'You should not be embarrassing your country'

Former players react to India's humiliating 1-3 series defeat in England

"If you do not want to be playing Test cricket for India, quit. Just play limited-overs cricket. You should not be embarrassing your country like that."
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar

"It's a disgrace to think that India have been blown away in 29 overs under blue skies on a pitch that was only doing a bit. They should be embarrassed. Some of those strokes were of players who didn't want to fight for their country."
Former England captain Michael Vaughan

"India were pathetic when they had to bat and bowl on two seaming, swinging pitches at Old Trafford and The Oval... The Indian batsmen were like lambs to the slaughter."
Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott

"Dhoni led the team poorly. His selection policy, strategy, field placing and bowling changes lacked commonsense ... Unfortunately for him and India, he had Duncan Fletcher as the coach who, it seems, is devoid of any ideas and has no clue as to how to turn things around."
Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar

"The support staff and the think tank really let down the team very badly. I hope the BCCI sacks them immediately unless they go once again by what the senior players in the team feel about them" he said.

"I'm not happy with his keeping and captaincy. He's got his own mind. He always keeps repeating that. He always expects a miracle. Miracles cannot happen all the time. It happens once in a blue moon."
Former India captain Gundappa Viswanath

"I am surprised these youngsters did not change their technique which a player like (Alastair) Cook did after England's defeat at Lord's by standing a few feet outside the crease to counter Bhuvneshwar Kumar's swing bowling."
Former India captain Chandu Borde

"What was Fletcher doing after we won the Lord's Test on a difficult pitch? This is where he lacked imagination in keeping the lead. Yes, I think Fletcher has to go."
Former India captain Ajit Wadekar

"I am categorically saying that Fletcher's contribution to the team was a big zero."
Former India offspinner Erapalli Prasanna

"The first people to take [Narendra] Modi's speech seriously is the Indian cricket team. Their runs will now only be Made in India."
Indian politician Digvijaya Singh, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent call to strengthen India's manufacturing sector

These losses will not change, unless BCCI changes. Being the richest board in the world, BCCI is still targeting in making money. There are more talents in India than anyone else has. But still, they couldn't make it, due to the high politics involved in BCCI. BCCI should be come under Government control. Then please give the test captain to somebody else other than Dhoni. He already tired of playing cricket. Give him some rest. I am sure Kohli and Pujara will come back strongly, so no worries on batting. And bowling concerns will always be there for India from the origin of cricket.

Everyone in the team has to take responsibility for this debacle. The batsmen with their pathetic batting display, Captain with some really poor field placements and poor bowling changes, coach with some unimaginative coaching and the players in general for a pathetic display of international fielding and morale. No one person deserves to be blamed.

The blame completely lies with our top 4 batsmen - Vijay, Gambhir/Dhawan, Pukars & Kohli. How much do you expect the bowlers to do when the batsmen have put up less than 200 runs in every innings.

@Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas_Atheist: Your ire against Fletcher is understandable, but why're you so mad at Dhoni? The guy led us to #1 position in all 3 formats and in this series, has among the top 3 batting averages in our side (top 2 among batsmen anyway, and way ahead of your favorite to succeed - Pujara). Maybe your should put the blame where it resides: the failures of #3 and #4 in 10 straight innings despite getting decent starts thanks to Vijay in almost all of the matches.

All the comments from the seniors are deserved but it is unfair to blame Dhoni solely for this extreme humiliation. The whole unit (Batting, Bowling and Fielding) failed collectively. Dhoni deserves lot of criticism for shoddy keeping and some unimaginative captaincy but I do not think anyone else would've done any better if all the units fail together. It is a good chance for someone new to know how to captain a team starting from the Home west indies series and then captain the team in Australia. It would be a good beginning. The only candidates for captaincy in the team are Kohli (even though I am not in favor of this as his batting is already suffering), Ashwin (even though he has a long way to go to prove that he deserves a place in the 11 for his bowling). All others apart from Kohli and Ashwin are just hanging in the team. Vijay, Rahane, Bhuvi, Ishant, Shami, Pujara, Jadeja are not captaincy material and the only alternatives available for India are Kohli and Ashwin.

Just take a look at what our former greats have to say. They are right. Time for some changes. @Dravid_Gravitas I completely agree with you - this has been coming for years. We are all tired of these thrashings abroad. BCCI PLEASE do something so that we can hold our heads up again.
