England in New Zealand T20I Series - 3rd T20I

New Zealand v England

England won by 10 wickets (with 44 balls remaining)

The players are out in the middle...here we go. Steven Finn with the first over

Phil Blackwood: "Unfortunately not showing the game on any of the 20 sports channels we have here at 50th Street Yangon, Myanmar so settling into a afternoon of reading! Glad to be joining you guys!" Glad to have you with us, Phil

6.55pm Kalpesh: "Never been a fan of short boundaries and if the boundaries are shorter than normal it's just bad for the game. Takes the bowlers completely out of the game and all it becomes is a muscle game, team which muscles more wins the game." Well, I think this series has shown (by England in Auckland and NZ in Hamilton) that smart, clever bowling still succeeds even with shorter boundaries.

Andrew: "Excuse me, but what on earth is the point of playing Joe Root if he's batting at 7?" Does he lose much in comparison with Samit? Interesting debate.

6.50pm Good crowd building up. Expecting about 20,000 which should create a great atmosphere in the Cake Tin.

Michael: "Lovely weather in Wellington tonight - despite being the windiest city in the world the breeze is gentle and cooling tonight. Heading down to the Stadium now."

6.35pm Time for the toss...England have won and will bowl, Stuart Broad citing the statistics which say chasing is the way to go on this ground despite admitting a mistake in the previous match. Joe Root has been brought in for Samit Patel.

Brendon McCullum says he, too, would have bowled first. "Hopefully we can continue in the trend we did the other night." He confirms an unchanged for New Zealand and says the boundaries are shorter than normal at the ground.

New Zealand 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Hamish Rutherford, 3 Brendon McCullum (capt & wk), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Colin Munro, 6 Grant Elliott, 7 James Franklin, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Ian Butler, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Mitchell McClenaghan

England 1 Michael Lumb, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Luke Wright, 4 Jonny Bairstow, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Joe Root, 8 Stuart Broad (capt), 9 James Tredwell, 10 Steven Finn, 11 Jade Dernbach

6.30pm Alistair: "Just back from holiday in Morroco freezing cold in my bed here in Scotland waiting for cricket to start come on England warm me up!"

6.20pm Hello and welcome to coverage of the deciding Twenty20 between New Zealand and England from Wellington. I'm Andrew McGlashan and will be bringing you all the action. It looks a lovely evening in Wellington. We are just a few moments away from the toss and I'll bring you the news as soon as I have it. Can New Zealand continue the comeback theme?

0.1

Finn to Rutherford, no run, good start, short of a length, beats Rutherford's attempt to upper cut it down to third man

0.2

Finn to Rutherford, 1 run, back of a length on leg stump, at the body, worked off the hip backward of square on the leg side

Slip and a gully in place

0.3

Finn to Guptill, no run, legs pumping, he likes the look of the bounce on offer, this is outside off and defended square

0.4

Finn to Guptill, 1 run, angled into the pads this time, comfortably worked backward of square on the leg side

0.5

Finn to Rutherford, 1 run, goes full for the first time, Rutherford is a little on the back foot and squirts it towards backward point...a well-judged single by Guptill from the non-striker's end

0.6

Finn to Guptill, no run, on off stump, tight delivery, pushed to backward point

A solid opening over from Finn

Stuart Broad takes the ball. A slip in place.

1.1

Broad to Rutherford, no run, on the stumps, quite full, pushed into the covers

1.2

Broad to Rutherford, FOUR, first chance for him to free his arms and he does so in style, was only fractionally outside off and nowhere near a half volley...he drove on the up between backward point and cover

1.3

Broad to Rutherford, no run, another drive into the off side, this was a fuller delivery, and he picks out cover

1.4

Broad to Rutherford, 1 run, driven straight on this occasional, but doesn't quite time this one and mid-off has the chance to cut it off with a slide and dive

1.5

Broad to Guptill, no run, good line, on middle and off, defended into the covers

1.6

Broad to Guptill, 1 run, neatly dropped into the off side, used soft hands so the ball didn't run very far off the bat and cover couldn't get in quick enough

End of over 2 (6 runs) New Zealand 9/0

HD Rutherford    7* (7b 1x4)      ST Finn    1-0-3-0

2.1

Finn to Guptill, no run, expansive drive outside off, 142kph from Finn, and he is beaten by good bounce from short of a length

2.2

Finn to Guptill, no run, very nicely bowled, beats the edge again, this time with a fuller delivery which moves away late off the seam

2.3

Finn to Guptill, 2 runs, back of a length outside off, Guptill stands tall and drives off the back foot fine of point and wide of third man

2.4

Finn to Guptill, 1 run, plenty happened on this ball! Guptill gets an inside edge into his boot as he drives, Finn falls over in his follow through, then Rutherford would have been run out if Morgan had hit from backward point

2.5

Finn to Rutherford, no run, full outside leg stump, shapes to flick it away and misses out...gets taken on the pads

2.6

Finn to Rutherford, FOUR, excellent shot, short of a length outside off and Rutherford back-cuts it very fine wide of slip and fine of third man

Despite that boundary, two good overs from Finn to start with

End of over 3 (7 runs) New Zealand 16/0
HD Rutherford    11* (9b 2x4)      ST Finn    2-0-10-0
MJ Guptill    5* (9b)      SCJ Broad    1-0-6-0

3.1

Broad to Guptill, no run, tries something more expansive, attempts to heave a full delivery through the leg side but only gets it as far as mid-on

3.2

Broad to Guptill, 1 run, steps across the crease and tucks this from off stump through square leg

3.3

Broad to Rutherford, OUT, first one gone, short ball works. Banged in on leg stump, 143kph which is lively and a good line, Rutherford gets into tangle as he tries to pull and the ball loops off his glove to short fine-leg

3.4

Broad to Guptill, no run, length delivery on middle, defended back to the bowler

3.5

Broad to Guptill, 1 run, pushed onto the pads and flicked out to deep square-leg

Slip back in for McCullum's first ball

3.6

Broad to BB McCullum, no run, low full toss which he doesn't put away, caught a little by surprise, as he drives it to mid-off

End of over 4 (2 runs) New Zealand 18/1

A third over for Finn...

4.1

Finn to Guptill, no run, well bowled, locates a good yorker which can only be dug out towards cover

4.2

Finn to Guptill, 1 run, short of a length, nips in a touch to Guptill, runs towards short fine-leg

4.3

Finn to BB McCullum, no run, back of a length outside off, defended to the covers

England already scurrying between deliveries and overs

4.4

Finn to BB McCullum, no run, big appeal for two things, firstly an lbw as the ball nipped back and looked to high and I think England had a go for the catch by Buttler in case there was an inside edge. There wasn't. Testing delivery, though.

4.5

Finn to BB McCullum, no run, this one is full outside off, McCullum forces himself forward but can't beat backward point

4.6

Finn to BB McCullum, 1 run, the bounces makes it awkward again, McCullum keen to get onto the front foot and he takes his bottom hand off the bat as this flies off the edge down to third

An impressive burst from Finn and no early momentum for New Zealand

End of over 5 (2 runs) New Zealand 20/1

First change of bowling as Jade Dernbach comes on

5.1

Dernbach to BB McCullum, FOUR, and he's welcomed by a scorching cover drive, leaned powerfully into the full delivery and places it between cover and mid-off. Classy.

5.2

Dernbach to BB McCullum, 1 run, drags the length back, McCullum responds by dropping it towards mid-off who is now hanging back towards the edge of the circle

5.3

Dernbach to Guptill, 1 run, flayed through the off side again, this time by Guptill, but it's not quite so cleanly struck which gives Broad the chase to get round from mid-off

5.4

Dernbach to BB McCullum, 2 runs, lovely piece of timing, driving square and beats backward point but it doesn't quite have enough to reach the boundary as third man, Joe Root, makes excellent ground around the boundary

5.5

Dernbach to BB McCullum, 1 run, nips into McCullum, the ball drops down by his feet and Dernbach brings out his footballing skills from his follow through but Guptill is very safe

5.6

Dernbach to Guptill, 1 run, slower ball, Dernbach's first, Guptill waits for it and turns into the leg side

End of the Powerplay and England will be pleased with keeping New Zealand to 30 for 1

End of over 6 (10 runs) New Zealand 30/1

Luke Wright now replaces Steven Finn. He's been the bowling bonus of the series for England

6.1

Wright to Guptill, 1 run, starts with a short ball which his pulled through midwicket but not quite out of the middle

6.2

Wright to BB McCullum, FOUR, short again and this one is dispatched, a skimmer from McCullum as he pulls with those incredible fast hands to beat deep square even though he only had a few metres to move

6.3

Wright to BB McCullum, 1 run, gets this fuller and it's worked into the midwicket area, Wright chases after it himself

6.4

Wright to Guptill, 1 run, placed into midwicket again, Guptill sets off thinking of a second but McCullum declines

6.5

Wright to BB McCullum, 1 run, another short ball, dangerous tactic to McCullum, and he gets away with it this time as the pull shot is nailed straight to deep square

6.6

Wright to Guptill, 1 run, a slightly more ugly heave to a full delivery, Guptill drags it wide of mid-on and deep midwicket cuts it off

End of over 7 (9 runs) New Zealand 39/1
MJ Guptill    13* (20b)      LJ Wright    1-0-9-0

James Tredwell with the first spin of the innings

7.1

Tredwell to Guptill, 2 runs, short outside off and cut through backward point

7.2

Tredwell to Guptill, 1 run, offers up another one to cut square off the back foot to the cover sweeper

7.3

Tredwell to BB McCullum, 1 run, touch to short and wide to start, this time he gets cut in front of square so the sweeper runs the other direction

7.4

Tredwell to Guptill, FOUR, beautifully driven through the off side, opened his stance a fraction and placed it through the covers

7.5

Tredwell to Guptill, 2 runs, comes round the wicket, Guptill comes down the pitch and chips this back over the bowler's head and it travels a fair distance

7.6

Tredwell to Guptill, 1 run, worked down to long-on, another good for New Zealand who are how starting to build as they reach 50

End of over 8 (11 runs) New Zealand 50/1
MJ Guptill    23* (25b 1x4)      JC Tredwell    1-0-11-0
BB McCullum    16* (13b 2x4)      LJ Wright    1-0-9-0

8.1

Wright to Guptill, 1 run, still bowling a little too short, Guptill doesn't get this out of the middle as he pulls through midwicket

8.2

Wright to BB McCullum, no run, very sweetly driven as Wright goes fuller, goes straight to mid-off and it was so well-struck it was a dot ball

Third man comes up, long-off goes back

8.3

Wright to BB McCullum, FOUR, poor delivery, short outside stump, McCullum swivels and pulls backward of square

8.4

Wright to BB McCullum, 2 runs, that's better, gets a full ball in on middle and leg but some excellent running makes it two after the ball is squeezed into the big gap on the leg side at midwicket

8.5

Wright to BB McCullum, 2 runs, a crunching straight drive, which nearly takes off one of Wright's fingers as he sticks out a hand in his follow through. Takes a little pace off the ball and they get back for another two

8.6

Wright to BB McCullum, 1 run, friendly full toss outside off, only costs him a single, though, as it's driven to long-off

End of over 9 (10 runs) New Zealand 60/1

9.1

Tredwell to BB McCullum, 1 run, stays round the wicket, worked off the back foot through midwicket

9.2

Tredwell to Guptill, 1 run, comes down the pitch and drives neatly to long-off

9.3

Tredwell to BB McCullum, OUT, well caught! Key wicket. McCullum tries to go over midwicket with the slog sweep but it comes off a bit of a top edge, miles into the air, and Bairstow steadies himself expertly at deep midwicket. Would have been six in the previous two matches

Ross Taylor at No. 4. Has been a little scratchy so far since his comeback

9.4

Tredwell to Guptill, no run, but it's Guptill on strike and he pushes this to midwicket

9.5

Tredwell to Guptill, no run, can't beat the off side field this time as Tredwell bowls quicker and flatter

9.6

Tredwell to Guptill, 1 run, gets this one wide of the bowler down to long-on

Joe Root, who replaced Samit Patel, comes into the attack with his off spin

10.1

Root to Guptill, 1 run, also around the wicket, tucked off the back foot to deep square

10.2

Root to Taylor, no run, quite flat from Root, on off stump, driven down the off side and he gets across

10.3

Root to Taylor, no run, can't beat short third man as he opens the face

10.4

Root to Taylor, SIX, that's more like the Ross Taylor the world stage knows, goes for the slog sweep and comfortably clears deep midwicket

10.5

Root to Taylor, OUT, gone! Tries to repeat the short and picks out deep midwicket where Bairstow is lurking again. Superb bowling from Root, he held this one back, it was about 15ks slower, and he did Taylor in the flight. Impressive nerve

11.3

Mark Newman isn't happy: "That innings from Taylor epitomises why 20/20 is not cricket"

11.4

Tredwell to Elliott, 1 run, shorter, whipped off the back foot to deep midwicket

11.5

Tredwell to Guptill, 1 run, outside leg stump, a well-timed flicked but it goes straight to deep midwicket

11.6

Tredwell to Elliott, SIX, midwicket is a popular area, for scoring and wickets, this one clears the boundary into the stands from another slog sweep

12.1

Root to Guptill, 1 run, flat on leg stump, goes for the sweep and comes off a bottom edge to short fine-leg

12.2

Root to Elliott, 1 run, neat play, steps outside leg stump to open up the off side and gets it over backward point

12.4

Root to Guptill, 1 run, worked wide of midwicket

12.5

Root to Elliott, 1 run, dragged a fraction short, but only costs him a single as Elliott paddles it around to deep square

Tredwell to finish his spell

13.1

Tredwell to Guptill, 1 run, short on leg stump but the batsmen are finding fielders at the moment as this is pulled to deep square

13.2

Tredwell to Elliott, 1 run, steps outside leg stump and drives down to long-off without much timing

13.3

Tredwell to Guptill, 1 run, gets forward and drives, very correctly, down the ground

New Zealand biding their time for the last five overs

13.4

Tredwell to Elliott, no run, can't beat the off side as he drives a full delivery to cover

13.5

Tredwell to Elliott, 2 runs, that's nicely played as he lofts this inside out over cover and wide of long-off but Root is quick on the boundary

13.6

Tredwell to Elliott, 1 run, a short ball and he inside edges the pull into his pads then it bobbles into the off side

Good final over from Tredwell who bounced back from an expensive first one

Two overs for Root and back to pace from Dernbach. Big call from Broad

14.1

Dernbach to Elliott, no run, beats a rather half-hearted cut from Elliott, was a fairly gentle loosener outside off stump

14.2

Dernbach to Elliott, OUT, good catch at third man, England have caught well this series. Short outside off stump, Dernbach tries to ramp it fine of third man but Finn makes good ground to his left. He didn't really go through with the shot.

16.6

18.2

Broad to Franklin, 1 run, dropped, a rare mistake in the catching from England. Franklin gave himself a touch of room and drilled it hard to mid-off, but Finn could not quite get down to a very low chance. Tough.

Steven Finn has left the field after that

18.3

Broad to Guptill, 1 run, short ball, beats him for pace at 143kph, can only splice his pull into the leg side

18.4

Broad to Franklin, 1 bye, another bye is taken after Franklin was beaten by a short ball...Buttler not winning any games of ten-pin bowling right now. Franklin wanted a wide, too

18.5

Broad to Guptill, OUT, short again, a wicket again. Guptill gets into a tangle as he tries to work this to leg and gets a top edge that Broad takes easily. Not a free-flowing innings, he never hit top gear. The value, or otherwise, will become clear a little later

That was a sharp display from England with the ball and in the field, led by the captain Stuart Broad and a fine spell from Steven Finn. Martin Guptill tried to hold New Zealand together but never had any great scoring rate to his innings. This is not as free-scoring a ground as the previous two, but New Zealand look short by 15-20 runs. We'll find out in a few moments.

JohnnyReb: "I can count on one hand the number of times NZ has hit with the middle of the bat. Broad and co. doing looking like Steyn and Morne."

End of over 20 (10 runs) New Zealand 139/8
     JW Dernbach    4-0-36-3
IG Butler    1* (1b)      SCJ Broad    4-0-15-3
