The Ford Trophy - Final

Auckland v Canterbury

Auckland won by 3 wickets (with 149 balls remaining)

10.10am The final day of the New Zealand domestic cricket season is upon us, ladies and gentlemen, in the form of the Ford Trophy one-day final between Auckland and Canterbury from Auckland's Eden Park Outer Oval. I am Avi Singh and I will be your commentator (and scorer!) for the duration of today's proceedings.

News from the middle is that Auckland captain Gareth Hopkins has won the toss and Auckland will bowl first. Hopkins has not considered the impact of rain or Duckworth/Lewis on the match despite some overnight showers - he expects a full game!

Canterbury's captain Andrew Ellis would have batted first anyway. Peter Fulton and Dean Brownlie are in from the New Zealand side that played the last Test against England to bolster their domestic side's chances of success today.

Simon Doull's pitch report supports the home side's decision to insert the visitors, says there will be some assistance early on before the deck flattens out.

Auckland have had the wood over Canterbury in this format this season, winning all three one-day contests, including the Major Preliminary Final. Colin Munro has scored two blistering hundreds in his last two innings against Canterbury in a season full of runs and low on rain. But Canterbury's bowling attack has been the best in the competition this season, with the top wicket-taker Matt Henry alongside Ryan McCone and Andrew Ellis.

The atmosphere is slightly subdued due to the horrific assault on Jesse Ryder which has stunned the New Zealand and global cricket communities. Superb to hear that he is making good progress recovering from his injuries and fingers crossed he makes a full recovery.

The last two finals have been thrillers, Michael Mason winning Central Districts the title over Auckland by two wickets in his final domestic match last season and Lou Vincent's blistering ton giving Auckland a thrilling 6-run win over Canterbury in 2010-11. Here's hoping for a third cracking final in succession!

Drinks are taken with my fingers needing a rest after a manic passage of play! Worker departed early before Fulton took charge and, along with Nicol, appeared to be setting Canterbury up for a strong total. But Nicol's freakish run-out backing up too far at the non-striker's end kick-started a remarkable Auckland turnaround - Fulton and Brownlie departed in consecutive deliveries to injudicious strokes before Stewart was undone by a brilliant catch from Colin Munro. Grobbelaar to Ellis, no run, lofted aerially down the ground but on the bounce to mid-on and no single is available

26.3

Grobbelaar to Ellis, OUT, poor stroke from the Canterbury captain costs him his wicket, tried to repeat the previous stroke but again couldn't get right underneath it and it settled safely in the hands of Bates at mid-on

AM Ellis c Bates b Grobbelaar 17 (52m 35b 1x4 0x6) SR: 48.57

Grobbelaar to Latham, FOUR, great cover drive, full outside off and pierces the in-field veil for the first boundary in a while

28.3

Grobbelaar to Latham, 1 run, opens the face and dabs down to third man

28.4

Grobbelaar to Hira, OUT, Hira departs without scoring and that was not a well-advised shot, full outside off and Hira pushed at it without moving his feet, nicked it through to Hopkins who made no mistake this time

RM Hira c †Hopkins b Grobbelaar 0 (7m 8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

29.6

de Grandhomme to Henry, no run, defends into the off side

This final has certainly been an anti-climax so far, given the close contests this season and the deluge of runs as well...

End of over 30 (1 run) Canterbury 114/7
MJ Henry    2* (6b)      C de Grandhomme    7-0-23-0
TWM Latham    32* (51b 2x4)      DJ Grobbelaar    5-0-17-2

30.1

Grobbelaar to Latham, no run, chopped the back foot drive into his own foot

30.2

Grobbelaar to Latham, no run, defends off the back foot to leg but picks out midwicket

30.3

Grobbelaar to Latham, 1 wide, strays down leg this time, rare error from the miserly and accurate Grobbelaar

30.3

Grobbelaar to Latham, OUT, oh dear, Latham has sold his partner down the river here, a run out when you are 115 for 7 in a final batting first is not advisable! He came forward and drove firmly into the covers, set off immediately but Kitchen swooped with two hands and Henry was well out as Hopkins removed the bails. Latham seemed to have thought he beat the fielder there - he was sadly mistaken

MJ Henry run out 2 (8m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

30.4

Grobbelaar to McCone, no run

31.1

Munro to Latham, 1 run, on comes Colin Munro (where is Bruce Martin?), Latham drives to long-off

31.2

Munro to McCone, 1 run, slaps a cut into the covers and hares down the pitch to make his ground

31.3

Munro to Latham, no run, defends to cover

31.4

Munro to Latham, 1 run, flicked on the bounce off the pads to fine leg on the edge of the circle

31.5

Munro to McCone, 1 run, McCone gets another edge through the slips down to third man, no second slip in place, would have gone down his throat

31.6

Munro to Latham, 2 runs, rushes back for a second after clipping off the pads as drinks are taken

Auckland well on top here, would require a miraculous comeback from Canterbury to even make a contest of this

End of over 32 (6 runs) Canterbury 125/8
TWM Latham    36* (58b 2x4)      C Munro    1-0-6-0

32.5

Grobbelaar to McCone, no run, opens the face and dabs to point

32.6

Grobbelaar to McCone, no run, maiden for Grobbelaar as this is on the pads and he misses the flick

I assume Alex is talking tongue-in-cheek here: "Hopkins' drop has so far cost 11 runs. I hope that doesn't come back to hurt Auckland here, Canterbury starting to get away."

End of over 33 (maiden) Canterbury 125/8
RJ McCone    6* (11b 1x4)      DJ Grobbelaar    7-1-22-2
TWM Latham    36* (58b 2x4)      C Munro    1-0-6-0

33.1

Bates to Latham, no run, one over for Munro and he is yanked for Bates, starts with a short ball and gloves the pull straight to the fielder at fine leg on the bounce

33.2

Bates to Latham, SIX, top edges a hook and it sails over the keeper's head and into the rocks at the Walters Rd end

33.3

Bates to Latham, OUT, Auckland have been smoking hot in the field, Hopkins' drop aside, and here Latham's innings is ended as Canterbury's last hope departs, it was full outside off and Latham attempted to go over the top, skied the drive high and looked to have cleared mid-off, de Grandhomme ran backwards and importantly side-on to keep an eye on the ball, dived one-handed behind him and plucked it before retaining control as he fell, an absolute screamer of a catch

TWM Latham c de Grandhomme b Bates 42 (90m 61b 2x4 1x6) SR: 68.85

33.4

Bates to McCone, no run, McCone slammed this into the covers with power, but picks out cover

33.6

Bates to McCone, FOUR, strays on the pads and McCone is going down fighting here, well clipped through the vacant midwicket region out to the boundary

End of over 34 (14 runs) Canterbury 139/9

HK Bennett    0* (0b)      DJ Grobbelaar    7-1-22-2

34.1

Mills to Bennett, no run, Mills is back to finish things off, Bennett leaves a full ball outside off through to Hopkins

34.2

Mills to Bennett, no run, banged in short on middle and Bennett, who looks a batsman of extremely limited ability, gets under it in ungainly fashion

34.3

Mills to Bennett, no run, goes back and defends, stops on him a bit and balloons into the covers

34.4

Mills to Bennett, no run, mistimes the attempted smear through the covers

34.5

Mills to Bennett, OUT, Auckland have steamrollered Canterbury for 139 in the Ford Trophy final, Bennett the last to go, flashes a cut at a wide ball outside off and Hopkins dives in front of McIntosh to take the rising delivery

HK Bennett c †Hopkins b Mills 0 (7m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

The sunshine may be out in full force, but this final has proved a damp squib so far as Canterbury, barring an early partnership between Peter Fulton and Rob Nicol, collapsed under the weight of some outstanding Auckland bowling and fielding. Chris Martin and Donovan Grobbelaar grabbed two wickets each while Michael Bates picked up three. There were also some unbelievable catches and a sharp run-out as Canterbury cracked under pressure, which will leave their coach Gary Stead very disappointed. Auckland require a measly 140 to reclaim their title on home soil when we return after the lunch break. See you all soon!

Apologies, we have received the wrong information. 1.45pm is the wrong time - the players are coming back out at 1.20pm and we will have lunch at 2.00pm now! The vicissitudes of covering cricket and dealing with decisions by match managers and television officials...

Aaron: "Staggered that Auckland didn't use Bruce Martin. Maybe they wanted to go for the jugular with the pacemen instead..." Suppose he simply wasn't required, the damage was done inside the first 15 overs when Canterbury lost four international batsmen in the space of 11 balls...
