John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was famous far beyond the world of cricket. For one thing, the sandwich is named after him; for another, although he was a career politician, it was said that his incompetence and corruptness meant that he achieved almost nothing despite holding some of the highest offices in the land; the Sandwich Islands, (now Hawaii), which were discovered by Captain Cook in 1778, were also named in his honour.
His official duties did not interfere with his organising cricket matches in which he usually played as well, or his notorious gambling habit. A member of the infamous Hellfire Club, his wife left him in 1755 after which he had three sons by a mistress who was herself murdered by a deranged clergyman in 1779.
