Assault on Jesse Ryder March 27, 2013

'It sounds quite sinister to me' - NZ prime minister

ESPNcricinfo staff
New Zealand prime minister suggests sinister motives might be afoot in the assault on Jesse Ryder, amid a flood of well wishes and expressions of shock at the attack
39

"It sounds quite sinister to me. I mean the fact that there would be four guys attacking him, [from] the media reports I saw looked somewhat unprovoked, and there must be something behind that. The assault seems very vicious so obviously we wish him a speedy recovery, and I'm sure the police will be working to get to the bottom of it."
New Zealand prime minister, John Key

"We don't need security. This is a nice suburb. We run security, we run doormen on the weekend, purely to make sure we have no intoxicated [people] and no underagers at the venue. It's not about having bouncers on the door. We have doormen that meet and greet and say farewell to the guests … the bar runs very well, we have got nice clientele, and we don't need security early in the week."
Steve Holmes, general manager at Aikman's bar, where the incident occurred

"Thanks for the calls and msgs of support for Jesse. Just heading to Chch to see him."
Ryder's manager and friend, Aaron Klee

"We are all shocked by what has occurred and extremely concerned for Jesse. New Zealand Cricket's thoughts are with him and his family.''
New Zealand Cricket chief executive, David White

"This is very unfortunate. He was looking forward to come, and he was supposed to board the flight for Delhi tomorrow [Friday]."
TA Sekar, the team director of Delhi Daredevils, Ryder's IPL team

"We are extremely saddened by the incident, we're very concerned for Jesse's well-being of course. He's been a big part of the team and the organisation for a long time now. Our primary focus right now is Jesse's welfare, and that involves supporting his family and his management as much as we can, hospital staff as well. We're also working very closely with the police in terms of their investigation."
Peter Clinton, Wellington Cricket chief executive

"Come on @DijaRyder show the fight you have within thinking of you brother.''
A tweet from Monty Betham, at whose gym Ryder trains

"Thinking of you mate @DijaRyder"
A tweet from New Zealand team-mate and former captain, Ross Taylor

"I am devastated. I just hope he pulls through, I don't know what else to say."
Ryder's boxing trainer, Billy Graham, who received an award on Ryder's behalf on Tuesday night

"Lots of positive thoughts for your recovery @DijaRyder... To those cowards, you are not cantabrians or even NZ'ers, you are disgraceful."
A tweet from Andrew Ellis, Ryder's New Zealand team-mate and Canterbury fast bowler, the side Ryder played two days ago

This incident is once again a sad indictment of NZ soicity , it is a country that when you get to the top either as a cricketer ,all black or other sports star ,people are very quick to have a go at you verbally and physicaly, Jesse is a victim of this, some people blame him for the black caps woes, He has is own issues to deal with and the NZ media and public do him no favours. Get well soon Jesse ,we are all supporting you,I hope one day we will see you back in NZ colours, but if this is what your own country folk do to you then no one would blame you if you decided to take your talents elsewhere . All cricketers wish you well.

Truly shocking. Obviously most of us don't have the full facts yet. BUT it seems that celebrities/sportsmen etc appear to be a target for a certain type of person, when they are out in public. Wish JR all the best, and wouldn't it be wonderful to have him fully back in the NZ team in all forms of cricket asap.

For those who may not know; Merivale is an upmarket, wealthy area of Christchurch. This is not where an incident of this type would occur, which is why I expect the PM called it sinister. The police say it was not alcohol related. Best wishes to Ryder.
