Azhar and Taufeeq have looked fairly settled after the early loss of Hafeez to a controversial decision which sparked hundreds of mails regarding the UDRS system. They were almost unanimously in favour of the system, make of that what you will. Harper and Tucker will certainly be under the spotlight for the rest of the Test, but now they are out of it for a 20-minute break as are we. Join us in 20 minutes for the final session.

Back for the final session of the day. Great day for a refreshing ice cream.

Emaad is confident despite the early wicket: "I think Pakistan can really get 400 despite the loss of Hafeez if they apply themselves. They have a relatively strong middle order (hopefully Younis finds form!), the pitch is dead, no swing or overcast conditions, bowlers not too great, and a tail that can definitely wag. Fingers crossed!"

Vettori to Taufeeq Umar, OUT, oh dear! Taufeeq heads to the shed just before stumps, it was outside off and full and he just stabbed at it with an open face to Guptill who was alert to snap it up at second slip

And in fact, that is stumps. A real shame for Pakistan who had dominated the last session but have given the home side hope with that late wicket. Taufeeq and Azhar had done a good job blunting the New Zealanders who as ever worked hard but never looked like running through the lineup. Both made patient fifties, but unfortunately only Azhar will be able to carry on tomorrow.

Do head over to our coverage of the 1st ODI between Australia and England at Melbourne, where England are racing along although Australia are getting wicket every now and then.

From here though, that's it for today. Thanks for all the feedback, hope you enjoyed the coverage and do join us again tomorrow at 10.30am local time for day 3 which will be pivotal in deciding the course of the game. Nitin's bulletin and Andrew's plays will be up soon. For now though, along with Sanjay Murari, this is Avi Singh saying goodbye.

Welcome to day 3 of ESPNcricinfo's live coverage of the 2nd Test between New Zealand and Pakistan at the Basin Reserve. As usual Andrew Fernando is at the ground and Nitin Sundar on bulletin, while Sanjay Murari is our scorer and I, Avi Singh, am with you for commentary.

For a wrap-up of what happened on day 2, Nitin's bulletin, Andrew's plays and press conference quotes.

Meanwhile, over in Melbourne Australia beat England by 6 wickets in the first ODI, courtesy of Shane Watson's brilliant unbeaten 161 which is also the highest ODI score by an Australian against England, breaking Dean Jones' 21-year old record.

An interesting day looms, Pakistan in front but they still have some work to do to further consolidate any advantage. They trail by 222 with eight wickets in hand, which would no doubt please Richie Benaud. His new book 'Over but Not Out' is as insightful as always, definitely worth a read if you're on the hunt for a good cricket book.

10.58am One ball left in the over, Vettori to complete it and begin the day as well by bowling to the new batsman Younis Khan. Players walk out
