114.3

Tanvir Ahmed to Young, OUT, a vital breakthrough just before lunch! Lunch has arrived, 73 runs in the session but perhaps more importantly only 1 wicket lost. Young and Vettori frustrated Pakistan and have lifted their side to a much more respectable score while Pakistan were fairly flat for the majority of the session. Their over-rate has simply been abysmal with only 26 overs bowled despite a spinner being on for long periods, and it was equally poor yesterday as well. The match referee will probably be involved, but at the moment he is probably off for lunch, as am I, and we will be back at 1.40pm local time for the second session.

Welcome back. We got this excellently researched feedback from Colin Sharples during the interval: "I say this is a good total from NZ. Only twice in the 52 tests at the Basin has a side scored more than this and gone on to lose. Any side scoring more than 366 in the first innings has either won or drawn the match, and three times teams have scored less than 300 but still gone on to win the match. The lowest is 228 all out in this match, Hadlee took 6-26 to wrap it up. So don't write off NZ yet!"

Umar Gul to bowl the first ball of the afternoon session to Vettori, who is 21 away from a sixth Test hundred

116.1

Umar Gul to Vettori, 1 run, a good length on off and Vettori moves across again to clip it through the fine leg region

around the wicket to Southee

116.2

Umar Gul to Southee, 1 run, and he bowls a friendly half-volley on leg stump which Southee is no doubt relieved to flick away into the deep areas at backward square

Amir Mir: "I think this is a very good total for New Zealand, so far. Stats may suggest that New Zealand are in a good position, but we'll know if this is a good total or not, by the way Pakistan respond. New Zealand have had their major collapse in this series already, and we all know this Pakistan batting line-up can at any time crumble. I hope Pakistan do post a good total, but I have a funny feeling their major collapse will come in this game... Please prove me wrong."

DL Vettori c Misbah-ul-Haq b Abdur Rehman 110 (248m 166b 10x4 1x6) SR: 66.26

An important partnership from Young and Vettori as New Zealand have recovered from 180-6 to almost double their score, also courtesy of some tail-end resistance from Martin to get his captain to a Test hundred. Pakistan have let the initiative slip and would be disappointed with how they have let things get away, but the pitch is certainly excellent to bat on and they should come out looking to post at least 400. Thanks for all the Chris Martin mails, we read them all but unfortunately can't post them all. Many mails pilloring Daryl Harper, who has got a few wrong but they were not shockers by any stretch. We will be back after a quick innings break.
