Wisden obituary
Lewis Erskine Wyndham Williams, who died at St. Hilary, Glamorgan on April 24, aged 73, played for Glamorgan 1928-30, and scored 53 not out on his debut v Oxford. But it was as captain, commander, and chairman of South Wales Hunts CC that `Tip' Williams will remain a lasting figurehead in Welsh cricket. It was in the bar of Park Hotel, Cardiff, that Peter Clay (brother of JC) and `Tip' (educated at Oratory School) founded SWHs in 1926, and for an age he was chairman of the club until succeeding the late JC Clay as president only this year. Here indeed was a regent, who, following his extreme kindness and evening skills at the piano, exercised his discipline with some fame with regard to arrival on time, good shape of body, clean dress, and hard play. Such success of `Tip' Williams was my idea of Lord Hawke's for Yorkshire and my comparison of The Founder's for Arabs CC. Playing for SWHs, with `Tip' in his deckchair, was to me like fighting for a place in the school team. But whenever a nod of congratulations was delivered it was just as moving as winning those 1st XI colours.
