three fast bowlers - Dinda, Pankaj and Anureet are supposed to be having more pace & bounce than Vinay. What is the score today? Karnataka 390/5 with a healthy run rate of 4.00. Vinay is good for T20 & One day. He gives runs but takes wickets. Who does not give runs in the current bowling line up?

What does this say about India's batting talent pipeline when in its most prestigious competition, ostensibly featuring its top talent, 2 mediocre bowlers such as Vinay Kumar and Stuart Binny can run through a side for vritually nothing. I hope this doesnt mean that the national selectors are going to bring them back in.

Posted by   on (February 10, 2014, 11:55 GMT)

Vinay bowls to his strengths. He thinks and bowls much like Venkatesh Prasad before him. He would be plenty in Bangladesh during the World Cup. Stuart Binny's knock was absolutely class today. ROI bowling was extremely pedestrian through the day. The line and length was pathetic. They did not obviously see Vinay and Binny bowl on the first day. The only over Pankaj bowled to a good length, he got Karun Nair's wicket. Rahul, Karun, Gautham, Gopal, Pankaj Singh, Rishi Dhawan and others are extremely wonderful talent, that needs nurturing. They must be given exposure on South African, Australian and English wickets without any spotlight on them before they are drafted into the national side. It is harder to retain sanity in a hostile environment, when a billion countrymen are eager to declare you a failure.

Must say Pankaj Singh has been impressive in this game and all season too.Hopefully he'll get the nod for Test team for England. His height would also help to extract some extra bounce.Since the England series would be 5 Tests so enough bench support would be required for the likes of Zaheer. Rishi Dhawan would have been a much better choice than the other two pacers Anureet/Dinda in this game based on his season performance.Hopefully the selectors are thinking different from Dhoni's casual approach of giving chance to no new guys and locking World cup team for any new entrant.

karnataka team is having best batting and bowling line up with young players.this team is more stornger than indian squad selectors pls look at karnataka team

Posted by   on (February 10, 2014, 9:28 GMT)

definitely , karnataka players will play more in indian national teams . large talents emerging . i am sure that kl Rahul and Karun Nair will surely play . as dey both are technically too strong .

@Shivin, insanity is the doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Team BCCI will be 11-0 going to England, hopefully not under Capt Cool. Absolutely anybody else at the helm has more chance of winning. Vinay has shown more leadership than anybody else - and he's a handy bowler to back up Ishant, Pandey, Yadav. Capt Cool is burnt toast.

poor display by Karthik by not walking

Posted by Leggie on (February 10, 2014, 8:55 GMT)

Let's not go overboard about Vinay's performance. True that he had a good performance and bowled with a lot of heart - not just in this match but through out the Ranji season. He's also a bowler who has got all the basics right and surprisingly has shown wonderful leadership qualities - a fine example being bringing in Manish Pandey against Amit Mishra. HOWEVER, Vinay does seem to have limitations in terms of pace, bounce and the ability to move the ball consistently on conditions that are not so conducive for fast bowling. This first day wicket at Chinnaswamy Stadium was green with lots to offer for the bowlers. Bowlers with the pace of Stuart Binny were made to look good too. Vinay is not getting any younger and investing in him for the future may not be the best course of action.

Hats off to Karthik for digging in, Vinay bowled well. Leaves me amazed when the HUGELY talented Rohit gets chance pe chance and guys like karthik does not even get a look in... I am sure the same treatment will be meted out to Ajinkya and Ambatti..... but again, Hugely talented Rohit will get look in again and again and again!!!!!.... Thanks to Ravi Shastri for promoting this HUGELY talented chap.... Pragyan !! GOOD BYE for ever.,... You are never in scheme of things, as far as DHONI is concerned...

Karnataka !!!!!way to go!!!!!!!!!!

Send Karnataka team to NZ for 2nd test. They will show our National team how to win a test!!!

Did someone really say bring Vijay Kumar in as Test captain? When was the last time you really thought before saying something? Insanity at it's peak!

Posted by deepakbsg on (February 10, 2014, 5:30 GMT)

Vinay is bowls to his limitations in longer form and should be given chance to play for tests... He surely cant do anything in shorter form, but guys don't take away wht he has achieved in longer format.. I would prefer him to ishanth in tests... has showed he can be consistent and swings both ways...

Posted by   on (February 10, 2014, 4:30 GMT)

Drop Capt Cool for the England tests this summer. Bring in Vinay as test captain, Karthik as keeper-batsman, play 4+1 bowlers and team BCCI has some chance of winning abroad. Capt Cool has no chance of averaging more than 20 in tests in England. I saw him bat live in 2011 and he was awful - a fast bowlers wet dream.

Posted by Farce-Follower on (February 10, 2014, 4:29 GMT)

A lot of misinformed comments freely floating. Stuart Binny is a genuine talent. He got Gambhir's wicket by playing on the batsman's weakness. Gambhir is not fit even to open for Delhi - continuously falls across the stumps to be a LBW bunny. As for Vinay, he will be the first to admit that Karnataka wins because it plays as a team and not as a bunch of egotistical prima donnas. Karnataka will trounce RoI. And rightly Vinay should get a lot of credit for that. But the immature and ill-informed comments would continue. Sigh.

Vinay Kumar deserves to be in Indian Team!

Posted by whippingBails on (February 10, 2014, 0:11 GMT)

It is amazing to see all naysayers eating dirt on Vinay. Even the most skeptic has to give it to Vinay for trying hard and improving. He has become a much better bowler than he was before. He is constantly learning and is complete team man. When given the right opportunity and under right captaincy Vinay can and will do wonders for any team including India. He surely wears his heart on his sleeve. Ghambir shows he is still not ready for green tops. Time to give Sehwag one more chance. He needs a big stage to play big. Hope he is getting fitter.

Posted by bobpeecee on (February 10, 2014, 0:00 GMT)

Tells you a lot about the quality of the batters if Binny got 3 wickets, let alone Vinay getting 6. Papa Binny being selector earned chotu Binny an ODI cap and that's where it will end.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2014, 20:31 GMT)

Lack of bowling & fielding was not an excuse to exclude Murali Vijay from a batting line-up that is overloaded with batsmen, but lack of batting & fielding is an excuse to exclude Pankaj Singh....Rubbish. Pankaj's problem - he plays for Rajasthan....and worse, represents RR, not CSK. TN, Delhi, Karnataka, Mumbai are the sides to be in (if you want to represent India).

Posted by   on (February 9, 2014, 19:40 GMT)

Vinay Kumar is inexplicably so vastly different in international fixtures! Its futile to take 6 wickets here and get smashed around when given a chance at the top level... Karthik was given a raw deal and i hope he gets a decent run in atleast the ODIs before the WC... KL Rahul looks a good prospect and if he scores big in the next season, he'll definitely come into the reckoning... Still feel that there's a big gulf between domestic and international performances from these players...

Posted by JRP100 on (February 9, 2014, 18:42 GMT)

people backing vinay, hes 29 with an average of 37 after plenty of ODI opportunities, nothing but a domestic wonder (and trundler) and should have no future in the team, he should stick to ranji and IPL. The selections are starting to backfire for ROI, saurabh tiwary shouldve been there because unlike aparajith he plays well on green tracks. Mandeep singh had a mediocre season at best so im surprised he even made the 15 man squad... shouldve played ankit bawne in his place. Looks like DK will make a return for the asia cup and hopefully replace the struggling rahane in ODI's. Also good to see Rahul make a decent start hope he performs well tomorrow. Theres just one spot up for grabs in the indian odi 11 (if karthik gets the number 4 slot) and thats the number 5 batsman spot. As no one else impressed for ROI it looks like manish pandey is the only one with a shot of making the asia cup squad from this game (unless jadhav pulls some second innings heroics)

Posted by Mr_Anonymous on (February 9, 2014, 18:35 GMT)

It is good that Vinay Kumar is in good bowling form. ROI had a good batting line-up and to take 6-47 is a very good achievement. Congratulations! I don't think the seamers for WC 2015 are finalized and if Vinay is in good form, it will help the team by having more choices for selection. Let's see if someone from ROI (Dinda, Pankaj Singh, Mishra, Anureet or Bhajji) can put their hand up and provide a suitable response to make the game even on the 2nd day. At the end of the first day, it does seem like Advantage Karnataka.

Posted by barryrichardsfan on (February 9, 2014, 18:35 GMT)

One of the commentators, an ex-selector, cited Pankaj Singh's lack of batting and fielding skills for his non-selection, while comparing him to Vinay Kumar. Now that folks is some logic as if picking 20 wickets of opposition is a secondary objective. Hats off for the reasoning. Why did he play only one ODI? Vinay has not set world on fire in his 30 odd ODIs, has he? Ishant Sharma can play 50 test matches and Pankaj gets discarded after one ODI! Was he not worth trying more??

@nero : Vinay or any bowler cannot commit not to leak excess runs .. runs are because of dropped catches and poor fieldings and pitch conditions as well ; He is medium Pacer bowler can swing ball both ways and pretty accurate thats why he is getting so many wickets... you may not like or not ..6 wickets in national level IRANI trophy is not a easy task and wickets are all LBW or Bowled it means purely bowling effort ; Also if you check your Cricketing GYAN the captain Dhoni has more confidence in VINAY -- if you think you can much bigger than dhoni they you can comment against complimenting effort day;

On top of all INDIAN pitches and present cricket rules are not fast bowler frinedly in any repects.. FYI Test cricket is not just about runs --it does mean who takes 20 wickets -rgds Ram

Posted by Army_rangers on (February 9, 2014, 17:02 GMT)

@nero28 according to u after one bad performance he shouldnt be selected for ever..then how come ishanth and ashwin r still in the team??lets forget these guys if that was the case then broad wouldnt have become successfull bowler if he had been dropped after yuvraj's assault..everyone will have an offday but that doesnt mean they should be dropped forever..

Posted by RajeshNaik on (February 9, 2014, 16:48 GMT)

It is disappointing to read some comments here, which express anxiety over supposed selection of Vinay in to Indian team because of his performance in Irani trophy. Even when he picked up 5 wickets in that match changing spell against Punjab in Ranji Trophy SF, there were some comments similar to one expressed here. One should enjoy his lovely bowling in these matches and appreciate his performance and leadership skills in the context of the matches played. And moreover, he may have leaked tons of runs in the ODIs. But India never lost even a single ODI because of his bowling. Even in that match where he gave 100+ runs, India won. He bowls to take wickets, not to contain runs and show off better economy. Knowing what a team man he is, he would not mind giving away 100 runs every time, if India are to win. We should enjoy and appreciate this man's spirit and performance and leadership skills and not put on display our petty minds by ridiculing such a fine cricketer.

Oh god please don't make selector's bringing Vinay again. I can still remember his maiden odi century with the ball in 9 over against australia. His wicketless face in helpful Perth pitch. Medium pacers like him are butchered in international cricket. Their performance in home season look good because india's home batsmans don't attack their slow short balls. But when they come to international their lack of control of length exposes out. I can happily agree with his new ball swing only if india play four quick such that captain can bowl another if leaks run. It seems impossible because despite of all failures india have some faster and better swing bowler than him who's pace suit's not only in home season but also in international. Vinay supporters, never forget his odi century with the ball against aussie.

@RajeshNaik, @American.Cricketer the answer for both of you is that it is captained by a Punjabi offspinner. Rasool has had a better batting record than Mandeep this season. Then why not play him as batsman instead of Mandeep, if not him Bawne could've been played.

Posted by   on (February 9, 2014, 15:22 GMT)

Shame on bhajji ,plays anureeth singh instead of varun aaron.. And plays ony 6batsman very worse decision. Dk should come back and play for 4 for india at Odi's..

Posted by American.Cricketer on (February 9, 2014, 15:18 GMT)

What's the purpose of adding Pervez Rasool to the squad if he is not going to get a game ahead of Harbhajan and Amit Mishra? Both of them have been playing for ages now, haven't done anything worthy in the recent past. Then why not give Rasool a chance to further his credentials.

Posted by Savvy-Cricket-Analyst on (February 9, 2014, 15:10 GMT)

Once again, I am flabbergasted to find that this year's highest wickets-taker in Ranji matches - Rishi Dhawan, has not been selected as a member of 'Rest of India' team. This all rounder needs to be given opportunities and encouraged, as India badly needs a fast-bowling all-rounder in the mould of Irfan Pathan, Kapil Dev & Manoj Prabhakar.

Posted by RajeshNaik on (February 9, 2014, 14:56 GMT)

I was surprised to see Mandeep Singh in the ROI XI, instead of Ankit Bawne. Did not understand the basis on which this decision was made.
