Sydney Wheatley Falding, who played for Northamptonshire against the Australians at Northampton in 1921, died suddenly at Leeds on November 7, aged 68. In his only first-class match, he saw the powerful 1921 Australians amass a total of 621 while he took only one wicket - that of Warwick Armstrong - for 119 runs. He later became a professional in the West Country and played minor counties cricket with considerable success for Devon between 1925 and 1932, scoring 3,137 runs at an average of 25.29 and taking 176 wickets at 18.49 each. He scored several centuries for Devon, including an innings of 162 against Berkshire in 1926.
