The Big Picture

On the face of it this series of three Twenty20s may seem trivial, but it is a significant contest for both sides as they use the games as preparation for the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. Although conditions in Stormont will not bear any resemblance to Colombo.

Ireland, desperate for more cricket against Full Members, get a chance to showcase their talent against a team they, one day, want to follow into the top flight of the international game. For Bangladesh it is a chance for their players to gain more experience away from home, but for their credibility as a Full Member it is not a series they can afford to lose. They are the team starting under the most pressure.

Ireland, in home conditions, have every right to begin this series with the belief they can win. Their side is packed full of experienced county cricketers such as Ed Joyce, Niall O'Brien, Tim Murtagh and the captain William Porterfield. The return of Boyd Rankin, the fast bowler, makes for a very strong seam attack.

Bangladesh have brought their big-name players which confirms how importantly they are treating the series. Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan are impressive international cricketers who have experience of county cricket that will serve them well in conditions likely to help the bowlers.

The Test series across the water in England will capture most of cricket attention this week but keep an eye on this battle, too.

Watch out for...

Paul Stirling has said he is firmly committed to Ireland and will not be enticed by an England call, but if he continues to perform the way he has that loyalty may soon be tested for real. A hard-hitter at the top of the order he has the ability to take an attack apart - as shown with his 17-ball fifty against Afghanistan in the World Twenty20 Qualifiers - and has an international T20 strike-rate of 123. His offspin is a more-than-useful second string.

Tamim Iqbal can be one of the most fearsome strikers of a cricket ball in the world, but his T20 average is a very modest 13.60 (and a strike-rate of under a hundred), compared to his Test figure of 38.00 and ODI number of 30.07. On Bangladesh's tour to England in 2010 he lit up the Test matches with back-to-back hundreds and he needs to show he is one of the team's senior batsmen in the shortest format.

Ireland William Porterfield (captain), Alex Cusack, George Dockrell, Trent Johnston, Ed Joyce, John Mooney, Tim Murtagh, Kevin O'Brien, Niall O'Brien, Andrew Poynter, Boyd Rankin, Max Sorensen, Paul Stirling, Andrew White, Gary Wilson

Bangladesh Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Ashraful, Junaid Siddique, Jahurul Islam, Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Ziaur Rahman, Elias Sunny, Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shafiul Islam, Nazmul Hossain, Abul Hasan.

Pitch and conditions

All the wet weather of recent weeks (and months) means it is unlikely that the pitches will have any great pace. Bangladesh won't mind if Boyd Rankin is not pinging the ball at their chests. The forecast for Wednesday is promising but further ahead there is less certainty.

Stats and trivia

  • The only other meeting between the two teams at T20 level came at the 2009 World Twenty20 in England when Ireland won at Trent Bridge by chasing down 137 to move into the Super Eights

  • Stirling's 79 against Afghanistan in the final of the World Twenty20 Qualifiers was Ireland's highest individual T20 score

  • Bangladesh have played just two T20 internationals since the previous World Twenty20 in the Caribbean

bangladesh team is going batter day by day.good sign for bangladesh cricket.thanks to all players.good luck.....

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 23:22 GMT)

I was surprised Abul Hasan was selected instead of Nazmul or Shafiul but to be honest, Hasan is just too expensive in this format but should only be considered for ODIs and Tests as he is a very fast bowler but still undeveloped. Nazmul should be given a chance as he can make batsman guess a lot of the time but got to admit, this Bangladesh team has greatly improved since BPL and long may it continue. The spin trio of Shakib, Razzaq and Sunny is a masterclass at T20s and ODIs and then spin reserves such as Nasir or Mahmudullah can be used as backups should one have an off-day. Ireland showed glimpse of their talent and still feel they may have a chance to win a game but was unfortunate today.

Posted by sabbor on (July 18, 2012, 23:15 GMT)

Saqlain Mushtaq not even hired yet, they are asking him to join but he hasnt come to BD yet, so if you dont know how to dance-please dont blame the floor.

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 23:09 GMT)

Elias Sunny figures today was the third best all time figures in T20 Internationals only behind to Mendis and Umar Gul. Such a shame there was no video coverage of the game but nevertheless, the Bangladeshi's proved that they are the team of the future. Ireland actually did have the ability to beat Bangladesh but they just made a lot of mistakes at crucial times and they may still have a chance of winning a game if they can sort out their errors. I'm still suspicious about Bangladesh's fast bowling and must be addressed otherwise we will struggle to compete at Test matches even against Zimbabwe.

Posted by BangCricFan on (July 18, 2012, 22:31 GMT)

@ siponus2007: One win against Ireland does not make BD team T20 champion. When we do this kind of big talk, BD haters gets the opportunity to do the foul talk about us. We should respect other teams as well and understand our position in world cricket. There is no offense of dreaming to be T20 champ, but we have to wait more to put ourselves at-least in the T20 ranking first.

Posted by bored_iam on (July 18, 2012, 21:51 GMT)

Was expecting BD to steamroll Scotland and the Netherlands but Ireland going down without a fight like this? Surprising. Hope the rest of the series a fight for the sake of both teams. Once again Shakib proved he's world class. But again I reiterate, if he has an off day-BD will struggle. Still don't see the rest of the team as a force at the World T20 yet. I sense that just as WI seems over-reliant on Gayle, Narine; BD getting increasingly over-reliant on Shakib. To those who'll counter by presenting Elias Sunny as an eg. -I still see him struggle against the bigger teams. Shakib is THE only player in the BD setup who can consistently challenge the bigger teams.

Good win by BD team. Thanks Justin Smyth for bringing out the live coverage.... This match shows the progress of BD team compared with no test playing countries....

Posted by smukhles on (July 18, 2012, 20:55 GMT)

Had no idea Irish Team is that much weak against spin attack, and when playing against Bangladesh, they are expected to be able to stand up against the world class spin and clearly they couldn't do that.

wished there was live telecasting ... i think it hurted a bit to the Iris..since it's an international game they should have done it... But hope to see that near future good luck ... But BanGaldesh Is The Bestt ,.... Hoope Tamim does Welll .... :) ...

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 20:34 GMT)

Dissapointing match for the Irish, they are much better than this but spin made all the difference and a wild card batter named Zia. And to top that, Bangladesh just hired Saqlain Mushtaq as their spin coach. Ireland's weakness to spin is exposed and I think this is a great preparation for Ireland as well before the World Cups in Sri Lanka. They better start preparing for different types of spin attacks but they must start Friday when they face the BD SLAs again!!

Posted by G-Rocker on (July 18, 2012, 20:31 GMT)

Well done BD boys...Ireland is a good team but Worlds best L.A.spin attack was too good for Ireland...Ireland will do Bangladesh doing day by day after years of hard work... good luck to BD & Ireland...

If bangladesh win all 5 matches, we will promote number 4 team in the T20 ranking

Posted by Sadequl on (July 18, 2012, 20:26 GMT)

Hope Bangladeshi selector's will know & realize which team combination would be the best one to choose for T-20 WC after finishing Bangladesh's recent tour in Zimbabwe & Europe coz in WC they will need to have the best & probably the toughest one from their side to defeat NZ/Pak.

Thanks to those critics who fueled us to play better. Thanks to those who wish us to play better.

Posted by bdfighter1 on (July 18, 2012, 20:17 GMT)

Well done tigers! U just rocked.. Thanks for ur brave performances.. The whole team played very well specially ESunny, Sakib, Razzak, Ziaur, Mahmudullah, Tamim were decent. Hope this performance will keep continue..

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 20:12 GMT)

congratulation bangladesh team.......they win the match by abig difference. but still there was a lacking in pace ball depertment. in this simming condition we expect better performance.........very very thanks to SUNNY and many many cograts for his debut match and 5 wickets. its a remarkable performance. it was dissapointing that there was no live telecast.

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 20:08 GMT)

@ Md Mushfiqur Rahman Minar and all my BD brothers.. com'on guys, Ireland have played well, they have beaten us in the past fare and square.. it's cricket! all respects to the irish as well.. well played! :)

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 20:04 GMT)

Bangladesh needs to replicate the same batting performance if they want to seal the series. i still believe Irish are a very tough team...just a bad day in the office for them no space for complacency. I urge the bd supporters to be respectful to the opponents. congrats to both teams

Posted by shaaniest on (July 18, 2012, 20:03 GMT)

Pitch and weather condition did not obstruct Bangladesh to do their natural performance especially the SLA bowlers... Congrats Tigers.. Hope to be enlisted in T20 rating.......

Posted by rony1008 on (July 18, 2012, 20:02 GMT)

Well played Bangladesh. But I won't be surprised if Ireland manage to win any of the next matches and the bandwagon of BD bashing starts. It never stops, even if Bangladesh becomes Asian runner-up. Bangladesh did a commendable job today beating Ireland in different condition than BD is used to play. Well done boys, you guys made us proud today.

Posted by EnglishCricket on (July 18, 2012, 19:57 GMT)

I think all thanks should go to Justin Smyth who informed everyone on the coverage of the game especially considering there wasn't any broadcast for those matches curiously but well done to both teams for playing especially in this awful weather.

Posted by Eat_Sleep_Play_Cricket on (July 18, 2012, 19:51 GMT)

Very well played Tigers. Good to see you perform in non sub continent conditions and winning by a good margin. Keep improving! Wishes from an Indian cricket fan.

Posted by on (July 18, 2012, 19:49 GMT)

Someone mentioned before that bangladesh is not in the T20 ranking. Its because they have played only two T20 matches after the last T20 WC. The upcoming 5 T20 matches will be a chance to update rankings.

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 19:48 GMT)

Bad performance by Shakib. How he conceeded 26 runs against the irish? Ordinary job from Sunny.Overall not very good performance by the Bangladeshis. They should win by 120+ runs against a poor team like Ireland.looooooooooooolzzzzzz!

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 19:47 GMT)

Worthy win for the Asia Cup runner up team...

Posted by BangCricFan on (July 18, 2012, 19:47 GMT)

Very good and convincing win by BD team. We should not be complacent before winning the series. I would like to hear the voice from BD haters who said BD might loose the series by 0-3. I expect 3-0 win for Bangladesh.

Posted by Sehwag_Is_Ordinary on (July 18, 2012, 19:46 GMT)

This match preview turned out to be a real joke really. Comeon what a mismatch

congrates Bangladesh. very shocking not to enjoy the live telecast. well done tigers. good luck in the rest of the series...

Love to see that BD replied the Irish strongly to their own yard to re-evaluate themselves before claiming, moving in to a further stage.

So that's what it is! That's what it is supposed be! Go Bangladesh! Thanks for showing our class to people who has a tendency to point fingure at us at all the times.

Posted by fr600 on (July 18, 2012, 19:38 GMT)

As an Irish, I can say that I heard a lot of people saying this Bangladesh team is a lot different compared to the past. I didn't believe them until today. Well played both teams, I'm sure Ireland will perform better next time.

Posted by Shajadul on (July 18, 2012, 19:36 GMT)

Ireland has surely felt the WRATH of the best left arm spin in the world. BD did well in first match. I hope this trend continues. Good luck for Ireland too. We were in the same position and has developed slowly. I hope they do well ( but not against BD ofcourse) :)

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 19:36 GMT)

Unfortunately and Surprisingly there was no broadcast for these matches and if Ireland really want full membership status then they have to sort out things like coverages in their country so viewers can see their class but have to give thanks to Cricinfo for keeping us informed, it was still entertaining but please Cricinfo if you could post some photos of the match that would be great.

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 19:35 GMT)

i think ireland should play the test cricket as they scored under 6 an over today.bu hoooo!!...:p

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 19:20 GMT)

where South Africa couldent stand front of the best spin attack of the world where these Ireland came from. todays results proved that Ireland has to go far way to secure a test status. the even couldent arranged a telecast for the match what a shame

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 19:14 GMT)

Looking at the match now, Ireland close to defeat by almost 100 runs, it seems like a mismatch. Which it should not be.

Ireland has got to learn how to play spin, even in their own conditions. Only then can they actually challenge Bangladesh. Elias Sunny is a decent bowler, but not someone who will grab a five for, in seaming conditions.

Posted by Quddus-Mamu on (July 18, 2012, 19:14 GMT)

Bangladesh is tough in any conditions.

Bangladesh will have easy win against Ireland. They even give a T-wash to Ireland by wining all the three matches. It is bad that no TV channel in BD is showing the game. I don't know even whether the recorded play will be shown or not. If Ireland and BD can improve the ranks TV channels will respect their supporters and come forward to broadcast the game live. So these two teams should play more often to raise their ranks.

It will be big test for BD to beat Ireland in their condition . But they have pure match winner like capt. mushi. He is the best t20 player for BD with the bat. also shakib can do with both his bat and bowl. Ash and tamim should be more attacking in the first 6 overs. Best of luck

Posted by vivek_khyati on (July 18, 2012, 11:25 GMT)

irish team is well balanced and can beat bangladesh as they have home advantage.. bangladesh hugely depends upon upon tamim and shakib.. if rahim, mahmudullah, nasir become consistent in their performance, then the tigers can be strong.. on the other hand, stirling is in terrific form.. if porterfield and joyce supports him well, its going to be very tough for bangladesh.. but, whoever wins, this series will help both teams ahead of the wc t20..

Come on lads. We can do this, if it doesn't rain. I was at Trent Bridge in 2009 and we went out with the attitude we were going to win, and did, comfortably. Bangladesh have improved since then, but we've improved more. People like Dockrell, Stirling, Wilson (in T20), Rankin, have either emerged or improved out of sight since 2009. And of course, we have Joyce back. 2-1 to us, I reckon. If it doesn't rain.

Posted by DarindaUK on (July 18, 2012, 10:46 GMT)

If the STAR Channel showing the games live, then it can be seen on CRICTIME.COM - Live Streaming. However, the weather forecast states for this evening is CLOUDY. Tigers may not able to perform as they're use to playing on bright daylight. However, if Tamim and Ashraful can stay in the crease for the first 10 overs and manages to score 9+ runs per over, then there's definately a game on. Ireland are very good at home and is a powerful team on T20's. Big hitters. Good luck to both teams, can't wait to see the game live (if it's on). Thanks to Cricinfo for keeping us updated. Really want to see Tigers performing as the did in the Warm up games. Tigers, please don't through away your wickets for unnecessary (silly) flashy shots (Ash's scoop). Play it like a man. Hit HARD>>>>>>6's.

Can anyone tell me as per BD time when d match will be started??

Posted by DecisionPending_BD on (July 18, 2012, 8:47 GMT)

If Ban bat first, then we should look for quick flow of run ( 10.00 rate will be good) at the start. Then we should give them a target of 160-170. If bowling first, then whack the top order. Mash can do that well. Bowler should keep the bowl in right place. If Arshaful plays (oh dear!! mayday mayday) what ever u do pls dont through your wicket. Good Luck Musy...

Posted by   on (July 18, 2012, 8:34 GMT)

This is right that Bangladesh should win those matches. But condition can abandon some matches. And I think this series will be a Shakib Al Hasan"s series. Our young star will get few chances to improve themselves coz, Bangladesh certainly won't want to loose a single match. From my point of view Bangladesh 11 should be in this way-

1. Tamim 2. Ashraful 3. Junayed 4. Mushfiq 5. Shakib 6. Mahmudullah 7. Zahurul 8. Mashrafee 9. Shafiul 10. Razzaq 11. Nazmul

I wish to see atleast 3 genuine seamer in this condition. Ziaur Rahman is good, but not good enough for international cricket. Bangladesh should give opportunity to Zunayed and Zahurul, coz this guys have some real quality to hit the balls outside the park which is need for T20.

@Maruf Ahmed Prosun: And I am not sure whether any TV channel in Bangladesh will telecast the match live.

It should be an easy 2-0 trump for Bangladesh. Then again you never know! Being a proud bangladeshi, I always hope they will win. I become even more confident after knowing the results of the 2 practice games. We also have to believe the fact that, Ireland at home will be very difficult to defeat. Any team at home condition is always strong! Even we almost had the Asia Cup this time. Condition in Ireland is not only new but also different, they are a cold country where as we are hot and humid. But we must know that this is summer time in Ireland, so we have every bit of chance to take them down :) Inshallah we will beat them. Lets hope for the best, and keep supporting Bangladeshi Tigers and cross our fingers for good cricket!!

Seems Mr McGlashan haven't followed BD for sometime. BPL, Mortaza and few new T20 inclusions (such as Zia, Sunny, Nasir) are not mentioned -rather mentioned in comments by fans. Bangladesh is quite balanced now in T20 format as Sunny has evolved equally miser in giving away runs as Shakib. Mahmudullah/Jahurul and Zia's recent long handle have added much needed potential cameo even in late middle order. This is something Bangladesh was missing for long. My Bangladesh 11 would be (batting order): 1. Tamim 2. Ashraful 3. Shakib 4.Mahmudullah 5. Mushfiq 6.Jahurul/Nasir 7.Zia 8. Mashrafee 9. Razzak 10. Sunny 11.Shafiul. If Bangladesh can play to its potential -they should win the series comfortably even under Irish condition.

I think Ireland will win 2-1.. But it will not b easy for them to manage sakib... Lets wait n see.. Surely it will b an interesting series....

Bang are a lil over-dependant on Shakib, especially in this format. Tamim has potential but he needs to deliver. Also a test for Mushfiq as captain. If Shakib has an off series: Ire 2-1 Bang. But Bang should look to start favourites.

It will be broadcasted by Channel 9 (Bangladesh) and Star Cricket.

Expecting to see a great match. Bangladesh has to deliver now as they start favorites even if they are playing away from home.

There is going to be no tv coverage of the games. So relax and follow the coverage here on cricinfo instead ;)

Should be an interesting game because fans and critics say Ban will win this or Ire will win this easily but lets see. To be honest, really should've included a few ODIs so that they are getting exposure to longer formats.

Hope B'desh will open up their t20 table with a easy win! GTG (Go Tigers Go)

For Bangladesh, its a must win series to get back on track. They performed well in T20 after their ( now infamous) BPL tournament where they did beat India, Sri Lanka and almost Pakistan ( 2 runs) during their Asia Cup. Also they did beat Zimbabwe, SA once and lost to them once too... So all in all, Bangladesh is expected to win even if its Irish conditions. Its T20 and any team can beat another team but given the experience and depth, Bangladesh is expected to win with their depth in batting and spin bowling. Ireland is no longer the pushovers and they will attempt to win each and every game to prove a point. But it isnt going to be easy dealing with the army of left arm spinners of Bangladesh and their black swan bowler Mashrafee Mortaza.

Indeed!BD is in extreme pressure! They must rise on the occasion...c'mon Tigers!prove the worth of the TEST STATUS!

As long as there's good weather for once, I predict at least a 2-1 victory in Bangladesh's favour.

As a team Ireland team is not prepared well to fight against Bangladesh. But Bangladesh team is prepared very well. As individual Irish Players are far better than Bangladesh team except (Tamim, Shakib and Mortaza). Let us see ? In which channel we can see the game in India ?
