Kitply Cup, 2nd Match: India v Pakistan at Dhaka, Jun 10, 2008
Kitply Cup - 2nd match
India won by 140 runs
Played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur (neutral venue)
10 June 2008 - day/night match (50-over match)

Hi there. Welcome to the Pakistan-India encounter. You must be wondering how the weather is. George Binoy, our man at the ground, has news for us: "Cloudy skies. No imminent rain but there might be a shower at some point. There are covers protecting the bowler's run up at each end but the pitch and the square are uncovered though the ground staff are with the covers just in case."

Pitch report: "Very dark wicket but hard and well rolled," says Arun Lal, who adds, "it will offer slow spin." Robin Uthappa says, "I have never seen anything like this before. It's really really dark."

George says, "the pitch is dark because black soil is used. And the covers are off now and we are ready for toss. There is one big fat dark cloud overhead, but looks like it's moving past the stadium. Excellent weather if the rain stays away, cloudy, cool and with a nice breeze".

Toss: Dhoni has won the toss and has decided to bat. "The wicket gets slower and starts to spin later."

India: V Sehwag, G Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, RG Sharma, YK Pathan, MS Dhoni, SK Raina, IK Pathan, PP Chawla, P Kumar, I Sharma

Pakistan: Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Misbah-ul-Haq, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Iftikhar Anjum

Robin Uthappa is the 12th man today. George has trained his binoculars on him: "Uthappa is still knocking throw downs from Robin Singh by the boundary. For those interested, he's done away with his IPL haircut, the lightning marks on his head have been removed."

And George is really having a close look at the cricketers now. Next up is Pragyan Ojha. "Don't know how many of you have noticed, but Pragyan Ojha has a large tattoo on each of his upper arms. One is of a traditionally dressed Indian lady, a rather good looking one. The other is design that I didn't recognise."

Barry pings us: "Hello from a scorching hot London. Forgive my cricketing ignorance but would it not have been better to have bowled first to give your batsmen a good sighting of an unsure pitch. Also if D/L method comes into it I always feel it is better to chase?"

Barry... scorching London? Now, that's an oxymoron. And Dhoni had the answer to your query. He reckons it will take spin later and get slower and so, he wants to bat first. The darkness is just due to the black soil being used. And btw, Shoaib Malik said he would have batted first as well.

George has thankfully stopped peering at the cricketers and has swung his binoculars to the crowd. "Fair number of Pakistan flags in the left half of the stadium, a few indian ones as well. There's hardly anyone in the right-half from my view in the press box."

Vikas Sikka says: "Dhaka has been an unlucky place for the Indian debutants. Many cricketers who have made their debut at Dhaka have gone into the wilderness and are no more big names in World Cricket. A few examples:- Shiv Sunder Das, Amit Bhandari, Avishkar Salvi, Rahul Sanghvi, Syed Saba Karim. It is interesting to note here that Gautam Gambhir had also made his debut at Dhaka and although he is beginning to be a permanent fixture in the side now, in 5 years of his international career, he has managed to play just 47 ODIs."

George has some info for us from the ground: "They are flashing the ICC anti-racism code on the big screen, the font's rather small and it's tough to read. Weather update: From the press box, dark clouds have been harmlessly floating across the ground from left to right. One just passed by. I can see a bit of blue in the skies towards my left."

12.5

Iftikhar Anjum to Sehwag, no run, Controversy there. Finally they take a catch or do they Hold on .. Akmal has grounded it. It was a length delivery that straightened with a bit of bounce outside off, a shufling Sehwag jabbed at it and it went to right of Akmal who lunged and it bobbed up off the gloves and as he tried to pick it up it looked as if it hit the ground. Akmal had his back to the stumps as he had twisted his body to get it. Sehwag had a look, saw him celebrating and walked back to the pavilion. some one from the dressing room asked him to stop. And now he is walking back to the middle. the umpires are on the walkie talkie and the Pakistan players are having drinks. Malik is talking to the umpires, Sehwag is still there in the middle. Wahab Riaz to Sehwag, FOUR, short-pitched delivery, down the leg side, Sehwag stands on his toes and laps it around the corner to the fine-leg boundary

Another leading edge as Sehwag tries to work a length delivery on middle and off to the leg side and it went in the air, Afridi was late in reacting as it happens with leading edges, ran back but couldn't reach. 17.1

Umar Gul to Gambhir, 1 run, tad short in length, outside off stump, cut to third man for another single. The pitch has been a slightly sluggish and so they have tried not to hit too many deliveries on the up, have waited for the ball to come and have nudged many to third man and behind square

6.50 pm Centre cover is being removed and all covers going off now. Play to start at 6.55 pm

And it's raining now. The crowd head for shelter. Our man George says," the ground staff have brought the covers on and it's not heavy rain. Let's see whether it will subside soon. The umpires are still out there. Steady drizzle on. They have not yet brought on all the covers, they usually use at least five; only three on the field at the moment".

Meanwhile. Faisal has a response to an earlier comment: "I disagree. This 20-40 over period of ODI is the most interesting part, as its a battle between who can dominate tactically after the initial burst of powerplays! In this period the experience of test matches come in play most of the time!"

And Kaushik: "I think one innovation in ODI could be split the innings into 2 halves (similar to baseball). 30/20 overs. this way we would remove the benefit of toss and the conditions can be used by both teams evenly."

Martin Crowe, the former captain of New Zealand, had this suggestion. Play two twenty20 innings in a game.

Sohaib Ahmed: "In regards to the Dhoni dismissal, I remember Ian Chappell once mentioning on commentary that the umpires are instructed to assume that a ball hitting the batsman on the full is going straight on. Under that assumption, Dhoni's dismissal was fair." Right Sohaib but you have to assume it goes straight on in that angle of the delivery. You can't say it would have turned and missed the stumps or hit the stumps but the angle has to be taken in account. Since that Dhoni dismissal was from a ball from wide round the stumps, you have to assume it will go straight on in that angle and so it would have misse.d

And this is second one well above the waist-high, beamer and he can't bowl any more. He has to go. He had bowled one such delivery in the 24 th over to Yousuf. He has bowled them at the two brothers! Obviously, it slipped off his hands. Now four guys confer to decide who will bowl. Malik, Afridi, Misbah and Younis Khan are the men. Aamir Sohail says he saw Younis Khan ask Malik to bowl and Malik pointed to his shoulder. And surprise it's going to be Tanvir to bowl. Why would you waste two deliveries of your regular bowler?

Younis Khan to Chawla, no run, dot ball to finish the innings! Younis has done a fab job. On the blockhole on the middle, dug back to him. Younis has a big smile on his face. So does Malik who rushes to congratulate him. Praveen Kumar too laughs and Younis pats him on the back.

Pakistan need 331 to win from 50 overs. Sehwag and Gambhir got India to a flier before the track got slower and lower and Pakistan slowed the progress. But Yuvraj Singh, who fought hard initially to adjust to the pitch as few balls stopped on him, did well to play a lovely cameo and India have finished with a very strong total.

Phil takes a dig at Lawson who had wanted Pakistan to beat India by 150 runs: "Pakistan now have a little matter of scoring 481 to please Lawson."

Sid Ravindran will start the commentary in the chase. Join him in a short while for the run chase.
