Raja Venkatraman was born in Mumbai and brought up in Calcutta. An attacking left-hand middle-order batsman, he played 41 first-class games for Bengal. He rates the Ranji Trophy triumph in 1989-90 as his most memorable moment, and his 90 against Punjab in the quarterfinal as his best innings. After his retirement, he served on the BCCI's media committee in 2005 and on the museum committee in 2008 before becoming a national selector in September.
