David Laycock was on the Kent staff for six years between 1969 and 1974 during which time he made 12 first-class appearances. His best performance came on his debut against Leicestershire in 1969 when he made 58, his only fifty. He also made five appearances in the Sunday League without any success.

He played for Sussex's 2nd XI from 1966 to 1974, and although he scored heavily for them in his final summer he was unable to force his way back into a strong first team. After retiring he became a postman but continued to coach.
