Clayton Palmer made his debut for Middlesex shortly after leaving Uppingham and while he was able to gain a regular place in the county side, he struggled to force his way into the Cambridge XI, perhaps a sign of the relative strengths and the county's need to balance the books by playing available amateurs. He played only twice in 1905 as a Freshman - The Times listed him as one of the best batting prospects - but not at all in 1906, although he made 43 against the university for Middlesex. In 1907 he was a regular, finally winning his Blue. He played little thereafter, turning out twice for Middlesex, the last time against his old university in 1912.
