Danny Briggs, the left-arm spinner, has been ruled out of the Twenty20 series against New Zealand and England Lions' tour of Australia after spraining his right ankle during fitness training ahead of the final ODI against India.
Joe Root will replace Briggs in the T20 squad for the New Zealand matches and means he is now involved in all three formats during the tour.
Briggs, who has played one ODI and three T20s, has not figured during the one-day series against India and may not have earned a place in the T20 matches against New Zealand due to the impressive form of James Tredwell, who is the other frontline spinner in the squad.
He would have been one of three spinners in the Lions squad for the one-day series against Australia A, alongside Durham's Scott Borthwick and Simon Kerrigan of Lancashire.

Have to say I feel Briggs hasn't been given a fair crack of the whip. In India , where our spinners/spin options have done better than our pace bowlers , Dernbach gets 6 games in a row (not to mention the games previous to this tour) and fails every time and Briggs does not get one opportunity. I'm starting to really loathe our selectors.
Posted by bipulkumar on (January 26, 2013, 6:25 GMT)Root is great find for England.
Posted by landl47 on (January 26, 2013, 0:17 GMT)Has Dockrell made himself available for England? I'd have thought he would have made the squad ahead of Briggs if he has.
