Karnataka ended their golden first-class season with their eighth outright win in nine matches with Vinay Kumar registering his fourth first-class 10-wicket haul on his 30th birthday, and legspinner Shreyas Gopal delivering Karnataka's eighth first-class hat-trick to run through the tail. In the process, Karnataka became the first Ranji champion side to win the Irani Cup in the last nine seasons.

The win for Karnataka was imminent with a huge first-innings lead to their credit and only seven wickets left to take, but they will be pleased with the hurry it came with. Vinay and Abhimanyu Mithun began the morning with long spells. Vinay bowled nine overs on the trot for 43 runs and picked up the crucial wickets of overnight batsman Dinesh Karthik and then Mandeep Singh. Both batsmen fell to what looked like outswingers, but seamed and skidded after pitching. Karthik was bowled while Mandeep caught in front. Amit Mishra, whom CM Gautam dropped on nought, soon ran himself out, and it was all Shryeas after that.

Harbhajan Singh holed out to mid-on, half-centurion Baba Aparajith ran out of partners and found long-off looking for quick runs. The next two balls were wrong'uns that went through the big bat-pad gap provided by Ashok Dinda and Pankaj Singh. Pankaj's wicket also marked the end of the match, and loud cheering among the 50 or so spectators that turned up.

Vinay, who became the third Karnataka captain to have won both Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup as a Karnataka captain, said the win was a great birthday gift from his team to him. "It's a great feeling," he said, "We have been waiting for 15 years as a team, and I have been waiting for 10 years as a player to play for Karnataka in the Irani Cup. It's been a great performance by the team. Everyone who got a chance to play has performed well, and it's been a great experience to lead such wonderful bunch of players."

Vinay was also full of praise for J Arun Kumar and Mansoor Ali Khan, the batting and bowling coaches of the side. "They have been both part of Ranji- and Irani-winning squads, and they used to tell us about the feeling of being double champions. They instilled the feeling of togetherness, and they were more of friends than coaches. It was a pleasure to have them around and work with them."

Congratulations to Karnataka - they are winning as this is the only team that is playing as a team....all other teams have performers who are more interested in their own glory and with a single objective of making it to the selection lists for India A, U25, etc.....I think we should have this Karnataka team of 15 represent India for atleast a year now, so that all the so-called 'big names' can come back to the domestic circuit and see how they fare now!!

Excellent Karnataka!!!!!

This is not first nor would be last time ill treatment for Karnataka cricketers. All have suffered some time or other. It is only during Pataudi,Bedi, Azhar and Ganguli's time that the state players got their due. During Pataudi's time the South Zone team loaded with Karnataka cricketers almost beat Bill Lawrie's Australian team at a ground less than 2 kms away from present KSCA stadium. Some vested interests just cannot digest the quality of Karnataka players. I am sure this Karnataka team can perform credibly not only against ROI but against Dhoni's India team too. THIS IS A CHALLENGE!

Congrats Boys from nursery of Indian Cricket though powers to be differ. Consistency is the hall mark of this team includes terrific backing from support staff.Hope many will represent India in near future main obstacle is Cap MSD who in his capacity of VP of Indian Cements has preferences as well his memory in not short vis-a-vis Mysore soaps controversy. Mudgal Report is there hope that will breathe in fresh and clean cricket. All the best boys do not rest on ur laurels raise the performance bar .Kannadamgalge

A Beauty from Karnataka Boys!!! Things in Qn: 1. Is it the largest win ever in Irani trophy? (innings and 222 runs)??? 2. ROI team looked like a weakest team to make less than 2/3rd of Karnataka's single innings score in their both innings combined 3. Who will be the visiting international team to play against? 4. @BCCI - wake up and make Indian team strong with some of these players!! 5. @Cricinfo - pls consider giving importance to domestic contests by posting some pics!

Yes Congrats to Vinay. He has managed to do what many greater names before him have tried and failed. For the Cricketer these achievements mean a lot. It used to mean a lot to the selectors also, but alas no more. Else how can they keep persisting with a bowler like Ishant who has averaged in the 50s over the last 2-3 years and keep ignoring some really good Ranji performances by a host of many bowlers? Well not just tests - why not for the RCB? Where is the local flavour? As regards his touring - Someone else made a mention that Vinay cannot perform in away conditions. Give the man (Vinay) a break and dont make dubious statements. Cripes, he has played only one test so far and that too 12 overs in Australia where the so called good to look at giant bowler Ishant also got smashed for an average of 90!! Following that Vinay performed better than all other bowlers in T20 series there. So it is time to judge on performance and not appearances.

Agree with kri_push

Thanks to Dhoni for keeping Kar players out so that Kar can win local matches and make us feel proud.

Instead, let him chose CSK backed players and keep losing..... feel sad as an Indian, but feel unhappy for chosing wrong talent to perform at top level.

How better is Mohit sharma and Ishwar than the inform Vinay??

Congrats to KAR on winning the double crowns!! Keep it going for next seasons as well!

This season's performance is one of the most dominating one in the Ranji season of last 15 - 20 years. No team has performed the way Karnataka team performed this season. Lot of credit must be given to this young side. JAK, MAK and Vinay deserves full credit. Star Sports not showing the award ceremony is unpardonable.
