Johnny Johnstone, who played his club cricket for Hartlepool and Darlington, was an opening bowler for Durham for more than a decade and a half, retiring shortly before the county gained first-class status in 1992. In a 14-year county career he took 252 wickets at 22.06 with a best of 6 for 45 against Cambridgeshire in 1989. He was a genuine No. 11 batsman with a highest score of 18. "He'd try to stop there if you wanted him to, but I don't think you'd ever call John a stroke maker," recalled county scorer Brian Hunt. "Johnny was the perfect gentleman, always a smile on his face, really enhanced league cricket, too."
