John Bastow, born at Bromley-by-Bow on October 30, 1850, died in a nursing-home on June 1 at the age of 76. A useful batsman and wicketkeeper, he played for Middlesex in 1874, 1875 and 1877, heading the averages in the first-mentioned year. His highest innings were 35 v. Surrey on Prince's ground and 28 and 34 not out in the return at the Oval. Later on he assisted Essex.
