Pakistan in New Zealand ODI Series - 1st ODI

New Zealand v Pakistan

New Zealand won by 9 wickets (with 196 balls remaining)

1.1

Southee to Kamran Akmal, 1 wide, ooh, he begins with a looses cannon. Full and wide outside off, it swings away like it has a mind of its own and Kamran has a swish at it. He misses, McCullum fumbles.

1.1

Southee to Kamran Akmal, no run, over-pitched outside off and again moving away nicely, Kamran drives without getting fully across, to Ryder at cover point

1.2

Southee to Kamran Akmal, no run, holds the length back a touch, and Kamran chooses not to drive. Defended from the crease

1.3

Southee to Kamran Akmal, no run, pleasing shape from Southee again, at lively pace too - 136 kph. Another one lands on a length around middle stump and straightens. Kamran punches it down the track, but not too well-timed.

1.4

Southee to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, this time he slants it down the leg, lost in search of the dream ball. Kamran flicks it to fine leg for one

1.5

Southee to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, on Hafeez's pads this time, and for the second time he's missed out on an easy scoring opportunity

1.6

Southee to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, strong finish to the over. The perfect away-going delivery, slants in from a touch wide of the crease, lands on a length and straightens, squaring up the batsman and taking the outside edge. It went straight down and ran towards point

Pakistan 7/0   TG Southee 1-0-2-0

3.1

Southee to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Southee holds the length back outside off, Hafeez opens the face and drops it to the off side

3.2

Southee to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, goes fuller, invites the drive, but doesn't get the deviation this time. Hafeez middles the shot this time, but straight to mid off

3.3

Southee to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, loud appeal for lbw as Southee scrambles the seam and somehow gets it to jag back into Hafeez, who moves his front foot a mile across and then is in trouble as he looks to get the bat around to the ball. He managed to get an inside edge onto the pads though, that saved him.

3.4

Southee to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, Southee has outdone Hafeez with a lovely bit of bowling here. Out-thought and outdone. After getting the previous ball to nip in, he gets this one to dart away from just outside off. Perfect length too, Hafeez stayed on the back foot and tentatively dangled the bat at it, mostly in hope. It took the edge and nestled in McCullum's gloves.

Mohammad Hafeez c †BB McCullum b Southee 0 (15m 9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

3.5

Southee to Younis Khan, 2 runs, full on off stump and Younis is away with a nicely timed steer past point. Back for a couple.

3.6

Southee to Younis Khan, no run, Southee keeps probing away, another subtle change in length. Fullish ball, looking for the dream outswinger from middle and leg. Younis had to arrest his forward lunge quickly to defend to the off side

Pakistan 9/1   TG Southee 2-0-4-1

5.1

Southee to Younis Khan, FOUR, Southee continues to do a decent fast bowler's impression of legspin. Another sharp away seamer, sucks Younis into the waft after getting forward, and gets the edge. Unfortunately for Southee, it was a thick edge that eluded the two slips

5.2

Southee to Younis Khan, 1 run, another one that moves away from off stump, Younis opens the face and guides square for one

5.3

Southee to Kamran Akmal, no run, back of a length outside off, Kamran hangs back in the crease and check drives into the covers

5.4

Southee to Kamran Akmal, no run, every now and then, Southee gets one to jag back in off the seam. Good combination - outswing and in-seam. Kamran is cut in half as he stays back in the crease

5.5

Southee to Kamran Akmal, no run, this is top-class new-ball bowling, from a different era almost. That's how rare good sideways movement has become these days. Southee tries what he did successfully against Hafeez, follows up the inducker with the away swinger again. Hafeez was good enough to edge it, Kamran was not.

5.6

Southee to Kamran Akmal, no run, stays back in the crease, carefully watching the movement off the track, before defending to the off side

Pakistan 16/1   TG Southee 3-0-9-1

7.1

Southee to Kamran Akmal, OUT, Kamran combusts. Southee has kept testing them from a length outside off, getting them to move away from the right handers. Kamran has another flash at it, but the movement took it away from the middle. He was going uppish with this, so Ryder was always in business at point. He moved quickly to the left to complete a tumbling take, as graceful as his frame would allow him to be.

Kamran Akmal c Ryder b Southee 8 (31m 23b 1x4 0x6) SR: 34.78

7.2

Southee to Asad Shafiq, no run, and the away swinger continues to work perfectly. Lands on a length outside off and moves away from new man Asad Shafiq who lets it go

7.3

Southee to Asad Shafiq, no run, another one, this is superb use of the seam. Asad sees it carefully and does well to resist from flashing at it

7.4

Southee to Asad Shafiq, no run, this time Southee foxes him into the shot, but does so much with the ball that Asad misses the drive. Lands on driving length as it comes in with the angle and then swerves away like a yoyo. He was driving in another zip code altogether.

7.5

Southee to Asad Shafiq, FOUR, unlucky for the bowler. Once again, Southee slips in the inducker after making the batsman look out of his depth with an away swinger. Asad did not see it coming, was taken by surprise by the slight shortening of length and then by the inward movement. He tried to cover the line in a hurry, but only got an inside edge that whistled past leg stump for four

7.6

Southee to Asad Shafiq, no run, that's not a bad idea. Leave outside off as another one moves away

Pakistan 26/2   TG Southee 4-0-13-2

9.1

Southee to Younis Khan, 1 run, good footwork from Younis, gets well forward and across to a full away seamer outside off and guides it off the face, square for a single

9.2

Southee to Asad Shafiq, no run, another one that goes away, Shafiq is more confident leaving those that begin well outside off

9.3

Southee to Asad Shafiq, no run, poor shot selection from Shafiq, stays back and looks to play an ambitious square cut to a ball that wasn't short enough or wide enough for the shot. It swerves away and misses the edge

9.4

Southee to Asad Shafiq, OUT, see you later Asad Shafiq. Having snared two with the away swing, he's now got one with the inducker. Shafiq was not reading the movement at all, and has been made to look out of his depth in his short stay. He came forward and across in hope this time and played all around it. Rapped in front of middle, and despite the angle, umpire Saheba reckons that was crashing into the furniture. Replays are in, that actually hit him well high on the pads. Might have been a rough call.

Asad Shafiq lbw b Southee 4 (11m 12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

9.5

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, Misbah stays in the crease and watches and one angles in from wide of the crease and straightens outside off

9.6

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, Similar ball, probably closer to the stumps this time, and another leave from Misbah

Pakistan 29/3   TG Southee 5-0-14-3

11.1

Southee to Younis Khan, no run, Southee holds the length back and gets another one to straighten from outside off. Defended off the back foot square on the off side

11.2

Southee to Younis Khan, 1 wide, a rare delivery overcooked by Southee, wide down the leg side

11.2

Southee to Younis Khan, no run, back on track, full on middle and swerving away prodigiously, Younis does really well to defend that off the middle of the bat

11.3

Southee to Younis Khan, no run, play and a miss outside off, Younis had a feel at it as it moved away, but he did not get an edge.

11.4

Southee to Younis Khan, 1 run, nicely played and well fielded. Southee ekes the drive out of Younis with a good length ball, it is timed pretty well down the ground, and Vettori moves quickly to his right from mid off to tumble and stop.

11.5

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, very good adjustment from Misbah to another Southee special away seamer. Moves away from off stump, Misbah opens the face and opens up his stance as he meets the ball, to defend towards point

11.6

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, full on off stump, Misbah covers the line more easily this time and defends to mid off

Pakistan 32/3   TG Southee 6-0-16-3

25.1

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, not immediately. This one slants into the pads and is worked fine for one

25.2

Southee to Shahid Afridi, 1 wide, bangs it short and sends it wide down the leg side

25.2

Southee to Shahid Afridi, 2 runs, Afridi continues to find gaps with big mid-hits over the infield. This short ball stops on him and he doesn't time the pull at all. Gets it to land safely behind midwicket for a couple

25.3

Southee to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, fuller on off stump, Afridi quietly taps into the covers for a single

25.4

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, offcutter on off stump at 134 kph, Misbah defends from the crease towards point

25.5

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, short ball into Misbah's body at 131 kph and he pulls it towards deep fine leg for one

25.6

Southee to Shahid Afridi, no run, length ball at 137 kph on off stump and it is defended to the off side

Pakistan 82/5   TG Southee 7-0-22-3

27.1

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, 136 kph back of a length, not much movement from Southee any more. Misbah looks to guide off the back foot and misses. Again a ghost noise out of the stump mic. Uncanny!

27.2

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, fuller on off, Misbah connects with the steer this time. Single behind point

27.3

Southee to Shahid Afridi, no run, steady length outside off at 137 kph, Afridi looks to pinch a single to the off side, but finds point

27.4

Southee to Shahid Afridi, OUT, Southee takes Afridi out. Not with movement now, but with a little extra bounce and steady unrelenting lengths. This got slightly big on Afridi who looked to steer through the off side. Slightly reminiscent of Umar Akmal's dismissal, except that this went a little finer. Brendon McCullum leaps across and gobbles it mid-air. 200 ODI catches for him.

Shahid Afridi c †BB McCullum b Southee 15 (31m 29b 0x4 0x6) SR: 51.72

27.5

Southee to Abdul Razzaq, no run, lets one go through just outside off.

27.6

Southee to Abdul Razzaq, 1 run, slants this one into the pads and Razzaq works it square for one.

Pakistan 89/6   TG Southee 8-0-24-4

35.1

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, back of a length outside off, Misbah defends off the back foot to the off side ... Meanwhile the TV commentators have started talking about some football. It's the batting Powerplay people!

35.2

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, Misbah spanks another nice boundary. Too little too late? Over-pitched by Southee on off stump, Misbah again sets his base nicely, down on a knee and carves this over the covers.

35.3

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, good comeback, follows Misbah who is backing away rampantly and ensures he can't do much with it

35.4

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, Misbah smokes another one. Down the ground this time. He backs away, he walks back across, Southee is thoroughly confused but delivers a seemingly safe full ball outside off. Not safe - Misbah smashes it off the middle despite not being on the front foot and it is four between bowler and mid off. That's what Ravi Shastri calls a tracer bullet.

35.5

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, looks to chop this one from outside off, and decides against a single. He needs one now.

35.6

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 wide, Aha, Southee tries to bowl a bouncer dot-ball, but ends up dropping too short. Called a wide for height.

35.6

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, and he can't get the single. Misbah will be disappointed. He got a short ball that could have been pulled anywhere, but he found midwicket inside the circle

Pakistan 122/9   TG Southee 9-0-33-4

37.1

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, length ball, giving Misbah no room and he looks to make his own by getting inside the line. Can't get it away to the leg side though.

37.2

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, short ball, hurries him into the pull shot and Misbah can't time it at all this time

37.3

Southee to Misbah-ul-Haq, OUT, five for Southee! Misbah looks bemused. Even mildly amused. He breaks into a wry smile. This is why: It was an offcutter at 133 kph. Misbah spotted the variation and moved across the stumps to look for the tickle to the leg side. It missed the bat, and hit the bottom on his thigh pad, en route to the stumps. It may have hit the stumps in any case. Misbah is distraught. He was looking to whimper this score closer to 150. Pakistan have almost nothing to defend here.

Misbah-ul-Haq b Southee 50 (128m 88b 3x4 1x6) SR: 56.81
