Ajay Shirke, an industrialist and a businessman, began his association with Maharashtra cricket in 2003, and became president of the Maharashtra Cricket Association in 2005, a post he still held at the time of his appointment as BCCI secretary in May 2016. Shirke had also served as BCCI treasurer in 2012-13, a post he resigned from citing unhappiness with the way the N Srinivasan-led BCCI administration had handled the IPL corruption scandals involving former Chennai Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan and three Rajasthan Royals cricketers.

Under Shirke's watch, the MCA developed a state-of-the-art stadium in Pune, a venue that was granted Test status by the BCCI. Shirke was nominated to be the BCCI secretary by Anurag Thakur, who succeeded Shashank Manohar as board president.

Ironically the pair of Shirke and Thakur, who had been among the few officials openly opposing Srinivasan before he was sidelined as BCCI president by the courts, met the same fate: they were removed as BCCI office bearers by the Supreme Court on January 2, 2017, after a year of defiance towards implementing the Lodha Committee recommendations. The court-appointed committee had been put in place to help establish best practices in the BCCI in the months following the IPL scandal.
