Henry Calder was from a Hampshire cricketing family that could be traced back to the glory days of Hambledon. He played a handful of games for Hampshire as an amateur batsman and offspinner, with moderate success, and then after emigrating with his family to South Africa, he went on to captain Western Province in the Currie Cup. He returned to England at the outbreak of war in 1914. He was an accountant by profession.
