Much was expected of Steve Palframan when he emerged as South Africa's No. 2 wicketkeeper behind Dave Richardson. Blessed with a keen eye, his batting was inconsistent, varying from excellent to what one critic described as "downright inept". His wicketkeeping was unspectacular but steady. His chances to impress came when Richardson fractured his left index finger on the eve of the 1996 World Cup and he was called into the squad. He played in all the games but when Richardson returned he was soon overtaken by Mark Boucher in the pecking order.
