England tour of Ireland, 2009 / Commentary

England in Ireland ODI Match

Ireland v England

England won by 3 runs (D/L method)

Good morning and a very warm welcome from Stormont for the ODI between Ireland and England.

The good news is that despite much rain over the past 48hrs we are set to start on time.

England have won the toss and will bat. England have decided to rest Broad and Anderson, while Dublin born Morgan is 12th man.

England team: RS Bopara, JL Denly, IJL Trott, +MJ Prior, *PD Collingwood, OA Shah, LJ Wright, AU Rashid, GP Swann, TT Bresnan, RJ Sidebottom.

Ireland team: *WTS Porterfield, +NJ O'Brien, PR Stirling, AC Botha, KJ O'Brien, AR White, AR Cusack, JF Mooney, DT Johnston, WK McCallan, RM West.

Ireland welcome back Niall O'Brien into the side, and are at full strength with the exception of Boyd Rankin who failed a fitness test yesterday.

Today is also Trent Johnston's 100th cap for Ireland...who received warm applause from the good crowd here after a brief presentation.

Today also sees a much changed England team from when they last played here in 2006. Collingwood being the sole player.

ODI debuts for Denly, Rashid and Trott

The umpires are on the pitch and are soon followed by the Ireland team and the England openers. Here we go folks.

The umpires and players are on the pitch and are keen to get started. It's cloudy, sunny and windy - so a good day for Duckworth-Lewis.

5.15pmThe remaining covers have been removed and the England players are doing a little fielding practice....it's looking very promising as long as there are no further delays. Join us for Ireland's run chase in about 20 minutes!

5.05pm Word is the game will re-start at 5.36pm precisely. It is now a 20 over game and Ireland will need 116 to win. The sun is out too would you believe, along with a few spots of rain of course.

4.40pm The pitch inspection is under way. The outer covers are off and we wait for the verdict on the state of the pitch. Hang in there folks.

4.25pm The umpires have decided the pitch is a bit wet under foot and so they will do a further inspection at 4.40pm. Meanwhile the ground staff are doing their best to mop up the outfield. The covers have not yet been removed.

4.10pm It's looking promising..it has stopped raining and the sun is trying to poke through the cloud. The umpires are meandering around the pitch and we await news of possible re-start.

3.40pm An announcement has been made to thank all for their patience while we wait and hope for the rain to clear. It is understood play can re-start as late as 5.35pm I'm hearing so there's time yet so keep those fingers crossed.

3.25pm Umpires have been out to look at the pitch, however its still raining here unfortunately. As soon as we hear something more we'll let you know.

The rain is back and this time it looks as though it may be here for a while. It's not too heavy but the picture is pretty bleak at the moment.

Match State: Delay - Rain

Well Ireland bowled and fielded very well to restrict England to a very modest total. Join us for Ireland's reply after the break.
