Douglas Steel, a member of the famous Lancashire family of which A. G. was the most illustrious, died on December 2 at Upton, Cheshire. He was a member of the Uppingham School XI for five seasons-- 1871 to 1875--and led the side in the last two years. At this time, Uppingham, thanks to the excellent work of their coach, H. H. Stephenson, were very strong, among Mr. Steel's contemporaries being his brother A. G., A. P. Lucas, W. S. Patterson, S. S. Schultz and H. T. Luddington--all Cambridge Blues. D. Q. Steel was in the Cambridge eleven for four years-- 1876 to 1879--and batted very well in the first two years. His career for Lancashire extended from 1876 to 1886. His only century in first-class cricket was 158 for Cambridge University v. Surrey at the Oval in 1877.
