Marc Ellison's career highlight was leading New Zealand Under-19 to the World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2006 (a team featuring Martin Guptill, Tim Southee, Colin Munro, Hamish Bennett, Todd Astle and Roneel Hira). However his performances were disappointing where he couldn't match his strong domestic U-19 form, scoring 85 runs in six innings as his team lost the Plate Final to Nepal. During his time at the University of Otago, he played for Carisbrook, Dunedin and the Otago 2nd XI without impressing enough to get a chance in the first-class arena.

Ellison spent a season playing club cricket in South Australia for Glenelg where he helped his side to victory in the XXXX Gold One Day competition with 61 off 48 balls against Sturt in the semi-final and 55 in the final at Adelaide Oval against Kensington. He ventured to the UK in 2009 to play club cricket for Radcliffe on Trent in the South Nottinghamshire Division A. Scoring 571 at a tick over 40 helped Radcliffe win the league and gain promotion to the Notts Premier League for 2010.

After failing to make the most of his underage success it was to be Ireland where he finally made his first-class debut at the age of 31 in May 2018. After strong performances for club team Civil Service North in Belfast, Ellison was selected to open the batting against Leinster and the North West for the Northern Knights. He qualifies for Ireland in August 2020.
