India in Ireland ODI Match

Ireland v India

India won by 9 wickets (with 25 balls remaining) (D/L method)

Hello and a very warm welcome to you wherever you are to Cricinfo's live coverage of today's one-off one-day international from Stormont, Belfast, where hosts Ireland take on India. I'm Jamie Alter, your commentator for the game, hoping for a good day's cricket.

Ireland captain Trent Johnston flipped, Rahul Dravid won the toss, and has decided to bowl first with three seamers in his side. "Its important to get back into rhythm and test out our players in these conditions," he said.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has picked up an injury - the nature of which is yet to be determined - so Dinesh Karthik will keep wickets, while Zaheer Khan has been left out of the XI. Rohit Sharma, the young Mumbai batsman, makes his ODI debut while legspinner Piyush Chawla also gets a game.

The Ireland side is a depleted one, with World Cup bowling heroes Boyd Rankin, Andre Botha and Dave Langford-Smith and Middlesex batsman Eoin Morgan all absent. Only seven members of the squad which beat Pakistan in the World Cup will play but Johnston didnt seem to worry much. "People questioned where the next generation of Irish players would come from - well here they are," he said.

Just to remind you, the teams are:

Ireland: 1 William Porterfield, 2 Kenny Carroll, 3 Dominick Joyce, 4 Niall O'Brien (wk), 5 Gary Wilson, 6 Andrew White, 7 Kevin O'Brien, 8 Thinus Fourie, 9 Trent Johnston (capt), 10 Roger Whelan, 11 Kyle McCallan.

India: 1 Sourav Ganguly, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Rahul Dravid (capt), 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Ajit Agarkar, 10 RP Singh, 11 Sreesanth.

Loud cheers go round as the Indian team is announced to the crowd.

Seems to be fairly cool conditions out in the middle, with a maximum temperature of 13 degrees Celsius. Andrew "Gnasher" McGlashan, our man at the venue, tells me its cloudy but dry at the moment, with a small number of spectators and a few Indian flags around the ground.

The field, reportedly, was rather damp and the covers were on for most of the morning. Given the recent rain, and the heavy cloud cover, one would expect conditions to favour the bowlers and the pitch to be slower compared to the one used for the England-Ireland contest last year, the only ODI played at this ground.

There's no sun out right now, which means plenty of seam movement for the pace bowlers. The surface is hard, and there's the chance a few deliveries may stay a little low. Clearly, conditions favour the side bowling first.

Johnston believes that this game, and the one coming up against South Africa tomorrow, will be of "vital importance to Irish cricket". "It's a marvellous boost to the players to know that hundreds of millions of fans will be watching us play. It's another motivation for us," he said.

The double-header weekend, Ireland's second and third one-day internationals on home soil, will have worldwide tv exposure, which is good news for Irish cricket.

India have a long summer's tour of England coming up, and key members of the side have already stressed on the importance of starting off with wins against Ireland and South Africa here.

After the three-match series against South Africa at this very ground, India will travel to Scotland to take on Pakistan in a one-off ODI clash at Glasgow on July 3, the proceeds of which would go to the Prince Charles Charitable Trust.

Today's umpires are Mark Benson and Billy Bowden.

We're just moment away from the start of the game. Porterfield has taken strike, at the other end if Carroll. Sreesanth has the new ball from the Belfast City End.

Gnasher buzzes me: "3000 tickets sold for today, clearly many haven't quite made it out of bed just yet. If the rain stays away hopefully they will come down. Ground holds 4000 for this match."

0.1

Sreesanth to Porterfield, no run, extravagant seam movement away from the left-hander, pitches outside off stump and moves a good degree, left alone as three slips wait warming their fingers

0.2

Sreesanth to Porterfield, 1 leg bye, pitches outside leg stump and Porterfield shapes to flick down leg, but leg-byes is the signal from umpire Benson as Ireland are on the board

0.3

Sreesanth to Carroll, 2 runs, nice shot, just a dab as he comes forward to a straighter one on the stumps and flicks across the pads into the gat at midwicket

0.4

Sreesanth to Carroll, no run, good comeback delivery, pitching fuller outside off stump and sucking Carroll into a forward defensive, only to shape away and beat his prod

1.3

Singh to Carroll, no run, a tad slower this time and Carroll checks his drive to mid-off this time

1.4

Singh to Carroll, 2 runs, full on off stump and once again Carroll impresses with a neat little push into that gap at midwicket for a couple

1.5

Singh to Carroll, 1 wide, this one's shorter and moving away well outside off stump, no swing back in for RP and wide is the call from the umpire

1.5

Singh to Carroll, no run, lands on leg stump and swings in, Carroll gets outside his crease with a big stride forward to counter the movement, RP and Co appeal but Bowden shakes his head, not a bad shout again but doing too much

1.6

Singh to Carroll, no run, fuller and slower outside off stump and he has to reach out and poke that to point

End of over 2 (3 runs) Ireland 7/0 (RR: 3.50)

Sreesanth to Carroll, no run, a little wider of off stump this time, and he comes out a good distance and plays that along the ground to point

2.5

Sreesanth to Carroll, no run, good ball from Sreesanth, seeing Carroll step out of his crease and changing the pace and length, forcing a forward defensive back down the ground

2.6

Sreesanth to Carroll, no run, this one nips back off a shorter length outside leg stump and catches him high on the thigh, Carroll was again looking to make room and use the feet

End of over 3 (3 runs) Ireland 10/0 (RR: 3.33)

4.1

Sreesanth to Carroll, OUT, edged and taken by a diving Karthik! Was fullish and leaving Carroll, who drove loosely while not to the pitch and the thick outside edge was snapped up beautifully by the 'keeper, diving to his right and plucking it in front of Tendulkar at first slip

KED Carroll c †Karthik b Sreesanth 7 (20m 14b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Good seam position on that last ball from Sreesanth. He really can be a handfull if he lands it on the seam. Good start from him. Ireland lose their first wicket. Here's Dominick Joyce, brother of England's Ed.

4.2

Sreesanth to Joyce, no run, good length outside off stump, moving in as Joyce shoulders arms to it

Gnasher has some info from the ground: "The Indian fans are making plenty of noise, bringing a little bit of Bangalore to Belfast." Hoo-hah, I say.

5.2

Singh to Joyce, no run, short of a length outside off stump, moving away, and he leaves it be

5.3

Singh to Joyce, no run, nippy delivery, pitching on a length outside off stump and catching Joyce high on the front leg, was clearly going over the stumps

5.4

Singh to Joyce, no run, angled wider across the batsman, who plants the front foot out and shoulders arms

6.6

So India bowl Ireland out for 193 after winning a good toss. Sreesanth got the inroads, and the impressive Chawla, in just his second game, kept a check on the middle order's proceedings. Ireland's innings owed plenty to Niall O'Brien's 52, and a handy partnership with captain Johnston. India have 194 to chase in this one-off ODI at Belfast. I'm Jamie Alter, your commentator for the game, and I'll be seeing you for the second innings shortly. Cheers!
