South Africa tour of Ireland, Only ODI: Ireland v South Africa at Belfast, Jun 24, 2007

4.00 pm We're finally ready to get underway. The fans who've stuck around through the rain have been rewarded for their patience.

The bowlers' run-ups are still a little damp but the pitch is fine. It's the same strip that was used for the Ireland-India game on Saturday. It will do a bit early on for the bowlers and it's unlikely to be run-fest. Hooray for that. Kallis wasn't too fussed about batting first though.

It's a 31-overs a side game. Out come AB de Villiers and Morne van Wyk to open for South Africa. Roger Whelan, who bowled Sachin Tendulkar, in his first over on debut yesterday, has the new ball and will run in from over the wicket.

Morne van Wyk will face the first ball, he's playing his first ODI in four years.

3.30 pm Toss Well the two captains finally walk out for the toss, some five hours after the scheduled start. Trent Johnston wins the toss and Ireland will bowl first.

South Africa have rested Andrew Hall, Charl Langeveldt and Andre Nel and have given Thandi Tshabalala and Vernon Philander their debuts. Incidentally, it's Philander's birthday today so it's a pretty awesome birthday present.

Ireland have made just one change. Alex Cusack, a batsman who bowls a bit, replaces Gary Wilson. Cusack will also be making his one-day debut. He's played just List A game so far.

Ireland 1 William Porterfield, 2 Kenneth Carroll, 3 Dominick Joyce, 4 Niall O'Brien (wk), 5 Alex Cusack, 6 Kevin O'Brien 7 Andrew White, 8 Trent Johnston (capt), 9 Kyle McCallan, 10 Thinus Fourie, 11 Roger Whelan

South Africa 1 AB de Villiers, 2 Morne van Wyk, 3 Jacques Kallis (capt), 4 Herschelle Gibbs, 5 Jean-Paul Duminy, 6 Justin Kemp, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Makhaya Ntini, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Thandi Tshabalala

3.15 pm News of play at last. If there is no further rain, we'll have the toss at 3.30 pm, that's in 15 minutes, and play will begin at 4.00 pm. It will be a 31-overs a side game.

2.58 pm The covers are coming off, we'll bring you news of the inspection as soon as we have it.

2.52 pm Andrew has some rather extraordinary news for us. The sun is out and although it hasn't stopped raining completely, it's "sunscreen and shades weather!"

2.30 pm The rain is getting heavier now. Andrew reckons that 5.30 pm is the latest they can start for a 20-overs a side game.

1.50 pm And the rain's back with omnious clouds looming in the distance. Wonder if de Villiers is still kicking that football around? He most certainly is, says Andrew. The few hundreds are still sticking it out, huddled under umbrellas. Full marks for patience.

1.45 pm The players are starting to warm up, AB de Villiers is kicking a football around, says Andrew. That's definitely good news. You'll have official information as soon as we do.

1.20 pm Still concerns over run-ups at the City End, next look 1.45pm local time, says Andrew from the ground. As long as the rain stays away, we should get some sort of a game in today. Remember the light lasts for a long time in Ireland at this time of year. Andrew says the word is that a few of the younger South African players may be given a chance in this match.

1.15 pm The umpires are having a chat with the two captains, Trent Johnston and Jacques Kallis. It's got brighter and the rain has ceased but the run-ups are a bit of a worry.

12.40 pm And here's the good news. The rain has stopped for the moment. Billy Bowden and Aleem Dar are having a look under the covers at the run ups while the groundstaff are beginning to take off the sheets covering the square.

12.10 pm Well we're nearly 90 minutes past the scheduled start and it's still raining with covers protecting the pitch and square. We'll bring you regular updates and here's hoping the next one will have good news.

11.40 am It's still raining and the full covers are in place which means that the inspection scheduled for 11.45 am may not happen.

11.15 am More of the same, I'm afraid. There will be another inspection at 11.45 am but it's now spitting with rain, informs Andrew. The covers and sheets are back in place.

11.10 am A few umbrellas up in the (small) crowd, says Andrew. There are a few hundred in at the moment. The next inspection is just around the corner.

10.30 am There's been some seepage on to the pitch. Billy Bowden and Aleem Dar, the umpires for today, are inspecting a damp patch but fortunately it's on the edge of the pitch and not anywhere near the length areas . There will be another inspection at 11.15 am. There are some concerns about the pitch and the bowlers' run-ups.

10.05 am Andrew McGlashan, Cricinfo's man at Stormont, has some rather unpleasant news. There was a lot of overnight rain and the outfield is fairly wet. There will be an inspection at 10.30 am with a view of starting at 11am. The weather at the moment is dry and a little warmer than yesterday, but heavy showers are forecast for the afternoon.

9.45 am Hello everybody and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the second ODI at Stormont. I'm George Binoy, your commentator for today's game which is between hosts Ireland and South Africa.

Saturday's affair was one-sided, with India brushing Ireland aside by nine wickets. Andrew McGlashan, our man on the spot, reported that the crowds were thin for that match so lets hope the numbers are larger today. A fuller house - the stadium has a capacity of 4000 - will undoubtedly do their best to spur on the home team.
