It was the 1518th Test in cricket history. It was England's 775th and Pakistan's 272nd Test match. It was the 124th Test match on Pakistan soil and 20th between these two sides. It was the 57th Test match between these two sides. The record now reads England 14, Pakistan 9, drawn 34. Umpires Steve Bucknor and Mian Mohammad Aslam officiated in their 53rd and sixth Test respectively. Danish Kaneria (right handed batsman and leg-break bowler) made his Test debut. He became the 163rd player to represent Pakistan in Test cricket. He became the first Hindu player to play for Pakistan since Anil Dalpat who played in nine Tests from 1983-84 to 1984-85. Incidentally Danish is the cousin of Anil Dalpat. Wasim Akram played his 100th Test match. He became the third Pakistani and 24th player overall to complete century of Test match appearances. The others to play for Pakistan in 100 Tests are Javed Miandad (124) and Salim Malik (103). Incidentally Akram is the first left arm fast bowler to join this elite club and only the fourth bowler to do so after Kapil Dev (131), Courtney Walsh (123) and Ian Botham (102). Graham Thorpe took four catches in the field in Pakistan's first innings. He became the fourth Englishman to hold four catches in an innings for England against Pakistan after JE McConnon (at Manchester in 1954), Tony Greig (at Leeds in 1974) and Graeme Hick (at Leeds in 1992). By reaching his fifty in 50 balls, Saeed Anwar scored the second 'recorded' fastest fifty by a Pakistani in terms of balls. The quickest remains with Wasim Akram who raced to his fifty in just 35 balls against Australia at Perth in 1999-00. However the fastest fifty in terms of minutes by a Pakistani is still held by Intikhab Alam who reached his fifty in 43 balls (the details of balls faced are not available) during his innings of 138 against Pakistan at Hyderabad in 1972-73. Incidentally Akram's fifty came in 61 minutes and that of Anwar in 96 minutes. Ashley Giles (5 for 75) became only the fifth English right arm spinner to capture a five wicket innings haul against Pakistan after David Allen (5 for 30 at Dhaka in 1961-62), Bob Appleyard (5 for 51 at Nottingham in 1954), Jack Birkenshaw (5 for 57 at Karachi in 1972-73) and Pat Pocock (5 for 169 at Hyderabad Sind in 1972-73). Giles' figures are the best by an English right arm spinner since Peter Such took six for 67 against Australia at Manchester in 1993. England's first innings included as many as 50 extras. It was the seventh occasion when Pakistani bowlers and fielders conceded 50 or more extras in an innings. However it is not a record for Pakistan against England. Pakistan had conceded 53 extras at Manchester Test in 1992 and 52 at Birmingham in 1987. Pakistani bowlers sent down as many as 32 no-balls in England's first innings - a new record for Pakistan against England. The previous record was of 23 no-balls at Leeds in 1992. Abdur Razzaq scored his maiden Test century in his 11th Testa day after his 21st birthday. He is the 33rd youngest batsman in Test cricket to score a maiden century. The record is held by another Pakistani Mushtaq Mohammad who made 101 against India at Delhi in 1960-61 at the age of 17 years 81 days. Pakistan and England have now played 20 Tests against each other on Pakistani soil , out of which only three have ended decisively with Pakistan winning two and England winning one. 17 Tests have ended in draw.
