A giant of a man, Dobbo Townshend had a brief and uneventful playing career but it was off the pitch that a made a huge impression as an administrator and enthusiast. At various times he was manager of the national team, coach and manager of Matabeleland, and a match referee in domestic competitions. He also put tremendous energy into the Bulawayo Athletic Club and its facilities.
