Ireland v Bangladesh, 3rd T20, Stormont

Dashing Mortaza stuns Ireland

Bangladesh 141 for 8 (Tamim 39, Mortaza 30, Stirling 3-21) beat Ireland 140 for 8 (Mortaza 4-19) by two wickets

Just when Ireland thought they finally had the beating of Bangladesh, a savage batting assault by Mashrafe Mortaza ended their hopes and gave the visitors a 3-0 win in the series. That margin was unfair to the Irish, who took two games to the very last ball.

It was a game that defied the notion that there can be none of the subtle changes in Twenty20 that make the longer forms of the game so captivating. This was a game that swung and shifted over 240 balls of mostly high-quality T20 cricket.

"The last two games were probably a better reflection of where both teams are," said Bangladesh coach Richard Pybus. "Ireland were out of sorts in the first game but the last two both went down to the wire," he said of a series which saw Bangladesh pull off victory margins of 71 runs, one run and two wickets.

Bangladesh needed 32 off 16 balls when Mortaza smashed three sixes off four balls from the left-arm spinner, George Dockrell, the last of which Kevin O'Brien misjudged and eventually knocked over the rope for another maximum.

With eight balls left Mortaza was bowled by Kevin O'Brien, leaving just four needed off the last over. And while Trent Johnston and his fielders made sure every run was hard-earned, the scores were tied with one ball left. A scampered single by Elias Sunny and a whisker-missed shy by Kevin O'Brien saw another close win for Bangladesh.

It was desperately disappointing for Ireland, who are using the games to build towards the ICC World Twenty20 finals in Sri Lanka in September. They play far fewer T20s than full members - this series was their first home games in the shortest format since 2008 - and their aim will be to up that number rapidly in the future.

Bangladesh were unchanged, but Phil Simmons gave Tim Murtagh a first T20I cap, replacing Alex Cusack, and recalled Niall O'Brien in place of Ed Joyce. Although O'Brien hit a frisky 22 he, like most of Ireland's batsmen, got in and then got out. The middle order crumbled yet again, with Kevin O'Brien struggling in a sequence that has seen him get out five times in the last ten balls he has faced for Ireland. He was out first ball here to Mortaza, the man of the match, whose career best 4 for 19 ensured Ireland totalled just 140 for 8.

Early wickets were essential, but Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal and Mohammed Ashraful settled in from a testing start to record their nation's first fifty opening stand in this format. Tamim also recorded his best score in 18 T20 internationals.

They had taken the score to 62 in the 10th over, with the spinners on, when Ashraful needlessly carted the ball to John Mooney at long off, and within two overs the score was 69 for 3.

Another flurry of wickets saw Bangladesh collapse to 89 for 6 as Stirling and Dockrell exerted pressure. But just as the vociferous Irish crowd started to dream of a third win over these opponents, Mortaza and Mushfique Rahim put together a stand of 46 in 16 balls, which included the 21-run butchering of Dockrell's final over.

"I'm very happy with the spin quartet", said Pybus, "and the tour was good for our seamers too, who got experience of bowling in northern hemisphere conditions, learning that they have to get their lengths right.

"Our batting was pretty solid too, but we have a little work to do before the World Twenty20."

Good to see after surviving 4m lot of injuries in last 10 years Mashrafi still has stamina & skills to b a match-winner. Unfortunately BD have only 1 world class medium-fast bowler like him.

@Graemeo ov trablus - Banga fans are very happy as they usually cop a bagging on this site & always seem to have to justify their test status. Bangladesh's introduction into test cricket should of been handled better, instead they were thrown into full test series & got slaughtered. Recently, the series have been a bit more select & they generally compete well & are definately improving, but they still get bagged. IMO - they are not far behind where most other countries were 10 to 15 years after inclusion. @EnglishCricket - I sort of agree, however, they must still play the top teams. They should be playing home & away test series every year against Zimbabwe & have regular series between WI & NZ. There are plenty of promising aspects about Banga cricket, they still have some things to sort out, like the importance of their FC season v pro-club cricket.

Well done Bangladesh!!!! - Never mind how well Bangladesh do, there will always be detractors and the best way to answer these sceptics is by keep winning, that's exactly what we are doing. This Irish tour had proved plenty of positives than negatives for Bangladesh and our coach Pybus has identified them.We will build on these positives and work on these few negatives and we will be lot stronger for it.It was good for Bangladesh that the last two games was close encounter and we won them, because it brings out the better character of players who you least expected from.If the Irish had won these close games all of the Bangladeshi critics would have been praising the Irish to the hill just like when Bangladesh lost to Zimbabwe a year ago when Mushfiqur Rahim was caught when they only needed four from the last over.

graemo the last 2 matches were close only because Bangladesh batting underperformed and batsmen threw their wickets , otherwise BD would have won easily.

i wud take this result on any given day! in alien conditions, including pitch, weather & LOCAL UMPIRES, it is simply appreciatable. Not only, it's our 1st Banglawash (earlier we'd blanked the same team 3-0 in ODIs) in t20s, we've also found matchwinners in Elias Sunny & Nasir. Zia showed what he is capable of, Mashrafe showed what he is made of Slowly Tamim has started to get his feet right

We are quickly becoming an exciting team to watch!

Where are anti BD people (sorry joker) now. I want to see them

Posted by EnglishCricket on (July 22, 2012, 10:35 GMT)

My advise to Ireland is that instead of concentrating so much against the likes of England or Australia you should instead put your focus on to the likes of West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand and India because you have a much better chance of gaining victory over those weak opponents. Also I want to say, its actually unfair to say that this team is better than that team in T20 because T20 is simply just T20 and anything can happen and this series was proof for example, the first match was a clear mismatch and then the next two were extremely close and could've gone either way. When these two teams next play in an ODI Series then you can have a debate in where both these teams lie.....

Many Congrates to Bangladesh Team for No.4 T20 Ranking and 3-0 CleanSweep vs Irleand in Ireland. Huge Cheers from Pakistan for Bangladesh Team victories, Well Done Tigers

@Rezaul BANGLADESH to work harder, coz they are not in the row with Ireland. They are now a bit grown up and they must keep a gap in the scores. If Irish comes to close, that is teh thing to be fear ...!!!

I hope you are Bangladeshi, because if so you are the only one with a realistic assesment of their performance here. BD were stronger than I expected, but they came very close to losing the series even so! Still all kudos to Mortaza, what an outstanding performance.

Bangladesh team had improved a lot during the last 4-5 years. But still we need to focus on our lacking, specially i want to mention of our pace bowling... a lot to improve there...and we need some solid batting along with Tamim in the upper order....slowly but surely we are moving towards the goal...and we hope that we will be in among the three best ranked team in all format of the game before the next world cup.... Bangladesh should aimed like that and i'm sure you could hardly find anyone to criticize over of luck for Bangladesh Cricket Team.

Posted by   on (July 22, 2012, 9:43 GMT)

I know after this tour is finished, they head off to the Caribbean to play some games against Trinidad & Tobago and then some players will be playing in SLPL but Bangladesh should consider hosting Afghanistan in their ground so that they too are getting preparation for World T20 considering because they'll be playing as well and should play for 2 T20s and possibly an ODI game.

@Graemo Ov Trablus BD won 3-0 in Irish conditions when people like you triumphantly predicting the opposite but lets look at the overall results, shall we?In ODI's & T20I's BD now lead Ire 8-3 ( 4-0 in BD conditions and 4-1 in ireland, 2 matches ire won in seaming/swinging conditions of England and WI back in 07-09 when BD was a very young team ).And still Irish players and fans keep on saying that they are better than BD/ZIM/WI.Such misplaced false bravedo will lead you to more dissapointments in the future but I doubt ire fans will wake up from their false sense of superiority.

Posted by Happy_AusBang on (July 22, 2012, 9:21 GMT)

I think Ireland should play more games against India and Pakistan, particularly India, because Bangladesh have beaten them so many times I am sure among the Irish there are not much illusion of where they stand vis-a-vis Bangladesh. Still I congratulate them for fighting hard and trying their best. The next thing for them to do is to play against India and Pakistan. Bangladesh have beaten India a few times now although I don't claim BD to be stronger than IND but surely Ireland can beat them on their day, and maybe even Pakistan occasionally. Their next goal should be to play against India more regularly because they are the team currently looking weakest in the top eight.

Peoples are saying we depend so much on Sakib, Tamim. Well, this series was a perfect example to say against that factor. Nasir, Asraful, Sakib, Riad, Zia, Sunny, Razzak, Marshafee. all of them got success in this series and helped Bangladesh to win. That's got to see. But still we are the weakest pace team among Test nations. So we need to find a few better pace bowlers.

Posted by DecisionPending_BD on (July 22, 2012, 8:56 GMT)

No people are commenting form aboard fans like Aus,Eng,Pak,Ind etc. Because they didn't get any chance to say Ireland In better than Bangladesh. That's the way to stop peoples whining!!!! I hope we should take seriously Test Cricket to go further.

Posted by   on (July 22, 2012, 8:40 GMT)

Congratulations to the both team. No doubt Ireland is a fantastic team among all of the associates. But they should not be compare with Bangladesh yet. In cricket there has been a far far distance between Bangladesh & Ireland. Bangladesh is cricket craze country, even when they were got test status in 2000, the main thing was behind that the people of this country who not only love cricket but also almost worship cricket. On the other hand Ireland play cricket just for their amusement right now. Before apply for the test status they should create love in the majority of people at first for the cricket.

Posted by   on (July 22, 2012, 8:11 GMT)

Well done to Bangladesh, one excellent win and two pinched at the death through willpower and good late order hitting.

However, I've seen nothing to justify the triumphalism from Bangladesh fans on this thread. It could very easily have been 2-1 to Ireland, if O'Brien had held that catch in the last one, and any number of key moments in the second. Ireland's lack of chances against full-members, and their lack of competitive cricket due to bad weather this summer really counted against them.

Still, again congratulations to the Bangladesh team for overcoming strong opponents, we'll see who cdoes better in the WC :)

Posted by   on (July 22, 2012, 7:54 GMT)

The Bangladeshis have come a long way. They have shown great improvement and give them a year or two, they can surely be a side to reckon with.

@Lord_Dravid where are you now? All this time you were saying Ireland is better than Bangladesh, they will thrash them 3-0 easily. But, the result has become opposite of what you expected. Next time think twice before putting any illogical comments on Bangladesh team.

i think Ireland played really well. Ireland should play more game with Nepal, Usa, China, India to grown their wining habit. Ireland needs another 4-5 years to grow the structure of their cricket and after that they should apply for test status.

Posted by Dunwall on (July 22, 2012, 6:01 GMT)

Posted by satish619chandar on (July 22, 2012, 5:54 GMT)

Good wi for BD.. They are certainly on a high.. Wish they play more consistently.. Having a serious guy like Rahim as captain helps them a lot.. Shakib was good but he wasn't able to handle the pressure that well like Rahim.. Rahim just picked the best team on paper.. Elevating Mahmudullah and Nasir is a welcome move.. They have right men at places now.. They can challenge teams more frequently now if they can maintain the same tempo..

Posted by ostad on (July 22, 2012, 5:44 GMT)

This is called 'the tail of tigers'. It is as dangerous as the top and middle order. This 3rd T20I belongs to the bowlers who batted and bowled. Thanks to Ireland to assist us in putting us in World Rank 6 and then 4.

Well done Tigers!!! I have seen few comments from experts(without knowledge) during Zim tour...IRE should have test status...I don't think it's possible at this moment..IRE TVs prefer Golf over cricket-they don't have proper stadiums..Those who point fingers to BD, pls note, BD has 14+ crore mad fans following for cricket, sponsors are ready to expend money for any series..before test status in Dhaka Cricket League(not the national) big names like Jayasurya, Wasim Akram, Neil Fairbrother used to play..Cricket is in BD is like Football in European Nations..IRE could not win in their home ground, how could they expect any wins in subcontinent..Left Hand Magicians will drive them away..

Congratulations BD team for securing 4th place in T20I ranking. In past, we used to lose this type of close matches. Now, we see a change of attitude in our team. I hope, they will continue showing this attitude against the top teams. I understand, middle and tale order batsmen wanted an earlier finish which did not work. But we need to be more careful so that we can avoid this kind of collapse in future. We can use one pace bowler and take one more batsman which will increase our batting depth specially for this kind of situation.

@randikayaa. I agree. I feel the gulf between Ire and mayb also Afghanistan and the rest of the associates is larger than the gulf between Ire and Zim and Bang. These close matches + decent performances by Ire in ICC trophies hint this and only if Ire and also Afgh r given more matches vs teams like Bang and Zim n then a few vs NZ n W.I. will they get even better. Most importantly, they won't lose their best players to Eng. At this stage all Ire had to prove is that they can compete and they did. Bang did well to hold their nerves but Ire have had a moral victories. Experience playin at the highest level to me is the major gulf between Ire and Bang this series. The raw ingredients to win is there n has been for a while and only if ICC give Ire proper support n incentive will they get better. The good news is that like the new and vastly improved Zim, Ire will be playing more matches vs top class A teams. I think 2015 should have been a target for Ire to get test status.

the real cricket is test and One day internation. and t20 is a entertainment cricket. it is advertisment of all over the world to join ICC. it's ranking not a fact. please do not blame icc for t20 cricket rating. and thankx to Ireland. thats all

well-done ireland both 2 games regardless the result. Your balling is okay but batting needs to improve. Last game you got close not because you batted well but their pacers performed very bad. In t-20 wc you wouldnt get weak pace balling like bangladesh. So I hope you improve ur batting soon. Its very unfortunate such a talent like Mortaza got hit by injury and after coming back from a long injury he cant perform his original way. But this game he showed sign of recovering. Hope he recovers completely soon. Still bangladesh needs one/two more decent pacers , otherwise they will be thrashed in t20 wc by big teams. I guess Forhad Reza would be a good option for t-20 wc - he doesnt give away too many runs and can be dependable with bat.

Bangladesh Should arrange another t-20 series at home before t-20 world cup, it will help the team to gel more in familiar conditions. Ask Zimbabwe, Pakistan or West Indies and play 2 separate series of 3 match each as all other team will be busy playing. It will help BD toraise the performanece for World t-20. Best of Luck.

It was really a good match. Both team deserves the win but there can't be two winners :) By winning this match Bangladesh team advances them to no #4 position too. Congratulations to them and wish they will keep playing like this. In T20's every team is strong to beat others. In a particular day who played well in all section will celebrate victory. Wish Bangladesh will be consistent in all section and all format of cricket

Ireland need more games at the highest level. If anything this series is a reflection of the gulf between the ICC top tier and the second tier competitions. Irish are too good to be stuck in tier two without competitive games against top opposition. Fairplay to Bangladesh for their series win

Okay, this was another nerve cracking game and thanks to J. Smith for bringing us live commentary when we had no other means of getting update. Ireland played well today, I'd say better than yesterday and they could have won but bravo Bangladesh for snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

feel sad for Mr. Boycott. even after asia cup he said in a cricinfo interview that Ireland is better than Bangladesh ! just wait a few more days Boycott . You will see very soon the bangla-wash for the english !

Congrats Tigers!! Bangladesh is now at no. 4 in T20 Championship Ranking (above Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, India, West Indies) !!!

I missed Ramadan Prayer with almost no hope to get 32 in 16 balls. Still I glued to the proceeding and watched Mash snatching the game from Iris players and fans. 4th place in rating is little too much!

Remember the days, when Bangladesh used to lose close finish matches. It's good to see my country winning these close contests, albeit against a lesser known team. A bit more professionalism from the tail-enders with the "let-me-be-a-hero" instinct would give more wins in the future. We lost the Asia cup for this reason. Hope things change in the future.

bangladesh got one change too@cricinfo nazmul was in in place of hasan.

Glad to see Mash performing like he used to for BD. It is important for a team like BD to have more performer. One Shakib cant win all the matches for BD. They've to perform together to beat top teams like they did in Asia Cup :D. Asia Already has 3 awesome team and I hope BD will become like those team Soon :D

I was very disappointed in that Bangladesh collapse because there was simply no need and had plenty of time and were progressing steadily. Its amazing the amount of all-rounders Bangladesh have and full credit to Mortaza because I reckon he won this game single handedly with all that pressure MOTM deserved. Ireland apart from the first game excellent performance and like I have always said should be among the elite but have to prove to ICC that you are really serious i.e. Broadcast. The special thing about this win was that Bangladesh have won them AWAY in conditions much much different to theirs and if Ireland couldn't win at their home ground then I doubt they can come at all close at Bangladesh's territory.
